In Wisconsin, Michels’ shift on abortion isn’t 1st reversal
MADISON, Wis. — Republican Tim Michels was speaking to a roomful of social gathering activists in early September when he fielded a query about his place on abortion. Michels vowed he would by no means change, and stated he was “successful” his race in opposition to Democratic Gov. Tim Evers exactly as a result of folks noticed him as “a person of conviction, a person who would not waffle.”
Two weeks later, Michels retreated from his unqualified help for Wisconsin’s 1849 legislation banning abortion besides to save lots of the lifetime of the mom, saying if elected he would signal laws to grant exceptions for rape and incest.
It wasn’t the primary time Michels modified course on a big problem. Since entering into the race in April, Michels endorsed Donald Trump for a 2024 run, after first declining to help anybody; stated the state’s bipartisan election fee needs to be eradicated, after first saying he wished to maintain it; and commenced welcoming big-dollar donations after earlier saying he would not take any bigger than $500.
Michels and Evers are in a detailed race with broad implications for nationwide politics in 2024 and past. Evers has highlighted his standing as the one barrier to complete GOP management, together with his vetoes this 12 months of Republican laws that may have made it tougher for some voters to solid ballots in the important thing battleground state. A Michels victory would give the GOP free rein to move these adjustments and extra.
It is the most costly governor’s race within the nation by way of advert spending, with either side spending about $55 million on TV to this point, in keeping with AdImpact Politics, which tracks spending by main campaigns.
Michels declined an interview request. However when requested about his change in place at a marketing campaign cease Tuesday, Michels stated, “I have been very clear and constant all through that I’m pro-life, and I make no apologies for that.”
Michels stated he would signal a invoice creating abortion exceptions in instances of rape and incest as a result of if the Legislature passes it, meaning “the folks have spoken.”
It isn’t clear whether or not Michels can pay any value with voters for his evolving place on abortion or different points. Brandon Scholz, a Republican strategist, stated he doubted it. Most voters have already determined whom they help, he stated.
“The independents that began on this race after the first have picked their sides,” Scholz stated. “Republicans have made up their minds on Michels. I do not see something on the market that may transfer Republicans to vote for Tony Evers.”
That hasn’t stopped Evers from in search of to batter Michels on the abortion problem.
“It isn’t stunning he would make a last-minute, dishonest try to cover his radical file on abortion, training, and extra,” Evers stated in a press release to The Related Press.
Michels is in his first marketing campaign since an unsuccessful run for U.S. Senate 18 years in the past. Barry Burden, a political science professor and director of the Elections Analysis Heart on the College of Wisconsin, stated such candidates “make errors typically.”
“They are saying issues that commit then to a place or a path that they finally do not need to be on in order that creates inconsistencies with their positions as they attempt to stroll again earlier views,” he stated.
Michels’ abortion shift got here after a major battle the place his chief rival, former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, additionally opposed the rape and incest exceptions. After successful, Michels clearly got here below stress to melt his place, Burden stated.
A Marquette College Legislation College ballot taken shortly earlier than Michels’ reversal discovered 83% of respondents — together with 70% of Republicans — supported exceptions for rape and incest.
“Abortion is a bit of little bit of a worrying signal for Republicans as a problem and it is perhaps the one factor that finally ends up saving some Democrats who’re having a troublesome go of it,” Burden stated.
To push again, Michels accuses Evers of breaking guarantees with voters on a wide range of points, together with adjustments in strategy to combating COVID-19 in 2020. He additionally factors out that Evers proposed tax will increase, after saying he did not intend to boost taxes, after which later took credit score for tax cuts handed by the GOP-controlled Legislature that he signed into legislation.
As a part of his technique to make the race about crime and security, Michels has additionally attacked Evers over his administration paroling folks convicted of homicide and rape and stated that Evers has damaged his promise made in 2018 to not launch violent offenders.
Evers doesn’t decide who’s granted parole, one thing that has occurred routinely below each Republican and Democratic governors for many years.

QB Grade: Nebraska Football’s Dylan Raiola vs. Wisconsin
Saturday was a day Nebraska fans will not forget for a long time. The Huskers secured one of their biggest victories of the last decade, and their freshman star quarterback was a huge reason why.
Dylan Raiola delivered a masterful performance as Nebraska powered past Wisconsin 44-25, securing the Cornhuskers’ first bowl berth since 2016. Playing in front of a raucous Memorial Stadium crowd, Raiola showcased his accuracy and leadership, getting the most important victory of his young career, courtesy of one of his most efficient outings.
Raiola completed 28 of 38 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown, orchestrating an offense that controlled the game with 29 first downs and over 33 minutes of possession. He displayed excellent accuracy, particularly in the intermediate passing game, finding Jacory Barney Jr. and Emmett Johnson for pivotal completions. The two players combined for 170 receiving yards.
While the stat sheet shows only one touchdown pass, Raiola’s impact went beyond the box score. His ability to spread the ball among eight different receivers kept Wisconsin’s defense off balance, while his quick decision-making prevented sacks and extended drives. His lone touchdown throw, a perfectly placed ball to Jahmal Banks late in the second quarter, helped Nebraska pull away before halftime.
Raiola’s poise in critical moments stood out. Facing third-and-long situations, he converted twice with pinpoint throws to sustain scoring drives. Additionally, his pre-snap adjustments demonstrated his growing football IQ, as he consistently identified mismatches and exploited them. Nebraska converted four of nine third downs, largely thanks to Raiola’s composure.
Overall, Raiola’s performance was instrumental in Nebraska’s milestone victory. His leadership and efficiency set the tone for an offense that dominated Wisconsin from start to finish. It was a true showcase of what the offense can be under Dana Holgorsen’s leadership. With the win, the Cornhuskers are back in postseason play, and their freshman quarterback has firmly cemented himself as the face of the program’s resurgence.

Gas prices drop lower during busy holiday travel season in Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Gas prices are the cheapest they’ve been since the pandemic, just as people prepare to travel for the holidays.
According to AAA Wisconsin, the average gas prices is $2.86 per gallon in the state, a new low since 2020.
”We’ve had so many disruptions in the last four to five years between Covid and then the Ukraine conflict that has sent prices either far down or bringing them to historic highs,” AAA Director of Public Affairs Nick Jarmusz said. “We kind of forget what normal is.”
He said the low cost at the pump is a result of peak summer travel season ending, an even supply and demand for fuel and fewer global crises.
”Right now we’re in a pretty favorable balance between lower demand and pretty plentiful supply and no real disruptions to speak of,” he said.
People can save more money at the pump if they drive the speed limit.
”By sticking closer to the speed limit, avoiding aggressive driving in situations, you can actually increase your fuel efficiency by about 40% or up to 40%,” Jarmusz said. “Which can add up to pretty significant savings.”
If trends continue, he also said prices might drop even more. ”Really, I would not be surprised to see these prices continue to go down,” Jarmusz said. “I don’t think we’ve seen the lowest prices we’ll see this year yet.”
According to AAA the best times to travel before Thanksgiving on Thursday is in the morning hours on Tuesday and Wednesday. Roads will be busiest in the afternoons.
