Minneapolis animal shelter waiving adoption fees for residents this weekend
MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Animal Care and Control is hoping to clear the shelter this weekend by waiving adoption fees for dozens of pets.
Minneapolis residents will not have to pay an adoption fee for dogs seven months and older and cats. They will still have to pay a licensing fee of $15-30.
Those who don’t reside in Minneapolis can still take advantage of the event, with adoption fees set at $25 for cats and $100 for dogs. Puppies six months and younger are $250 to adopt regardless of resident status.
Anyone wishing to adopt a new furry friend can visit the shelter at 212 17th Ave. N. from 1 to 7 p.m. on Thursday and 1 to 6 p.m. on Friday.
A volunteer or staff member will be available to help hopeful pet parents find the right match.
All cats and dogs available for adoption are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
One of the available adoptees listed on Minneapolis Animal Care and Control’s website is Gruyere, also known as Fancy Cheese Gary. He’s a 1-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix that has been at the shelter since March 13. He is described as a “sweet, playful, snuggly boy waiting patiently for his forever home.”
Plenty of other pets are available for adoption and can be viewed online prior to visiting the shelter.

Minneapolis to Host 2026 SummerSlam
Minneapolis is set to host WWE SummerSlam over two nights in 2026 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
WWE, in partnership with Minnesota Sports and Events, announced SummerSlam will take place on August 1 and 2, 2026, marking the first premium live event in Minneapolis since “TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs” in 2019, as well as the first time WWE will host a stadium event in the city.
Leading up to SummerSlam, WWE and MNSE will host various fan and community events. WWE EVP of Talent Relations and Head of Communications Chris Legentil said the company is “excited to bring two nights of SummerSlam” to the Twin Cities.
“U.S. Bank Stadium is an absolutely world-class venue, situation in a city with rich wrestling history and an amazing fan base,” Legentil said.
Wendy Blackshaw, President and CEO of MSE, echoed similar sentiments, noting that the authority is “thrilled to welcome the WWE Universe to Minnesota for SummerSlam.”
“We will make this summertime wrestling extravaganza accessible for fans of all ages,” Blackshaw said. “Through a variety of festivities and ancillary events in the Twin Cities and affordable tickets to the main events at U.S. Bank Stadium, this will be a SummerSlam for all.”

This year’s SummerSlam, set to take place on Saturday, August 3 in Cleveland, already revealed record-breaking ticket sales. The 2024 event follows 2023’s SummerSlam at Detroit’s Ford Field, which set a gate record for any non-WrestleMania event with $8.5 million.
WWE’s live event schedule is stacked this summer; on June 15, the entertainment company will host its first-ever event in Scotland for “Clash at the Castle” at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro, following the previous record-setting “Clash at the Castle” in Cardiff back in 2022. Murder Conviction Thrown Out By MN Appeals Court, Calls For New Trial
MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota’s Court of Appeals on Tuesday tossed out the murder conviction of a man that prosecutors said shot and killed star student and quarterback Deshaun Hill Jr., of Minneapolis.
Cody L. Fohrenkam was wrongfully detained when he made certain statements later used against him, the court argued:
“Because Fohrenkam made his incriminating statements during this period of continued detention — which the state never justified by presenting evidence explaining the basis for such conduct — Fohrenkam’s statements must be suppressed as the product of an unlawful seizure.”
The decision on Tuesday reverses a lower court ruling and calls for a new trial.

Hill was 15 at the time and attending North High School. He was an honor roll student and starting quarterback.
Hennepin County Judge Julie Allyn sentenced Cody L. Fohrenkam to 463 months — or more than 38 years — in prison. Fohrenkam and Hill did not know each other, and the shooting was apparently random.

On Feb. 9, 2022, Minneapolis police were dispatched to Golden Valley Road and Penn Avenue North on a report of a shooting.
Police found Hill unresponsive, and medics immediately transported him to North Memorial Medical Center, where he died.
Video surveillance from the scene showed Fohrenkam walking on the sidewalk and possibly brushing shoulders with Hill, who was walking in the other direction, according to authorities. Video does not capture the shooting, but shows Fohrenkam fleeing the scene, investigators said.
Witnesses told police that Fohrenkam matched the description of the shooter, according to the criminal complaint.
