A new ranking of the best streets in America for Christmas shopping features several entries from Chicago’s suburbs.

The ranking, compiled by Present.com via a survey for more than 3,000 people, features a total of four streets from the state of Illinois.

Tops among those streets is Woodstock Square in suburban Woodstock, which was ranked as the No. 37 street for Christmas shopping in the U.S.

Woodstock Square is well-known nationally because of its prominent place in the film “Groundhog Day,” where most of the movie was filmed in the early 1990s.

According to “Naturally McHenry County,” the square transforms into a wonderland every holiday season, with lights, locally-owned shops and plenty of cozy restaurants to choose from. Caroling and parades are also part of the holiday fun in the area, according to the website.

Princeton’s Main Street checked in at No. 98, Geneva’s Third Street at No. 100, and Galena’s Main Street was No. 121.

Main Street in Aurora, New York was No. 1 in the rankings, followed by streets in Cooperstown, New York, New Hope, Pennsylvania, Mystic, Connecticut and Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

Madison, Indiana’s Main Street was the top-ranked street in Indiana at No. 51. Broad Street in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin was ranked No. 46, making it the top street in the state.

The ranking aimed to celebrate shopping options that are located close together, celebrating “craftsmanship and artistry” and building “community connections,” according to the website.

Dana Dimel, a longtime college coach who led programs at Wyoming, Houston and UTEP, died in his sleep Tuesday. He was 62.

Dimel served as a senior offensive assistant this season at Illinois, following a six-year tenure at UTEP. He is most closely associated with Kansas State, where he was an All-America offensive lineman before beginning his coaching career under Bill Snyder. Dimel twice served as Kansas State’s offensive coordinator, most recently from 2009 to 2017. He spent a total of 20 seasons on Snyder’s staffs at Kansas State and was part of 12 bowl teams and the Big 12 championship squad of 2012.

“Obviously, we are very saddened by the passing of Dana,” Snyder said in a statement. “He was a special friend and coaching companion. I admired his passion for helping his players and fellow coaches. He was a big part of the development of the Kansas State football program, and along with his wife Julie, very meaningful in the Manhattan community.”

Dimel coached three seasons at both Houston and Wyoming, and went 50-88 overall as an FBS head coach. He also worked as an Arizona assistant from 2006 to 2008.

Illinois hired Dimel in July.

“He affected the lives of countless coaches, players, and staff members for more than three decades in college football,” Illinois coach Bret Bielema said in a statement. “His influence on our program was incredible to witness and be a part of. His infectious positive energy had a major impact on me, our players, and everyone in our building every day. He will be dearly missed.”

After a volatile week in college basketball when highly ranked teams were beaten like drums, Illinois took advantage in the latest AP Top 25 voting.

The 6-1 Illini – who had a very nice 90-77 win against then-No. 19 Arkansas on a neutral floor in Kansas City, Missouri, last Thursday – re-entered the Top 25 at No. 19. That’s 12 spots better one week after they had received the 31st-most points in the voting.

College basketball is looking wildly unpredictable already. Mighty UConn lost three straight games last week. Fellow top-six teams Gonzaga, Iowa State and Houston lost four times between them. North Carolina and Indiana lost twice apiece. There are going to be a great many teams capable of doing damage when the NCAA Tournament rolls around.

The Illini, with so much positional versatility and three-point shooting, should be one of those teams. But a poor start in conference play for the Illini is the last thing they need. Their Big Ten opener is at Northwestern this Friday at 8 p.m. Central.

As one of 62 voters in the weekly AP poll, I had the Illini at No. 20 on my preseason ballot and since have ranked them 21st, 23rd and now 15th. They are one of my biggest climbers this week.

The Big Ten has four teams in the current poll: Purdue at 8, Wisconsin at 11, Oregon at 12, Illinois at 19. Michigan State was first among others receiving votes.
