OXFORD — After a roaring start to Ole Miss basketball’s SEC season, the Rebels are in a lull.
No. 16 Ole Miss (15-4, 4-2 SEC) plays at No. 24 Missouri (15-4, 4-2) on Saturday (5 p.m., SEC Network). It’s a chance for the Rebels to break a two-game losing streak that has come in painful fashion.
The Rebels’ four SEC wins have come by an average of 10.3 points. Both of Ole Miss’ conference losses, at No. 14 Mississippi State and against No.13 Texas A&M, have been one-possession games. Ole Miss coach Chris Beard apologized after the Rebels lost a late eight-point lead against Texas A&M.
Missouri has a strong offense for Ole Miss’ defense to contend with. Missouri has the No. 5 scoring offense in the SEC (83.2 points per game). The Tigers are No. 4 in the SEC in team field goal percentage (48.4%).
Do-it-all junior Mark Mitchell leads the Missouri offense. He is a 6-foot-9, 230-pound transfer from Duke and can play as a guard or as a forward. Mitchell has scored at least 15 points in three of his last four SEC games. He also leads Missouri in rebounding (95) and blocks (16).
Despite the two recent losses, Ole Miss’ defense has asserted itself as one of the best in the SEC. The Rebels average 65.5 points allowed, which is No. 3 in the SEC. Ole Miss is doing it through forcing turnovers. The Rebels force an SEC-high 10.1 steals per game. Missouri is No. 2 with 10 steals per game.

The Ole Miss defense will do well to keep three Missouri players — Caleb Grill, Marques Warrick and Anthony Robinson— from getting open 3-point looks. They are the Missouri players with at least 30 3-point attempts who are converting at a 40% rate or better.
Ole Miss vs Missouri prediction, picks
Ole Miss 68, Missouri 65: Ole Miss is playing to avoid a three-game losing streak. The Rebels have the defense to hold down Missouri from 3-pointers. Because Missouri is not a dominant rebounding team, it bodes well for Ole Miss to keep even on the glass. Keeping rebounding totals close has been a trend in Ole Miss’ wins.
