Wisconsin is seeing record-high numbers of norovirus cases.
MILWAUKEE – Health experts say a new strain of the norovirus has cases surging across Wisconsin. Norovirus is very contagious and presents symptoms you often associate with the stomach bug.
Common symptoms of norovirus include vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.
Over the last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded ten outbreaks in Wisconsin. Symptoms usually start one or two days after exposure.
How it spreads
According to the CDC, you can get norovirus by:
- Having direct contact with someone with norovirus, like caring for them, sharing food or eating utensils with them, or eating food handled by them.
- Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with norovirus.
- Touching contaminated objects or surfaces and then putting your unwashed fingers in your mouth.
Additionally, you can still spread norovirus for two weeks or more after you feel better, the CDC says.
How can I protect myself?
Frequent handwashing, handling and preparing food safely, and scrubbing surfaces with household disinfectants can help. The CDC says hand sanitizer does not work well against norovirus.
Additionally, health experts advise that you wash laundry in hot water.

When and how outbreaks happen
(WLUK) — Northeast Wisconsin community groups that helped during historic spring flooding can now apply for relief.
Applications for the United Way Fox Cities and Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region Flood Relief fund are now open.
The grants are available to local nonprofits and churches serving residents in Outagamie, Calumet, Shawano, Waupaca, and the Neenah/Menasha area of Winnebago counties who are engaging in relief efforts both short-term and long-term.
Grants are available to:
- 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations
- Groups fiscally sponsored by a qualified 501(c)(3)
- Churches and other public entities able to receive tax-deductible contributions
These grants are not available to private foundations, individuals or businesses directly, labor unions, or 501(c)(4), 501(c)(5), or 501(c)(6) organizations.
The funding provided to these community organizations will help with housing and safe shelter, food, health and well-being, and financial assistance.
For individual homeowners and renters seeking relief, you can apply for FEMA assistance.
President Trump recently approved $22.6 million in federal aid for Northeast Wisconsin. The request made earlier this year asked for $27 million.
