Larry Csonka recalls NE Ohio upbringing in fascinating new book, ‘Head On’
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Larry Csonka had many roads to soak up life. The one he normally took was fairly direct: Head down, discover the outlet, run by means of.
There have been different ones, although, together with the dust street he lived close to rising up in Stow.
“I grew up in between two, 300- or 400-acre dairy farms on just a little 18-acre patch of floor that we raised a few cattle on,” he stated. “The three-quarter mile lengthy dust street? Properly, second time I ever noticed a faculty bus I acquired on it. That tells you the way distant we have been rising up.”
He sat in the midst of the Csonka clan, with siblings a number of years older and youthful.
“It was very distant. Three-quarter mile dust street if you’re 4 years previous is like 20 miles, proper? So I grew up with critters round me, and the older youngsters went to high school and I used to be with mother all day. She had chores to are inclined to, and I might get lost within the woods with the canine.”
He was 4 months previous when his father moved the household to Stow from Akron. His father, raised by immigrant dad and mom from Hungary, had grown up on a farm in western Pennsylvania. He lived close to South Road in Akron, had labored at a movie show, and after World Warfare II acquired a job at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.
Csonka’s life was stuffed with its share of triumphs and arduous work, rooted in rising up on that Stow farm. He performed soccer at Syracuse and went on to change into a part of the famed undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins group. Csonka is out with an all-encompassing, fascinating memoir from his life in Northeast Ohio to Syracuse to Miami, to his love of the outside and far more. Developing with one phrase to outline Csonka can be simple: Adventurer.
However these roads. There have been at all times roads on his method to these adventures.
In school, he hitchhiked the 350 miles from Ohio to Syracuse.
“After I did that, I didn’t understand how chilly it acquired on Interstate 90 between Cleveland, Painesville and Syracuse, New York, and the way frigid you get standing there in February together with your thumb out,” he stated.
Csonka was so used to the trek he “developed a rapport as a result of I used to be going forwards and backwards a lot, definitely throughout the heavy a part of the winter, that the truck drivers who had routes up there began to acknowledge me. … I acquired to know a few of these guys, and I acquired to the place I by no means stood on the market greater than about 20 or half-hour earlier than one in every of them would come by and acknowledge me.”
The truckers have been common working people, he stated. They acquired a kick out of a child holding a cardboard signal promoting ‘frozen soccer participant’ or related plea. And the drivers rolling alongside to Cleveland, Buffalo or Erie, Pennsylvania, they’d somebody to speak to.
“After I did it about six or eight instances I acquired to the place I began to recollect who was delivering what on what day,” Csonka stated.
Csonka wouldn’t understand it then, however one of many cities he would cross – Painesville – would determine into his life. It was the hometown of Don Shula, who performed at John Carroll College.
Shula was a younger coach – youthful nonetheless when his Baltimore Colts have been shut out within the 1964 championship to the Cleveland Browns, 27-0. The younger coach and younger operating again didn’t see eye to eye, and so they let one another understand it.
To name Shula demanding is like saying Bobby Knight was a bit impatient. His exercises pushed gamers within the south Florida warmth, play after play, drill after drill, run after run.
“We didn’t have to do that in Cleveland,” Csonka quotes Paul Warfield, one other Ohioan who performed for Ohio State after which the Browns and Dolphins.
“Shula and I in all probability had one thing in widespread due to our childhood and rising up in northeastern Ohio,” Csonka stated. “Our appreciation for Euclid Seaside. And rising up in Ohio, which was an incredible place, notably in the event you like nature. He was just a little extra citified.”
Within the e book, Csonka’s perspective on Shula is a mature one – it took each some time to heat as much as the opposite. However after a couple of seasons, Csonka noticed by means of to the coach’s final aim: The means to an finish have been aggravating, however the finish recreation was ensuring each participant knew he was a part of a group.
As a lot of a group participant as Csonka was, there’s a solitary contentment that comes out – each in print and when he speaks – with the previous operating again, a bruiser who was good sufficient to search out holes and aggressive sufficient to make defenses pay after they discovered him.
“Head On” exhibits there’s extra to Csonka than soccer life. Not like Csonka’s operating fashion – grip ball, discover gap, bore by means of – the e book takes a special method. It’s frenetic, bouncing between totally different locations and eras. Nevertheless it’s all simple to learn and simple to observe.
Csonka actually can’t be pigeonholed. He’s a child who turned enamored with the outside after his mom gave him a Area & Stream journal with a canopy story on Alaska. He cherished the challenges of out of doors life, cherished successful on the sphere. He was content material with the solitary lifetime of distant Alaska, however loved tailgating after Dolphins video games with followers. And he had an incredible friendship with backfield mate Jim Kiick.
“Soccer was vital, school was vital. However I desperately wanted to spend someday every week fishing,” he writes.
Now, it’s household that retains him grounded. His visits to Alaska are right down to 4 to 6 weeks a yr after beforehand spending six or seven months yearly within the state.
“However I’ve acquired grandchildren and great-grandchildren now, and making an attempt to get all of them scattered between Massachusetts, Ohio and Florida to come back up is a little bit of an enterprise. So it’s simpler to get positioned in North Carolina, the place they’re all driving distance from right here.”
He likes to reap both moose meat or caribou, in addition to deliver again fish to “fill the freezer.”
“I’m a giant believer in wild-game consumption versus standard for well being causes, and for sporting causes, too. It offers me a motive to be on the market.”
Csonka splits time between North Carolina, Florida and a farm in Lisbon, Ohio, a village about 90 miles southeast of Cleveland. He nonetheless has household within the space. And it’s a superb wager he will likely be watching Sunday’s recreation, contemplating he follows the Browns, Dolphins and Giants.
He’ll watch the video games and, in fact, win-loss data when groups begin the season undefeated. He dispelled the rumor about Champagne toasts between ‘72 teammates when the final undefeated group lastly loses.
“Oh, you haven’t any thought,” he stated, laughing. “(Manny) Fernandez, (Dick) Anderson – there’s a couple of guys, we speak. In the event that they get previous 4-0, 5-0, we begin speaking and we begin to talk and the mantra begins. We’ll find yourself round a TV set and placing the hex on them.”
“I don’t learn about Champagne – we now have a couple of beers after we do it. A few of the guys had posed with Champagne glasses as a result of somebody misplaced and that acquired carried into the media that means, however consider me, the Miami Dolphins weren’t Champagne drinkers, they have been beer drinkers.”
The sport he watches is one which has advanced and altered tremendously from the grass fields he trudged throughout when he was taking part in. He watches with a vital eye, however shouldn’t be a screaming, bitter “again in my day!” sort. He acknowledges a passing recreation’s velocity may be extra harmful than a run-based method, when gamers will violently collide, however they aren’t getting up the identical head of velocity like a receiver downfield.
“The foundations have to alter as a result of the sport is altering,” he stated. “The ability blocking and ball management is giving method to rule modifications concerning the passing recreation that make the sport far more comprehensible and gratifying for the fan. And that’s what soccer has modified from – a recreation of participation for satisfaction to a recreation of showmanship for the followers. And that’s why it’s advanced towards the passing recreation.
“Whenever you’re a fan and also you take a look at the ability operating recreation, which occurs in lower than a second to a second and a half, you don’t perceive the intricacies of the timing that goes on between the individuals as a result of it’s only a large cluster from the place you’re sitting within the stands.”
Csonka is aware of what he’s speaking about. As he writes: “Energy operating was my bag. Secondary effort was my calling card.”
He will get again to his Ohio roots a few times a yr. Typically he hunts deer.
“I don’t exit and actively pursue the deer a lot anymore,” he stated. “I get a kick out of sitting in a deer stand with my brother. Typically we make it to the deer stand, generally we don’t even get out of the cabin. We simply smoke cigars on the porch, watch our sons and grandsons.”
That’s OK. Csonka has earned the best to get off the street and calm down.

Cleveland Guardians President Hints At More Coming Trades After Thomas Deal
The Cleveland Guardians made their first move of the 2024 MLB trade deadline with the acquisition of Washington Nationals outfielder Lane Thomas. It was a move that improved one of the main weaknesses that the team had.
While Thomas is a solid addition, the Guardians could still use some more help if they want to make a run at a championship this season.
Keeping that in mind, Chris Antonetti, the team’s President of Baseball Operations, has spoken out and hinted about more trades coming in the near future.
“We’re definitely not done pursuing things. Whether or not that leads to another deal or more deals, it’s really hard to forecast.”
Antonetti did honestly state that the trade market has been a tough one to navigate this year.
“It was one of the reasons we went out and signed Matt Boyd a couple of weeks ago because we were anticipating this was going to be a challenging market. That’s proven to be the case.”
Acquiring Thomas was a move to improve the offenses potential. Antonetti spoke out about what he expects the veteran outfielder to bring to Cleveland.
“We feel we’ve been able to do that by bringing Lane into the organization. He’s a versatile outfielder, a guy that’s capable of playing center field, right field and can contribute offensively, defensively and on the bases.”
In order to get Thomas, the Guardians had to give up a lot of value, something that Antonetti also spoke out to the press.
“We gave up a lot of value, but that’s what the market necessitated. We gave up three players that we think have a chance to go on and have bright futures and it’s painful to make deals like this, but this is one we felt we had to make.”
All of that being said, it doesn’t sound like Cleveland is done following their move to acquire Thomas.
More trades appear to be likely, assuming the Guardians can find a team that wants to deal as well. It will be interesting to see what Tuesday brings for Cleveland.
