Iowa Wrestling: No. 2 Iowa vs Chattanooga – Preview, How to Watch Guide, & Match Thread

Our Iowa Hawkeyes hit the street this weekend and are heading south to tackle UT Chattanooga inside McKenzie Area at 6PM GT.

This may mark the fifth time we’ve battled the Mocs (4-0 all time), with the latest being a 39-0 blasting within the 2019-2020 season again at pleasant confines of CHA.

There isn’t a deep historical past of twin motion between these two groups, however there may be personnel smart.

Terry Manufacturers was the pinnacle coach of the Mocs manner again from 2002-2005 and located some success in his quick time there. He led them to a convention title in his last season and capped off the run with 2 All-Individuals.

UT CHATTANOOGA (2-5)

The Mocs have been in a little bit of a rut the previous couple of years and the struggles have continued into the 2022 season. They sit at 2-5 in twin meet competitors, however 3 of these losses have come to fellow Massive Ten groups: Wisconsin, Purdue and Illinois.

They’ve 5 returning NCAA qualifiers: Logan Ashton (125), Brayden Palmer (133), Rocky Jordan (174), Matthew Waddell (184), and Logan Andrew (285). For word, that’s the identical Rocky Jordan that was beforehand a R12er at Ohio State a few years in the past.

They don’t have the roster-to-roster fireplace energy to actually contend for a win right here, however they might get some sneaky wins at some key weights to make issues attention-grabbing, particularly if we battle to achieve bonus factors in our favored matches.

I’m primarily 133, 149, 174, and 184 as their huge alternatives on the evening.

IOWA (6-0)

We’re coming off an emotional win final weekend in opposition to instate rival, ISU, 18-15. The Cyclones boast a rattling good lineup this 12 months and regardless of the loss, they’re as much as #6 within the coaches rankings.

Nonetheless, we must always count on to see Woods get a majority of the bouts at 141 going ahead

IMO – we have been a bit lackluster and stale-footed, however we survived an important early season check. Despite the fact that we break up the matches 5-5, we got here out with 3 huge bonus level wins to push us to victory. I’m a bit extra optimistic than most, hell, more often than not I’m fairly harsh on our guys, however contemplating our limitations and our ongoing well being battles, I used to be proud of the outcome.

Backside line, we took their best possible shot and survived.

If we roll that twin again once more in mid-February and we might win 8 or 9 matches. Perhaps.

Nonetheless, with the massive staff win, we had a handful of men uncover some December humility. There’s little question that these early season losses will come again to hang-out us come seeding time in March (until we pull some huge upsets all through the course of the season).

Moreover, we noticed Spencer Lee and Actual Woods lastly make their manner again into the limelight, although let or not it’s identified, that Spencer received’t be wrestling this weekend. Getting these two powerhorses again, even on a semi-regular foundation, will probably be a giant morale enhance to all Iowa supporters.

PROBABLE LINEUPS:

125: Aidan Harris // Charles Matthews vs Logan Ashton

133: Cullan Schriever vs #27 Brayden Palmer

141: #2 Actual Woods // Drew Bennett vs Dayne Dalrymple

149: #6 Max Murin vs #27 Noah Castillo

157: #24 Cobe Siebrecht vs Lincoln Heck

165: #14 Patrick Kennedy vs Jackson Hurst

174: #14 Nelson Manufacturers vs #16 Rocky Jordan

184: #8 Abe Assad vs #31 Matthew Waddell

197: #6 Jacob Warner vs Jake Boyd

285: #3 Tony Cassioppi vs Logan Andrew

KEY MATCH-UPS:

133: Cullan Schriever vs #27 Brayden Palmer

Jesse Ybarra was listed mid-week on the Probables Lineup, however he has since headed North as an alternative to the UNI Open. With Teske nonetheless nursing some kind of ailment that leaves Cullan Schriever to man 133lbs once more.

We had one other tough go final week, which tells me that is in all probability certainly one of Cullan’s last makes an attempt to remain within the dialogue at this weight. Brayden Palmer isn’t a world beater, however he’s the kind of man Cullan would run into on the early rounds on the NCAA’s. If Cullan ever desires to actually contend for a beginning spot that is the precise sort of man he must beat convincingly.

157: #24 Cobe Siebrecht vs Lincoln Heck

It is a match I totally count on Cobe to win, however I’m keying on it to see if he can pull off his sixth consecutive bonus level win. Heck has been majored as soon as to this point in his profession and that got here in opposition to former Citadel grappler Dazjon Castro (who now wrestles for Pitt). He was a R12er final 12 months as nicely.

So right here we stand, our man who likes to go huge in opposition to a real grinder who’s totally able to retaining a match shut late.

Caleb Rathjen can also be heading to the UNI Open which signifies that Cobe has locked this weight down, not less than for the foreseeable future.

174: #14 Nelson Manufacturers vs #16 Rocky Jordan

That is, surely, the marquee match of the evening. Rocky Jordan (from the famed Jordan wrestling household) confirmed promise early in his profession by reaching the R12 his sophomore season at Ohio State, however would go on to lose his beginning spot and ultimately switch out. To date he’s 5-1 on the 12 months and appears to be bouncing again a bit.

Manufacturers leads their head-to-head 2-0, with every match being determined by 3 factors or much less. If the streak holds true this will probably be one other tightly contested bout this time round too.

Although it needs to be of word that they each confronted one another at 184lbs beforehand and Nelson continues to be working his manner again from his elbow surgical procedure.

To date he’s appeared stellar on the mat, however tonight will probably be a giant alternative to showcase what he can do at his correct weight.

Broadcast Information

Opponent: UT Chattanooga

Twin time: 6:00PM GT (Central) // Saturday, Dec. 10 2022

Location: McKenzie Area // Chattanooga, TN

TV/ On-line: ESPN+ ($$$)

Radio: iHeartRadio (AM800 KXIC)

Further Notes:

We’re sending a small military north to the UNI Open at this time that embody:

Hooked up: Jesse Ybarra (133), Jace Rhodes (133), Carter martinson (157), Jude Hyperlink (174), Easton Fleshman (285), and Gage Mart (285

Unattached: Drake Ayala (125), Caleb Rathjen (157), Zach Glazier (197)

This marks Ayala’s and Ybarra’s first motion this season. I assume Drake is unattached to maintain his redshirt intact. Additionally Ybarra at 133 is curious. He was listed on the 125 probables final week, so he might be struggling a bit to get right down to weight or he’s attempting to get into the combination at 133.

And as of this writing, Ybarra has dropped two matches… not the most effective exhibiting for a man that’s making an attempt to crack the lineup.

What Fran McCaffery said at Iowa basketball Media Day

“I think for Payton we all have an expectation, you know, when your best player comes back and lead the league in made threes, well, he’s going to make more threes and he’s going to get more rebounds.

“The thing I’ve been impressed with is he was a really good rebounder last year. He’s a special offensive rebounder.

“A lot of shooters just don’t do that. They hang around on the perimeter, and that’s that. Throw me the ball, and I’ll shoot it in the hole for you.

“He does that, but he’s done more off the dribble. He’s done more passing to open people and reading situations, which is what you would expect from a senior.

“Think about him. Freshman year he played a lot. He was on the Big Ten Championship team. Sophomore year, Rookie of the Year in the league. Last year led the league in made threes, was an All-League player.

“Now, I think how do you go from being a second- or third-team All-League player to first-team? Obviously it’s consistency of effort and performance, and he is going to work harder.”

Ohio State Offensive Lineman Acknowledged After Win Over Iowa

Back in the offseason, the assumption was that Seth McLaughlin would win the starting center job after transferring from Alabama. Not only did he win that job but so far this season, he has played quite well.

This is certainly a welcome sight after the Ohio State Buckeyes struggled with offensive line consistency in 2023 and McLaughlin himself had a down year with the Crimson Tide.

Through the non-conference schedule and two Big Ten Conference games, the pairing has been perfect for both parties. The experienced center has been a strong addition in the trenches and will look to continue to be a dominant force throughout the rest of the season.

Just how dominant has McLaughlin been?

In the win against the Iowa Hawkeyes, McLaughlin actually posted the highest grade of any center in the country during week six according to Pro Football Focus. His 78.6 mark is an excellent grade, yet not surprising considering how solid he has been in the middle.

Not only has McLaughlin been solid this season, but the rest of the offensive line has played quite well. Against the Oregon Ducks, McLaughlin, Josh Simmons, Donovan Jackson, Tegra Tshabola and Josh Fryar will all need to be at their best. It seems like they have been at their best to this point, however, this will be the toughest test yet for the whole team.

If this unit can enforce physicality in the run game and give Will Howard time to operate on Saturday, then not only might McLaughlin grade high with PFF once again, but the rest of the unit may fair pretty well.
