A look inside Michigan’s first 3D printed home located in Detroit

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Drive through Detroit’s Islandview neighborhood and you’ll come across a newly built home on Sheridan Street.

The 1,000-square-foot property isn’t just any new build.

“We are standing on the porch of the first 3D printed home in Michigan,” Evelyn Woodman told 7 Action News.

She’s the co-founder of the nonprofit Citizens Robotic, alongside her father Tom Woodman.

“We started working on this 3 1/2, 4 years ago. We saw they were 3D printing homes abroad,” Evelyn Woodman recalled.

By now, you may have seen 3D printers in action on a smaller scale. Evelyn Woodman said it’s the exact same concept.

She and her father figured Detroit has the technology and land to put it use on a larger scale and in industry experiencing a labor shortage.

“So, we got a used printer from the automotive industry and we assembled our small team of four people and started to learn how to print in our facility in Southwest Detroit,” she explained.

So, which parts of the two-bedroom home are 3D printed? Evelyn Woodman said the exterior of the home and the two curved walls inside are.

The material is mortar.

“It’s a very dense material. So, it extrudes like toothpaste. You can imagine the robot extruding beats of this stuff as it printing,” Fernando Bales, build lab manager for Citizens Robotic, explained.

“The 3D printing aspect of this significantly helps in making this house airtight.”

Bales said that’s energy efficiency. On top of that, he said the home is “net zero” ready, which means solar panels can be installed on the roof if the owner chooses to do so. He said that translates to cost savings on the energy bill.

Bales said the home’s layout is also suitable for someone with physical challenges.

As for costs, he said construction costs are comparable or maybe a little more than a traditional build at this point. However, he said the home is a better quality.

Evelyn Woodman said the home’s price will list for $224,500.

“So while we’re going to be trying this new thing, we encourage everybody who can maybe try to solve the affordable housing crisis, keep trying,” Evelyn Woodman said.

She said she anticipates the home will be complete before the end of the year.

Michigan House considering legislation that would curtail book bans

(CBS DETROIT) – A pair of bills in the Michigan House, introduced by Democrats, aim to make it more difficult to implement book bans in our state.

The bills would set requirements before books could be removed from shelves at community and district libraries but not school libraries.

“Depending on what they’re banning, I mean, if they’re banning pornography, I’m all for it, but if they’re banning our history, I’m against it,” said Doug Freeman, who was at the East Lansing Public Library on Tuesday with his granddaughter.

The bills, also called The Freedom to Read Act, would limit who can challenge library materials to community residents, require challenges to certify they have read or watched the material they want removed, require library directors to decide what is on the shelves and only allow libraries to approve removals if the material has been determined to be obscene by the United States or Michigan Constitution.

“In a way, it’s better to view it as more of a conversation between patron and library because we want to hear their voices, and a lot of times folks are just wanting to be heard and this is sometimes the way they feel most able to be heard,” said Chrissie Evaskis who works as a collection development librarian at the East Lansing Public Library.

Evaskis-Garrett says that while libraries like hers already use some of the requirements outlined in the bill package, she feels it’s a good idea to make them law.

“There’s this idea that we’re just willy-nilly out here purchasing whatever books strike our fancy, and we’re really not so kind of having those things codified, I think not necessarily protects us but the freedom of information in general,” said Evaskis-Garrett.

Freeman doesn’t want to see one person make decisions about which books go on the shelves. He says it’s important to think of his granddaughter.

“I want her to know the true history of our country,” he said.

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers announced Tuesday that they have reached a new TV broadcast deal.

The deal is with Diamond Sports Group and keeps the team on FanDuel Sports Network — previously Bally Sports Detroit — for all in-market games. That means FanDuel Sports Detroit will have all games that aren’t selected exclusively by national networks like ESPN, FOX, or Apple TV.

FanDuel Sports Detroit will also broadcast pre- and postgame shows for the Tigers. Fans can also watch games on the FanDuel Sports Network app by logging in with paid TV credentials or buying a subscription.

“We are excited to renew our longstanding partnership with the Tigers and to continue delivering broadcasts to passionate fans across Michigan,” Diamond CEO David Preschlack said. “Through comprehensive linear and digital offerings, our renewed partnership ensures that Tigers games reach fans across a variety of platforms, keeping them connected to the team they love.”

Detroit Red Wings ride PP to OT in San Jose, but fall, 5-4, on Macklin Celebrini score

Rookie sensation Macklin Celebrini scored his first career overtime goal and William Eklund tallied twice to lead the host San Jose Sharks to a 5-4 victory over the  Detroit Red Wings on Monday.

Tyler Toffoli and Luke Kunin also scored and Alexander Wennberg produced two assists for the Sharks, who snapped a three-game losing skid (0-1-2). Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 16 saves.

Dylan Larkin had a goal and an assist while Marco Kasper, Michael Rasmussen and Alex DeBrincat also scored for the Red Wings, who have only one victory in six games (1-3-2). DeBrincat’s goal came with 2:06 remaining in regulation, knotting the game at 4-all with the Red Wings’ second score in three power plays. Goalie Cam Talbot stopped 29 shots.

Celebrini, the first overall pick in this year’s draft, scored his first game-winning goal 46 seconds into overtime by lifting a shot as he headed across the crease. It was the rookie’s fourth goal of the campaign.

The Red Wings (7-9-2) saw three leads disappear and the Sharks (6-10-4) blew a third-period advantage in the back-and-forth affair.

Larkin opened the scoring 7:28 into the game by converting a wide-open chance coming after a Sharks turnover for his 11th of the season.

Eklund replied on the power play three minutes later when he pounced on a loose puck in the slot.

Kasper responded with a power-play marker when he buried a rebound with 72 seconds remaining in the first period for his second goal of the season.

Eklund tied the clash 2-2 at 5:59 of the second period with a long shot that Talbot mishandled with his glove to net his fourth of the season. Eklund has collected two goals and four assists in a four-game point streak.

Rasmussen put the Red Wings ahead a third time at 8:11 of the second period when he chipped the puck away from one Sharks player and it ricocheted off another San Jose defender and into the cage for his third goal this season.

Toffoli tied the clash again with another late-period goal, a perfect one-timer from the slot with 41.8 seconds remaining in the second for his ninth of the season.

Kunin gave the Sharks their first lead at 6:19 of the third period. He slipped behind a defender on the rush and upon gaining the puck in the slot snapped a top-corner shot for his third goal of the season.

DeBrincat forced overtime by converting the man advantage created by tripping call on Ty Dellandrea, netting his fourth goal of the season 1:20 into the power play.

The Wings wrapped up their four-game Pittsburgh/California road trip with three points — two against the Penguins last Wednesday and one Monday night. They return home for a stretch of five home games in six games, beginning Thursday with a visit from the New York Islanders.
