For some, basketball is just a fun sport to play. But for others, it’s a ticket to a better future. 

Several Michigan high school athletes have already signed up to play college basketball next year. But before that time comes, a few of them will get the chance to play against each other. 

Dreamz Two Reality, an independent recruiting platform for student athletes in Michigan, will host its first All-American basketball game at 4 p.m. this Saturday, May 4, at Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi. Dreamz Two Reality owner and founder Roy Jackson joined The Metro on Thursday to discuss the game and what it could mean for the students.

Jackson says he played basketball professionally overseas for seven years and is thinking about the next generation of hoopers. 

“I always want to give back to the kids because I know how hard it is nowadays,” Jackson said. “And I got a lot of kids hitting me up all over the Midwest. And I’m just like, let me just create a platform that had been missing for a while, that would give kids the opportunity to display their talent.”

For players, Jackson says, it can be hard to get the attention of basketball programs.

“Michigan, we got talent, and I feel like it needs to be displayed,” he said. “We got 14 Division One Signees that didn’t make it to the Jordan Brand [Classic] or the McDonald’s All American, but they still are all Americans. And I’m like, I’m from Michigan, so let me bring this platform here. Two, three, four years from now you never know how big you might get.”

Washington ― Vice President Kamala Harris plans to visit Detroit on Monday as part of a multi-state economic opportunity tour focused on investing in communities and highlighting administration achievements, the White House said.

This trip would be her second visit to the state this year and her fifth since taking office.

Harris started the economic tour in Atlanta this week, where she held a moderated conversation Monday. In Detroit, she is expected to emphasize the work the Biden administration has done to boost access to capital, strengthen small businesses, address housing costs, forgive student loans and medical debt, and fund infrastructure projects, according to an announcement from the White House.

Harris was last in Michigan in February when she gave a speech on abortion rights in Grand Rapids and held a roundtable conversation as part of her Fight for Reproductive Freedoms tour.

Harris’ visit will come days after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Freeland on Wednesday, during which he thanked U.S. Supreme Court justices for overturning Roe v. Wade and surmised that a states-based approach to regulating abortion had largely removed controversy over the issue.

“You have to fight for what’s in your heart and what’s the right thing to do, but remember you also have to get elected,” Trump said.

Trump also criticized his ongoing hush money trial in New York, framing the court proceeding as a “Biden sideshow trial” before a corrupt and conflicted judge.

President Joe Biden also is returning to Michigan this month to be the keynote speaker for the NAACP Detroit Branch’s 69th annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner in Detroit on May 19.
