Demonstrators protest police shooting, hotel death

Ohio police have released more video from a fatal police shooting in Milwaukee, and protesters called for justice, on Thursday, July 18.

MILWAUKEE – Police officers from Columbus, Ohio – in Milwaukee to help with law enforcement during the Republican National Convention – shot and killed a man on Tuesday, July 16.

A portion of the bodycam video was released later that day. Now, the rest has come out.

Video showed the man, identified as Samuel Sharpe, with knives in each hand moving toward another person before police shot him.

Officers also handcuffed the other man, set up crime scene tape and discussed communication.

On Thursday, hundreds marched downtown – just outside of the RNC – in support of Sharpe and another man who was recently killed.

Red Arrow Park filled with protesters before the group headed onto the streets with their message.

The protest focused on two men killed in two very different situations. But both families said the deaths of their loved ones did not have to happen.

Demonstrators stopped outside the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee hotel. That’s where 43-year-old D’Vontaye Mitchell died after security guards tried to restrain him.

Witnesses said Mitchell tried locking himself in a women’s restroom and fought with security. Employees held him down until police arrived; when they did, he was unresponsive.

The employees involved have been fired. Supporters want to see the people involved criminally charged.

The march also focused on Sharpe. His family said Sharpe chose to live in a tent community, and he was still very connected to his family.

They said, in recent days, Sharpe told them a man had been threatening him. They said he left the tent community, but returned to get his dog.

Sharpe’s brother told FOX6 the 43-year-old had advanced multiple sclerosis and struggled to stand. He believes his brother was not the aggressor in Tuesday’s encounter.

“I believe my brother was defending himself. If anything he was defending himself,” he said. “If you’ve ever seen someone with advanced MS, it’s very laborious to walk, anything like that.

“It’s like putting a child against an adult. A toddler that barely knows how to walk. He ain’t going to get away. The man that was in that video knew all of that information as well.”

Both families said their fights do not end Thursday. They will continue to rally and protest until they get what they believe is justice.

Critically missing Milwaukee woman; Silver Alert issued

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Police Department is seeking the public’s help in locating a critically missing 71-year-old woman.

Police said Orelia Rose McDowell was last seen near 38th and Nash on foot at approximately 5:30 p.m.

McDowell is described as 5 feet, 3 inches tall, around 157 pounds and with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a tan jacket, pink shirt, pink pants and pink Puma tennis shoes.

A Silver Alert was also issued.

Anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of Orelia is asked to call MPD – District 7 at 414-935-7272.

At least two apartments damaged in fire on Glenbrook Road near Northridge Mall

A least two apartments were damaged in a fire on Glenbrook Road near Northridge Mall in Milwaukee.

Firefighters are still working to determine a cause, but say no one was injured other than a firefighter who cut his hand.

Fire leaves significant damage to Milwaukee apartment building.

Investigators are still determining the extent of the damage to the apartment building. They’ve told TMJ4’s Mikenzie Hammel that the fire appears to have started in a second-story unit and that the flames damaged the apartment directly above it.

Residents in the building tell Mikenzie the entire hallway was filled with smoke.

Mikenzie is on the scene working to learn more about how many people may be displaced this Thanksgiving Day. This story will be updated on air and online.

A Milwaukee man was charged in connection to a fatal shooting at a youth flag football game, but new details have emerged regarding the incident.

MILWAUKEE – A Milwaukee man was charged in connection to a fatal shooting at a youth flag football game, but new details have emerged regarding the incident.

That shooting happened in mid-October at Milwaukee Public Schools’ South Stadium.

47-year-old Raysean Barnes died.

Through open records FOX6 News obtained, there are new details about the case. It explains how surveillance and cell phone records led to charges.

Investigators say he was at the game to watch a loved one play when he got from the stands and headed to the parking lot to get a child a drink of water. As he walked from the bleachers, he got caught in the middle of a fight.

Prosecutors say 30-year-old Gavino Avalos-Morales pulled out a gun, pointed it at Barnes and shot him in the chest. He died at the hospital.

Investigators learned through interviews the accused gunman was never supposed to be at the game.

An acquaintance said Gavino-Avalos gave him a ride and followed him inside with another man. Minutes later, an argument began and shots were fired.

Surveillance video showed the suspect running away, but more importantly, arriving in a white Mazda CX-9.

Police were able to track the vehicle back to the accused shooter. They arrested the 30-year-old four days later.

When he was taken into custody, police searched his cellphone and discovered he was contacted by criminal defense attorneys in the days after the shooting. He also texted a loved one that his life was over.
