Initial test finds 'forever chemical' in Mount Rushmore drinking water at level exceeding new limit • South Dakota Searchlight
A sample of Mount Rushmore National Memorial’s drinking water had levels of a “forever chemical” exceeding new limits established by the federal government.
Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, or PFOS, is a member of the synthetic chemical group known collectively as perfluorinated alkylated substances, or PFAS. The chemicals have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s and don’t break down easily in the environment or in the human body. Research indicates PFAS exposure may be linked to negative developmental and reproductive effects, and an increased risk of some cancers.
A 2023 test of Mount Rushmore’s drinking water showed a PFOS concentration of 9.8 parts per trillion, more than two times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency’s new limit of 4 parts per trillion. The EPA finalized limits for several types of PFAS last month.
The result doesn’t necessarily mean Mount Rushmore is out of compliance with the EPA’s new rule, which will be implemented in phases. Current testing is preliminary. Tests won’t count toward the new limits until 2027, and the EPA will use annual running averages to determine compliance. The EPA won’t begin issuing violations until 2029.

The current sampling is part of a multi-year, nationwide testing effort by the EPA. The South Dakota Association of Rural Water Systems is conducting a majority of the testing in the state.
In publicly available results published so far, Mount Rushmore is the only site in South Dakota to test above the new EPA limits for forever chemicals. Additional Mount Rushmore sampling results will be published in the coming weeks and months. Elsewhere in South Dakota, some of the chemicals have been detected at levels below the new EPA limits.
PFAS from firefighting foam was previously known to have contaminated groundwater at military installations in or near locations including Rapid City and Sioux Falls, leading to mitigation efforts in those areas.
In an emailed statement, Mount Rushmore National Memorial spokesman Earl Perez-Foust said the National Park Service is monitoring the results and considering any mitigation that may be necessary.
“This could include treatment or considering a new water source,” Perez-Foust said. “Public health and safety is always our top priority.”
Reverse osmosis, granular activated carbon, nanofiltration and other methods have been identified as methods of removing PFAS from drinking water, according to the EPA.
The exact source of the contamination at Mount Rushmore is unknown, said Galen Hoogestraat, a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey’s Dakota Water Science Center.
“In general, PFAS sources can come from anywhere humans are interacting with the environment: food wrappers, water-resistant clothing, common products and waste,” Hoogestraat said.

For over a decade, Hoogestraat has studied perchlorate contamination in Mount Rushmore’s groundwater and local streams from former fireworks displays at the memorial. He said the amount of perchlorate in the water has “dropped substantially” in the last decade.
Hoogestraat said the memorial provides water to over 2 million visitors every year from a “very small postage stamp of an area in the Black Hills,” because the memorial is limited to using water from within the park boundaries.
That source is a fractured rock system that collects rain and groundwater, which makes it susceptible to contamination.
“There’s very little soil on top of the rocks, so there’s very little filtration of anything that comes from the surface — good or bad,” Hoogestraat said.
That can create volatile test results, since concentrations of contaminants can vary based on the seasons and weather conditions.
“There needs to be more sampling done to assess the variability around this,” Hoogestraat said, “and wrap our arms around the trends of this: Is this a long-term, persistent thing, or will this be variable over time?”

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – The recent disappearance of a woman from the Spirit Lake Reservation is sparking questions about the newest safety alerts in North Dakota.
At one point or another, we’ve heard our phones go off with a missing person alert.
That notification comes with a lot of behind-the-scenes criteria that need to be met.
More than 1,300 people went missing in North Dakota last year alone.
The state’s public alert system helps spread the word to locate the missing.
“When someone’s abducted against their own will or have physical or mental impairments that make them not understand what’s going on, and abducted children also,” said Jenna Clawson Huibregtse.
Those are just a few of the key details examined when determining which alert to use.
Jenna Clawson Huibregtse with the state patrol said the system has five alert types: Amber, Silver, Blue, Feather, and Missing Endangered.
The two newest ones are Feather Alert and Missing Endangered.
Both are for endangered or abducted adults, but the Feather Alert applies specifically to Indigenous adults.
“When our people go missing, we need to have some sort of alert to ensure that we are able to act swiftly to try and get a positive resolve,” said Vicki Alberts.
Alberts with Spirit Lake public relations said the alert plays a big part for tribes.
This past weekend, the state issued a Feather Alert for 20-year-old Danica White, but Alberts said some thought the alert didn’t work properly.
“Only certain people received an alert on their phone, via text, and that no sound was associated with that alert,” said Alberts.
Clawson Huibregtse said the system worked as it should.
“For abductions, we send out that wireless emergency alert, that’s what goes across the phones, and if there’s not an abduction, we still do an alert, but we utilize other communication platforms,” said Huibregtse.
She points out why not all alerts include that loud notification we all know.
“Alerts fatigue thing is huge, and the effectiveness rate of an alert has to be high for the system to work,” said Huibregtse.
While notifications may differ depending on circumstances, Huibregtse said they always focus on alerting the public and searching for the person.
She said other states send out notifications for all missing people and experience a success rate of 11-35% compared to North Dakota’s rate of nearly 100%.

HATTON, N.D. — Crews were fighting the grain elevator fire at Anchor Ingredients in Hatton on Wednesday, Nov. 5, for around seven hours.
There were two grain elevators at Anchor Ingredients that caught on fire, with one of them falling under a controlled collapse, with the fire spreading to the elevator.

The Minnesota women’s basketball team is picking things up where they left them to end the 2024-25 season.
The reigning Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament champions played host to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Tuesday night to open the new season and won, 91-47, at Williams Arena.
“Defensively, our young ladies played really, really hard,” head coach Dawn Plitzuweit said. “They were really disruptive. It was really fun to watch. And then on the offensive end, we didn’t make as many shots as we wanted to, but our offensive rebounding was absolutely outstanding.
“The energy really propelled us, and I thought this was a great way to open the season and get things started.”
The Gophers have high expectations after going 25-11 in 2024-25, the last five while winning the WBIT after being snubbed for an NCAA tournament bid. Minnesota struggled in Big Ten play, going 8-10, but was dominant against nonconference opponents, going 17-1.
While the challenges against other Big Ten teams are still a month out, they had a roster shake-up that provided new challenges for the foreseeable future.
Forward Mallory Heyer announced on social media last week that she was leaving the team and entering the transfer portal for ‘personal reasons.’ Heyer’s decision to leave was a shock to many on the team, but her departure led to other players being the stars on both sides of the ball in the season opener.
Senior guard Amaya Battle stepped up where Heyer was best, leading the team with 10 defensive rebounds, while freshman guard Makena Christian made a strong first impression, leading the way with 23 points and making 50% of her 3-point attempts.
The reigning Wisconsin Player of the Year was ranked as the best guard in the state last season, and her play on Tuesday showed 3,300-plus Gophers fans the excitement around their newest starter was well worth it.
“I thought she handled the emotions of playing in her first home contest at a really high level,” Plitzuweit said of Christian’s performance. “I think she’s someone who’s very calm and steady, anyway, but I thought she did some really good things on both end of the court.”
“I was excited to play with all my teammates,” Christian said. “Being in the Barn was really cool. I think the energy was really cool. But the main thing was I was really excited to play with my teammates.”
“Big shoutout to Amaya,” center Sophie Hart said. “Because 10 defensive rebounds, oh my gosh. She has really stepped up in that category. I mean, obviously tonight, but even in practice. So, I’d say it was a team effort.”
Hart scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and grad forward Finau Tonga added 14 points. She was 6 for 8 at the free throw line and corralled seven rebounds.
The Gophers are back in action at 7 p.m. Friday against Manhattan at Williams Arena.
