A retired Chicago woman gunned down her grandson’s mother in an upscale New York City neighborhood just steps from the mayor’s home as part of a deadly custody dispute over a 4-year-old girl, city police said Friday. Then she killed herself as a 1-year-old sat in a carseat steps away.

The NYPD said Friday morning that Marisa Galloway, 46, had been shot in the head and the back on a Manhattan street by Kathleen Leigh, the 66-year-old grandmother of Galloway’s 4-year-old child.

“What we have on video, Ms. Galloway puts the child in the backseat of the car. She is then in the process of putting the stroller in the trunk, where she is approached by Ms. Leigh, who shoots her in the head, and when she’s on the ground, shoots her in the back,” NYPD Chief Joseph Kenny told reporters.

The victim of a shocking murder-suicide in New York City’s Upper East Side has been identified as a schoolteacher and former track and field coach at nearby Fordham University, where she had graduated in 2001.

Police found two pistols at the scene — which played out less than a block from Gracie Mansion, where Mayor Eric Adams lives. Leigh dropped one of them after pulling the trigger on herself, and police recovered the other from a tote bag.

They also found Galloway’s other child, a 1-year-old, alive in the back of a car nearby. She is not related to Leigh.

Galloway had just placed the child in a child seat when surveillance video shows Leigh approach and open fire, according to authorities. Then Leigh shot herself.

Galloway and her killer had a history of domestic disputes believed to have stemmed from custody arrangements regarding the 4-year-old, police said during a morning news briefing.

She had filed five reports and two complaints with the NYPD, none of which resulted in an arrest.

Leigh’s son, Kenny Leigh, is the 4-year-old’s father.

The killer was a retired probation officer from Chicago, who lived on North Park Avenue in the Windy City until relocating to the Big Apple three years ago, police said.

Responding officers found both women with gunshot wounds to the head.

Paramedics rushed Galloway to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Galloway was a former college athlete who returned to her alma mater as a volunteer.

“The Fordham University community is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Marisa Galloway, a Fordham alumna who served as a volunteer assistant track and field coach at Fordham for 17 years until 2019,” a school spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Galloway earned a bachelor of arts degree from Fordham College at Rose Hill in 2001 and a master’s degree in science from the Fordham Graduate School of Education four years later, the school said.

“While at Fordham, she was a high jumper for the Rams and also participated in sprints and relay teams over her career. She capped her senior season in 2001 by placing third in the high jump at the Metropolitan Championships,” the statement continued. “We keep Marissa and her loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.”

Commentary | Nancy Braus – Notes from a Vermont Activist: Combating centuries of racism and sexism

In the next three months, we will witness the difference between a Black man successfully running for president against an old school Republican and the elitist, corporate but law following Republican party that used to exist, and a Black woman trying to best a racist, xenophobic and sexist cult leader in the age of the new, so much more hate filled Republican party. Since 2015, as the cult of Trump has solidified, people who had racist tendencies and thought they had better keep them to their small group of friends, or to themselves due to “political correctness” are out in the world. They are trying to drown immigrant children in swimming pools, slapping an 11-year-old Black child in the face for standing in line with his mostly white class, actually burning a cross to intimidate Black neighbors in South Carolina in 2023. In surveys, nearly 90 percent of MAGA cult members have been convinced that white men are oppressed – more so than any other ethnic group! This has been a head scratcher for me: who runs the world?

Interestingly, while I haven’t done any snooping into past racist insults to Obama, birtherism, created and magnified by Trump, is the most prominent racist insult during Obama’s campaign – when he was clearly born in Hawaii. Trump is now trying to stoke the same stupid insult – that because Harris’ parents were immigrants, even though she was born in Oakland, Calif., she is somehow not eligible to run for president. This gets even dumber when you realize that the VP qualifications are the same as that of the president.

We are already seeing the stupidity of a number of Republican elected officials using the new insult to Black folks: you are a DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) hire. In the case of Harris, this is particularly stupid, because she was elected fair and square – in a number of elections. This new “DEI hire” insult is what a lot of people are equating with the new N word, and it is being used a lot in most inappropriate ways. We also are seeing the many ways stupid men can insult women for living their lives – that troll JD Vance had previously called Harris a “childless cat lady who has no stake in the government because she does not have kids!!” Has anything like that ever been said about a male politician?!

When I learned Biden was answering my prayers and stepping down from what had already become a disaster of a campaign, it felt like the only right answer for Kamala Harris to replace him. I still believe that we will win, but I am shocked – either at myself for underestimating the fundamental racial and sexist hatred of millions of white Americans, or at the actual stupid and pathetic insults this brilliant and accomplished woman of color is enduring on a daily basis.

Donald Trump is super angry about having to face an opponent who makes him look old and highlights his unique brand of dementia. While the cult still worships him, he is going more and more off the planet of sanity with his obsessions with sharks, Hannibal Lecter, low water showers and toilets, and so much other stuff that leaves the sane population scratching our heads. For the population who is not permanently glued to Fox and Newsmax, the contrast between an energetic, youthful appearing, former prosecutor who appears to care about issues such as women’s rights, and a sloppy, rude and crude liar with no policy positions and a constant chip on his shoulder about all the ways he has been wronged should make Harris a shoo-in. But, truly the only way we can honestly lose, I believe, is if the hatred for Black people, and the persistent ideas of women’s inferiority bring Trump back to power.

So how do we combat the hundreds of years that have made so many white Americans believe that they are superior to people of color? How do we combat the centuries of bad religion that convinces conservative members of all desert religions that women are inferiors?

It is simplistic to say that Kamala Harris needs to show the world who she is, what she has accomplished so far, and what she intends to do. It may be simplistic to believe that enough Americans can be convinced to vote for Harris because she is the person we need to stop the Christofascists in the Trump camp, but millions of people seem to be responding with outrage and fear to the 900-page plan to take over the government – Project 2025. This race promises to be transformative in one way or another: we will either end with a fascist government, millions of people will leave voluntarily and by force, tons of jobs would go unfilled (do we really believe native born Americans will pick the crops?) No matter what the liar Trump says, there would be a national abortion ban, including drug induced terminations, and likely birth control restrictions that will eliminate many methods that have helped families plan their futures. Or we live in a country that is deeply flawed in wealth inequality, spends far too much of our tax dollars on war, especially the war on Gaza, and has almost non-existent public transit, among the many problems. But, if Harris is elected, we who believe in a better future live to fight another day.

Boston police leaving courthouse arrest suspect who allegedly brandished gun

Local News

The officers were waiting to participate in a court proceeding when they saw Roberto Valladares holding a firearm, police say.

Boston police officers arrested a 23-year-old man seen holding a loaded firearm outside Dorchester District Court on Friday, police say.

Police officers arrested Roberto Valladares at around 10:38 a.m. near the intersection of Washington Street and Tremlett Street for firearm related charges, according to a statement from the Boston Police Department.

Officers had exited the courthouse and were waiting to participate in a court proceeding when they saw Valladares pointing the firearm at people in front of him before securing it in his waistband and continuing down Tremlett Street, the statement said.

Valladares ran across Washington Street toward West Tremlett Street after they commanded that Valladares drop the gun, authorities say.

Officers chased Valladares into a fenced private yard where he “ran towards the back of the yard, and with a throwing motion, launched the handgun over a chain link fence and immediately faced Officers in a fighting posture disobeying all commands,” police said.

Officers reported recovering the firearm — a Glock 19 loaded with one 9mm round in the chamber and 11 rounds loaded in the magazine — and arrested Valladares, who is expected to be arraigned in District Court for the charges of possession of a large capacity firearm, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, unlawful possession of ammunition, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Rain chances will return to the Pittsburgh area today with severe weather possible tomorrow and Wednesday.

Strong wind speed is the biggest concern when it comes to Tuesday and Wednesday storms.  I have a higher storm chance coming in on Tuesday.  NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center offices have Wednesday shaded in with a level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk.  This is the lowest risk level issued daily.  Tuesday is not included on the risk map at all.

Rain chances will be around on Thursday and Friday as well.  I have Saturday’s rain chance the highest of the week.

Highs today will be in the mid-80s.  Yesterday was the tenth day so far this month where we have seen temperatures hitting the 90s. I’ll dip temperatures down to the low 80s on Tuesday and bring them back to the mid-80s for Wednesday. I have highs hitting 90 on Thursday with temperatures in the mid-80s Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with low humidity levels.

Finally, air quality at times will be an issue this week. Today’s an air quality alert day with air being unhealthy for sensitive groups today.  Including green levels that are ‘good’ there are six levels when it comes to air quality.  We are a level 3 today. A level three is listed as moderate and Air.gov says that on these days the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups.

We will see several level 2 and level 3 (again out of six levels) days this week with wildfire smoke being a higher issue for the middle and end of the week.

Did you know Ron Smiley does movie reviews?

I saw Twisters the movie over the weekend. Without giving up any spoilers, my main takeaway is to have a plan in place in case the weather turns dangerous wherever you may. I know that Hollywood is going to Hollywood, but the way that they made storm chasers and scientists the only knowledgeable people in every severe event was a little annoying.  Constantly they were the only ones who knew where tornado shelters were.  You had people who worked at businesses that were clueless about what to do when a tornado was heading right for them.  Seconds count at times.  Make sure you know exactly what to do and that those you love to as well.  Hopefully, this isn’t a tip that you’ll need to thank me for later.  Besides that, Twisters was a fun summer blockbuster with some amazing special effects.  I give the movie four out of five smiles with five being a perfect score.
