Early voting applications — with new Voter ID requirements — open to Nebraska voters

LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – Nebraskans wishing to vote early in the state’s May primary can now submit early voting applications to their county election office.

Voters may either download the application or request one from their county election office.

The Secretary of State’s office says the state’s new voter ID requirements that take effect beginning with this primary makes things a little different.

When applying to vote early, you will need to either write your driver’s license or state ID number on the application or attach a photocopy of an acceptable form of identification to the application. That photocopy must be returned with the application whether filing in person, by mail, by email or by fax.

If the voter does not have an ID and cannot get one due to a disability or illness, they may attach their completed reasonable impediment certification to the application.

Once the application is returned with their ID information, the voter ID requirement is fulfilled and voters need not present their ID again for this primary election. Voters should be sure to sign and return the early voting application to their county election office.

The state considers the following acceptable forms of photo ID:

  • Nebraska driver’s license or state ID card issued by the DMV
  • U.S. Passport
  • Military ID
  • Tribal ID
  • Hospital or nursing home record
  • Nebraska political subdivision ID
  • Nebraska college/university ID, public or private

Nebraskans can receive a free state ID for voting purposes from the DMV. If the voter was born in Nebraska and needs a certified copy of their Nebraska birth certificate, they may receive a free copy by contacting Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services. A birth certificate is not a valid form of voter ID.
