Why is it so politically incorrect to decorate chimpanzees in costumes that American Greetings is dropping any playing cards that options photographs of the simian?

It was massive information when the previous Cuyahoga County jail director was sentenced to jail himself for mismanaging the jail. He completed his sentence way back, however now his conviction has been thrown out. Why?

Once we publish tales about sports activities playing, I hear from a handful of readers who’re offended. They assume playing is a vice. Is that the widely held opinion in Northeast Ohio?

We don’t consider Cuyahoga County as break up poll nation, however what did our evaluation of voting patterns for governor and senate present?

Chris Ronayne scored an enormous win simply two days after being elected Cuyahoga County government, naming a chief of workers who was fairly well-liked earlier than he left Better Cleveland 8 years in the past. Who’s he, and what has he been doing?

Folks within the Parma Metropolis College District merely refuse to approve new taxes, rejecting the most recent proposal final Tuesday. That leaves the district in a jam. How will the superintendent deal with that?

Let’s speak slush funds. What’s the newest spherical of spending by the Cuyahoga County Council with its terribly misguided transfer to squander $66 million in stimulus {dollars} on dozens of tiny porojects nobody will lengthy bear in mind?

Chris: [00:00:00] And we’re again from three days away, a uncommon time off on Friday, so now we have a lot to speak about on at the moment in Ohio. The information podcast. Dialogue from cleveland.com and The Plain Supplier. I’m Chris Quinn. I’m right here with Lisa Garvin, Ala Tasi, and Laura Johnson. We’re gonna begin with some election comply with up. I do know it’s per week previous, however persons are nonetheless speaking about it.

And on this subsequent query, my e mail field retains filling up with it. Following Tuesday’s elections is Gerry Mandra Dill as massive of an issue because it was for the previous 10 years. Lisa, the, the readers I’m listening to from refuse to just accept these numbers.

Lisa: Nicely in our story, and that is the, and now we have to crunch some numbers right here.

So gerrymandering was barely much less egregious on this final election than it has been. And it, you understand, realizing that we voted with unconstitutional maps, So within the November eighth election, now we have 5 Democratic congressional seats and 10 [00:01:00] Republicans going to the US Congress. In order that implies that the G O P has 67% of the Ohio Congressional seats.

So, Whenever you take a look at the common vote, For Republicans for statewide workplace that sits at 59%. In case you take a look at the common vote share of statewide congressional candidates, that’s 57%, in order that’s an eight to 10 level distinction between that and, and the precise seats that they maintain. That is the smallest hole.

In not less than 10 years. In case you look again on the 2010s, the G O P had 12 of 16 congressional seats, 75%, and the common vote of the statewide candidates, 56%, and the common vote share for congressional candidates was 56%. In order that was a 19% distinction. So we went from 19% hole to an eight to 10 level. However while you speak to Widespread Trigger, director Katherine Tesser, she says, Yeah, the gerrymander was not as [00:02:00] sturdy or excessive as anticipated, however they only went from an F grade to a D grade.

She stated that Dems did win aggressive races, however three of the seats had been susceptible to G O P pickup. Whereas no Republican seats had been susceptible to a Democratic problem. So, um, you understand, the map was deemed aggressive. Um, and the districts are stated to be stable for the Democrats, however, uh, I don’t know. I I, it nonetheless seems to be like a gerrymandered to me.

Chris: It, it was positively gerrymandered within the course of. However, however what’s fascinating is, is that the. Is shifting. An increasing number of persons are voting Republican, which implies that Gulf is shrinking. And you understand, persons are saying, nicely, they had been all incumbents, so in fact they voted for ‘em. You, you can also make any form of evaluation you need, however the numbers are the numbers.

Folks voted in massive numbers throughout this state for Republicans.

Lisa: Sure, they did. And many of the Republican, nicely, all the G O P incumbents besides one, you understand, they’ve the visibility [00:03:00] clearly as a result of they’re in workplace and so they additionally. Fundraising edge and draw extra donor {dollars}, however most of them received their races by about 20 factors.

However they did lose a Republican, I imply p Political Science professor from the College of Cincinnati. David Nivan says it’s a grand cosmic irony that the Republicans defended their gerrymandered maps solely to U lose. You realize, Congressman Steve Shabos seat to a.

Chris: The opposite downside, in fact, is the Democrats are usually not really feel fielding the perfect of candidates.

Uh, the Democratic get together is in form of disarray like by no means earlier than. And until they will get their act collectively, it’s simply not going to be a aggressive state. Nicely, and I believe at the moment in Ohio, Oh, go forward.

Lisa: No, I used to be simply gonna say, I believe when, you understand, after I sat via all of the endorsement, uh, interviews this final fall is that so most of the Democratic con candidates, nicely they’re working, you understand, they’d by no means run for workplace earlier than and so they’re attempting to be a senator or, you understand, or a lawmaker.

So we, there’s lots of inexperience within the pipeline there.

Chris: Certainly. [00:04:00] It’s at the moment in Ohio. Why is it so politically incorrect to decorate chimpanzees in costumes that American Greetings is dropping? Any playing cards that function photographs of the Simeon and Laura, you had been off on Thursday. I needed to go in and speak to our.

Writer President Brad Harmon, and he requested, What are you guys speaking about within the newsroom? And I stated, You realize, Brad, we simply had a dialog about whether or not it will be acceptable as an instance a narrative with an image of a chimp in a fancy dress, and it was form of hotly debated. That was the form of day it was that you simply missed.

Laura: Uh, I’m sorry I missed that dialog. Anytime we speak about animals within the newsroom, I really feel prefer it’s dialogue. Um, I’ve to say this was not on my radar in any respect as an issue as a result of nobody’s arguing that these chimpanzees on the playing cards had been mistreated. However Feta first introduced this up with American Greetings in 2008 and the.

Subject is that the pictures are demeaning as a result of they recommend the species is prospering, when in actual fact, chimpanzees are on the worldwide union of the conservation [00:05:00] of nature’s checklist of endangered species. That’s occurred since 1996. So when you’ve got photographs of them in human clothes, carrying get together hats, smiling or holding palms with human, individuals assume they’re doing nice, and it will increase the probability that folks would need them as a.

Chris: I, I, I gotta let you know, and this one, with all of the stuff we’ve been speaking about for the previous week, abortion and the pink wave, blue wave, all the large points going through America. This simply didn’t seem to be one which that ought to advantage this sort of a dialogue. Our former colleague Robin Go, is with PETA and she or he feels very strongly about it.

Was very proud that American Greetings. Determined to do that, and we finally determined on-line to not run a photograph of a chimpanzee in a fancy dress as a result of we figured we’d get hate mail if we did. However what are we coming to? We’ve talked about how we appear to be transferring too rapidly in America, in in, in embracing some unusual [00:06:00] concepts.

This appears like a kind of to me. I

Laura: truly. Even writing like my notes for this and I used to be like, can we are saying Chimp anymore? Or it’s like that too, you understand, Demeaning to the Chimp Fingers crew. Actually. , I used to be truly questioning that like, you understand, like, is it politically appropriate? However, um, now I I it hasn’t been this massive hubub these days about this.

They’ve been asking for this for years. I assume they rescued the, the chimpanzee who’s been on the playing cards. His title is Connor and. It’s normally the identical, similar chimpanzee and so they rescued him, however now they’re saying they’re pulling all the opposite playing cards of different chimpanzees and I assume now they’re gonna put some strain on Hallmark to cease, cuz Hallmark’s nonetheless bought these form

Chris: of playing cards.

When this, when this primary got here up. I, I didn’t know what the difficulty was. I’d by no means heard of this earlier than and I couldn’t consider we had been truly having a dialog about it. I used to be like, Okay. However for Halloween, which we simply handed, all people was posting footage of their canines and cats wearing [00:07:00] ridiculous costumes.

why is that? Okay, however not the chimpanzees, and it’s as a result of the chimpanzees are endangered. Proper. It’s simply no.

Laura: Yeah. My canine wore a donut, um, collar round his neck, like, you understand, he, he hated it. Um, however yeah, golden retrievers are usually not endangered . Can

Leila: I simply say the playing cards with a chimpanzee carrying an outfit? I imply, that’s the lamest type of humor anyway.

Yeah, I, Sure, that’s true. And is anybody gonna defend. Nonetheless want these playing cards on the market. No.

Chris: No. They had been dumb. They had been

Laura: actually dumb. They had been a canine card with a celebration hat. Proper? Like you possibly can promote much more canines and cats

Leila: carrying, After all. Yeah. Folks love that stuff. I, Each time you see a kind of, you go it proper by.

There’s so many different choices. Chimps and garments. Not humorous. It’s silly. It’s silly. . .

Chris: All proper, so all issues apart, that’s the explanation it is best to cease. It’s probably not humorous. It’s at the moment in. . It was massive information when the previous Cuyahoga County jail director was sentenced to jail [00:08:00] himself for mismanaging the Cuyahoga lockup.

He completed his sentence way back, however now his conviction has been thrown out. Lela, what’s up? Nicely, Ken

Leila: Mills served 9 months on the Portage County Jail for 2 counts, every of dereliction of responsibility and falsification. And such as you stated, he’s been outta jail for some time now. However a divided three choose panel.

Eighth Ohio District Courtroom of Appeals dominated that Mills deserves a brand new trial as a result of the choose at his authentic trial wrongly allowed the jury to listen to testimony that a number of inmates had died throughout or shortly after Mills’s time there. And the judges stated Mills was denied a good trial as a result of particular prosecutors with the Ohio Legal professional Basic’s workplace didn’t cost him with any crimes associated to the deaths.

Regardless of making that, you understand, form of a spotlight of their case and the judges. That thought. One of the vital egregious examples of this was when prosecutors introduced jurors a photograph of an inmate hunched over on the ground minutes earlier than he died. The panel felt [00:09:00] prosecutors used that photograph merely to inflame and improperly affect the jury.

One, one of many judges wrote in a dissent that she believed the proof was admissible as a result of Mills was charged with failing to supply ample shelter and medical care to inmates. So she felt the deaths had been. To creating that case. However the judges, you understand, they did all agree that there was ample proof to convict mills other than these deaths.

So he’ll get a brand new trial and prosecutors can, you understand, determine in the event that they’re gonna plan on attempting, attempting once more right here.

Chris: What’s the purpose of retrying him although? He’s already served a penalty. So that you’re simply going via it to set the

Leila: data. Nicely, don’t you? I assume, you understand, with one thing like this, wouldn’t you need the cost to stay?

I imply, you need the conviction to, to be upheld. You don’t, you don’t need him to stroll away from, from it. However he didn’t

Chris: stroll away. He spent 9 months in. I

Leila: know, but when he doesn’t have a conviction on his document, then that’s a, you understand, it’s actually a loss for the

Chris: state. [00:10:00] Oh, I don’t know. What’s the purpose of the justice system?

Is it to punish wrongdoers, which has occurred or is it to set the document straight? Nicely, I, I simply, I, look, everyone knows the jail was a multitude. We all know that he wasn’t a reliable jail supervisor. We’ve documented that. Adam Pice and Courtney Alfi did unbelievable work laying that each one out. The entire, the entire world is aware of He, he’s horrible.

And he did hand over 9 months of his life. So to undergo the expense of a trial on either side, simply to say, Nicely, the conviction sticks. It looks as if just a little little bit of, Nicely,

Leila: I additionally surprise the bureaucratic, the prosecutors tick one other chew at this apple, and so they don’t have these deaths to attract upon to form of give it that additional punch.

Are they fearful in any respect that, that he’s gonna be exonerated, ? You realize, in that case then it’s a, you understand, not less than. In the event that they stroll away from it, he can have, he’ll nonetheless stay on below the cloud of what occurred, you understand? However, you understand, if they fight it [00:11:00] once more and he will get, he will get acquitted as a result of they couldn’t use these deaths of their making their case, then, you understand, it’s.

A special final result.

Chris: Yeah, I don’t know. It’s uh, it’ll be fascinating to see what they do cuz he did his time. It’s, I assume if he will get convicted he may get an extended sentence and he may go do extra time. However we’ll see. It’s at the moment in Ohio after we publish tales about sports activities playing. I hear from a handful of readers who’re offended.

They assume playing is of a vice, even when it’s authorized. Is that the widely held opinion in northeast Ohio? Lisa?

Lisa: No, it isn’t. Based on the, uh, Baldwin Wallace College ballot that cleveland.com and the plain seller commissioned on quite a lot of subjects, they discovered that 61% had been in favor of authorized sports activities betting.

Solely 20% had been opposed, and solely 7% of them had been strongly towards it, and about 19% had been not sure. So should you check out the demographics, you’re extra more likely to assist playing should you’re a [00:12:00] republican. A person and also you make between 50,090 $9,000 a yr, and so they discovered within the age demographic, the assist was larger within the 18 to 49 demo, nevertheless it drops with every older demographic.

So the older you get, the much less probably you’re to assist playing. Um, additionally extra white people and black people assist it. 61.7% of white persons are opposed. Assist playing versus 57%, uh, of black people, and that’s a 4 level differe.

Chris: What, what strikes me, I cuz I get some fairly offended e mail about it as a result of the, the playing situation is altering the language of sports activities reporting.

There are much more tales now that take a look at the percentages and the purpose spreads. They had been at all times there, however, nevertheless it’s way more part of the dialogue that had been research accomplished in Australia after they did sports activities playing about how the entire narration of in recreation sports activities protection modified and that’s taking place.

It’s a, it. It’s a reasonably dramatic [00:13:00] shift in the best way you analyze it. Will Nick Chubb rush for 100 yards or not? It’s now not profitable or dropping or only a level unfold, however I, However there are some readers that don’t need that. They don’t like change, in order that’s one factor, however they only don’t assume that we should always talk about playing as a result of it’s so evil.

However it’s authorized. It’s not unlawful anymore beginning in January. So we shall be utilizing that language.

Lisa: Proper. And assist for it. I imply, virtually each demographic they talked to, the assist was over 50% and nicely over in lots of instances. Yeah, I’m,

Leila: I’m shocked to listen to that, that Republicans, so, uh, you understand, that they, that they’re extra more likely to assist playing as a result of these form of, don’t, they see themselves because the morality police.

Lisa: I imply, you understand, that’s fascinating that you simply say that, Layla, as a result of in Texas, which is solidly conservative, they by no means may go on line casino playing. And so they tried like 3 times. Wow. And it by no means occurred. In order that form of surprises me.

Chris: Yeah. Nicely, yeah, that’s true. Layla, I, I [00:14:00] imply, I understand how we bought it handed as a result of the Republicans had been afraid that it will be a constitutional modification, so that they moved it via.

It’s additionally profitable. I imply, the state does get some cash out of it, however for normal, Republican voters. It’s fascinating that they’re in favor of it. Perhaps it’s simply grow to be so accepted typically, cuz it’s in every single place. It’s at the moment in. We don’t consider Cuyahoga County as a break up poll nation, however what did our evaluation of voting patterns for governor and Senate present?

Laura? Another

Laura: election story. Proper. And Zachary Smith did a pleasant job analyzing who was voting the place. And as much as a few fifth, truly greater than a fifth, 22% of the county precincts, broke get together strains when voting in races for the governor and US Senate. So that they selected candidates from opposing events, and that’s a political grey space.

Most of those are. Mike DeWine is governor and, uh, Tim Ryan is Senator. So, and so they’re largely within the far east aspect of the county, within the southwestern suburbs. After which there have been six [00:15:00] precincts, lower than 1% of the county that swung the opposite approach voted for Nan Waley and JD Vance. Uh, 66% of the precincts, uh, throughout the county, voted for each Democrats and 10% voted for each Republicans.

Chris: The, the map that we printed with this story actually was the visible help of visible aids. You by no means consider Kaga County as having that a lot pink in it.

Laura: Nicely, and I imply, give it some thought, it, it’s, nicely, yeah, 10% of the county and, however we’ve seen this within the final couple years. Strongsville Tremendous Pink Parma, which was once a totally democratic stronghold, has some pink in it, Seven Hills North, Royalton, Brookville.

I imply, the additional south you get, uh, the little bit extra rural you’re getting, clearly it’s not, it’s very suburban, however you’re getting extra pink. I used to be actually shocked to see that my space of Rocky River. Is simply as blue as, you understand, South Euclid in Cleveland Heights, though there may be like a few pink precincts, proper?

Perhaps in, uh, College Heights. I used to be shocked by that. [00:16:00]

Chris: Yeah, I, I recommend individuals look on cleveland.com to see the map as a result of we will speak about all of it we wish, however generally a picture is value hundreds phrases and

Leila: it’s, it was actually fascinating to see how many individuals voted for DeWine and towards JD Vance.

And I want that pattern had simply carried via the state.

Laura: Nicely then that was why we had talked about that beforehand, proper? Andrew Tobias wrote a narrative about how Ryan was aiming to select up these votes and he actually wanted to do it to, to win, and he did it in Cuyahoga, however not by sufficiently big margins to override the remainder of the

Chris: state.

That’s as a result of turnout in Cuyahoga was fairly unhealthy general, proper? I imply, that’s a part of the issue is the Democrats now not get out the vote. Folks don’t really feel like they’re invested within the system, so that they keep residence. It’s at the moment in Ohio. Chris Roan scored an enormous win simply two days after being elected.

Cuyahoga County government naming a chief of workers who was fairly well-liked earlier than he left Better Cleveland eight years in the past. Lelo, who’s he and [00:17:00] what has he been

Leila: doing? I agree that this was get for Roan final week. Uh, he named Eric Wiler to his transition crew and, and as his future chief of workers.

And till then, Wiler had been the town supervisor of Sandusky, which is his hometown. He’s been there since 20. Earlier than that he had been the director of Ohio Metropolis, Inc. Since 2009. That’s the neighborhood improvement company within the Ohio Metropolis neighborhood, and he as soon as served because the supervisor of the Metropolis of Cleveland’s Workplace of Capital Budgeting.

Eric presided over Ohio Metropolis, Inc. In the course of the years when, when Ohio Metropolis actually blossomed into what it’s at the moment, so stuffed with eating places and nightlife and sights. He helped carry Mitchell’s ice cream to that shuttered storefront that after housed Moda. Keep in mind Moda that terrible nightclub? And he knew the way to leverage neighborhood anchors just like the West aspect market to draw different companies.

And he, he took that sensibility with him to Sandusky. So all through the previous eight years, you understand, I simply couldn’t let you know what number of occasions I’ve heard individuals say they wished that Eric Wiler would come again to [00:18:00] Cleveland for, for a second when former metropolis Councilman Joe SimMan was stepping down from council to grow to be the director of World Cleveland.

There was some chatter that Eric. Come again to the town to be appointed to that council seat. However he was adamant at the moment that he was dedicated to Sandusky. That’s his hometown. So I had at all times felt like that’s the place his coronary heart was. And, uh, you understand, didn’t, I used to be actually pleasantly shocked to see that he was, he was named to this place.

Chris: He’s been on hearth. I imply he, you understand, you need someone that cares about lakefront improvement. He moved metropolis corridor off the lakefront in order that they might develop it. I imply, take into consideration that. You realize what, how, what number of mayors are gonna say, Yeah, yeah, yeah. What a waste the area, like an airport. Perhaps let’s get it off the lakefront and do some cool issues with it.

That city in his eight years has been reworked. I imply, he has been a surprise form, and also you’re proper. What number of occasions have we heard. When’s he coming again? He spoke on the metropolis membership a couple of years again, I believe. And also you had, you heard that, When is he coming [00:19:00] again for Chris Roan to snag him and produce him again?

That’s massive,

Leila: massive, you understand, wanting round on-line. I noticed the story that stated that in 2020, it appears he was a finalist for the job of metropolis administrator in, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has ties there. He’s, he received, you understand, he went to College of Michigan for legislation college. He. Yeah, . Um, however he ended up withdrawing his title from consideration there and determined to remain in Sandusky as a substitute and, and assist his hometown climate the storm in the course of the pandemic.

You realize, in fact that city, you understand, they suffered so tremendously from the sudden lack of tourism {dollars} and the truth that Cedar Level was closed for half of that season and he informed Ann Arbor. It was an honor to be a finalist, however it will take a close to excellent scenario for me to contemplate leaving Sandusky, so this should be that excellent scenario.

Chris: I discover it fascinating that he gave discover a few month in the past, nicely earlier than Christopher Na received the election. I believe he may need been assured. [00:20:00]

Laura: I bought to satisfy with him after I was doing Rock the Lake and spent a day going round downtown Sandusky. We truly threw axes collectively at their act, throwing bar and checked out all the event they had been doing within the new Sea Corridor they had been constructing, and I used to be tremendous impressed with every thing he’s been capable of accomplish in Sandusky, and he’s capable of carry that form of ardour and simply effectivity.

To Cuyahoga County, then we’re in for break and he actually has

Leila: a, a public service spirit. You realize, I used to be studying that in mm-hmm. Laborious occasions in Sandusky. He voluntarily gave again, you understand, a part of his wage, uh, to, to assist the funds and, you understand, when do you hear of that taking place? ? As a substitute we’ve heard of, we’ve heard of metropolis council members in some cities voting to present themselves raises after they bought with Harpa cash.

Cash .

Chris: So , geez. Okay. Yeah, it’s a giant get. Let’s see what else Chris Roan does. He’s off to begin. It’s at the moment in Ohio. Folks within the Parma Metropolis College district [00:21:00] merely refuse to approve new taxes. Rejecting the most recent proposal final Tuesday that leaves the. Within the jam, Lisa, how will the superintendent deal with

Lisa: it?

Nicely, there’s lots of issues that aren’t going to occur and uh, Superintendent Charles Meek says he’s unsure that we received’t go earlier than voters once more. So, situation 9 was on the poll in parm was a 3.95 mil bond situation for Parma faculties. It failed for the third time in three years out of 36,359. Votes solid 52.4% opposed the bond situation.

He stated, you understand, smile. He thought we had , robust marketing campaign, however they didn’t change sufficient minds. This, uh, levy would’ve value $11 and 53 cents a month for a $100,000 residence. So what occurs is instant, they won’t be constructing the brand new 194 million highschool that might’ve served your entire college district.

They may even lose. 79 million in matching funds from the Ohio Services [00:22:00] Development Fee. And he stated that their consolidation of the district will proceed. There may be planning underway to shut and demolish Parma Excessive College and Redwood Elementary. Parma Park Elementary will grow to be the brand new central workplace location and the situation for the Parma Academy of Gifted Enrichment.

And that’s coming quickly, he says, However we might have to come back again to voters, you understand, if we want a brand new highschool. The working revenues that they bought from. Levy in 2011 is working out, so that they’re, you understand, he’s unsure what his subsequent steps shall be.

Chris: The concept you simply maintain coming again and coming again simply rubs me the flawed approach.

You should have a moratorium if voters go to the polls and say, No, shouldn’t you get a yr earlier than you need to deal with it once more? I, I simply, the need of the voters ought to matter. But when they only maintain coming again and again, and sometimes they’ll attempt to do it in a particular election when there’s low turnout or one thing to.

To prepare dinner the books a bit, it’s simply if the voters don’t wanna have the tax. You realize, you gotta [00:23:00] determine it out.

Lisa: However then will they begin bitching that there’s no highschool? I imply, you understand.

Chris: Yeah. However, however that, Look, the voters are those that determine how a lot cash the federal government ought to have. The voters are the federal government.

They management it. And so if the voters say, No extra taxes, we, we wish you to do it inside a funds, then you definately gotta work throughout the funds. Think about if the county council be taught to work inside its funds, you understand, it’s, it’s an fascinating train, however to, to repeatedly come again. It’s simply, I don’t know, simply you hear individuals speak about it and so they simply really feel like, It’s not proper.

It look, it’s additionally partly cuz of Ohio’s legislation the place the taxes don’t rise with inflation. That’s a uncommon factor. Ohio has that cap in order that as quickly as you go the tax, the worth of it begins dropping as a result of you may by no means gather an additional greenback from it. Then while you go it, It’s at the moment in Ohio. What speak Slush funds, What’s the newest spherical of spending by the Cuyahoga County Council with its terribly [00:24:00] misguided transfer to squander 66 million in stimulus funds on dozens of tiny tasks that nobody will.

How do you actually really feel

Leila: Chris ? Yeah, nicely this week, uh, we noticed county council go one other 2.6 million in, in proposed spending. Greater than half of it, about 1.5 million shall be used to demolish the Brook Park Memorial Elementary College and exchange it with a retention pond, you understand, as a result of, Whenever you consider all of the transformational makes use of of this sort of as soon as in a lifetime cash, you assume retention pond, proper?

Lisa: However what else? I imply,

Chris: Dale Miller, Mosquito breeding grounds Mosquito

Leila: farm, The Brook Park Mosquito farm. Proper? However, uh, so Dale Miller and Ann Baker in districts one and two, they’re gonna pull. 89,000 to present to the West Shore Council of Governments to purchase tools for the West Shore Technical Response Group.

They reply to fires and specialised rescue operations. Dale Miller can also be gonna give [00:25:00] 750 grand so as to add a path from Cam’s Corners Neighborhood to Rocky River Reservation. He’s gonna give 100 grand for a meals program for seniors. There’s cash, uh, for Lakewood to provide a feasibility examine on eco-friendly public transit.

That sounds form of fascinating. 43,000 for the Journey Middle for Security and Therapeutic for renovations at a home violence shelter. After which Sonny Simon in District 11 is giving 50 grand to the Bail Mission Included to rent an worker to establish individuals in want of bail help and, and assist them.

That’s the brand new checklist. Thank

Chris: you. Yeah, simply assume 66 million. In case you’d been very artistic and revolutionary, what number of lives may you have got truly modified? You realize, we talked at one level, What should you created a nurse coaching program? As a result of now we have this horrible scarcity of nurses the place you’re taking candidates, you place ‘em via college, you pay for his or her childcare, you be certain they’ve meals in shelter, and for no matter it’s, the yr and a half it takes to get skilled.

[00:26:00] Every part’s lined, and then you definately change their lives and so they thrive and their households thrive. How many individuals may you have got accomplished that with? And as a substitute we’re doing all this nickel and dime stuff that nobody’s gonna bear in mind it.

Leila: It’s, And the following, the following spherical will most likely embrace like 50 grand for mosquito management in Brook Park, ,

Chris: West Nile virus.

Proper. Testing in Brook Park. It’s at the moment in. There was a time when the reply to this query was a tough no, however now not it seems. Do you have to purchase journey insurance coverage when planning a trip? Laura,

Laura: the specialists are saying sure, and most vacationers agree at this level. Greater than half, and it relies upon who you’re asking, however as much as 95% of some journey brokers shoppers are getting journey insurance coverage.

I’ve to say, I’ve by no means paid for this. Then once more, my holidays. Actually modest in comparison with the individuals speaking on this story. I’ve by no means, you understand, been to Belize and needed to wait out a hurricane. And that’s the form of stuff that persons are, are fearful about, proper? It’s not simply Covid, however [00:27:00] that’s the explanation that so many individuals are selecting to get it now, is as a result of they’ve seen what can occur to their holidays when the sudden happen.

Chris: I, I used to be shocked that the recommendation was typically that, and it wasn’t simply recommendation from individuals who become profitable by promoting you insurance coverage. It was from those that have seen holidays dissolve away and other people lose fairly a bit of money due to it. However what a dramatic turnaround as a result of

Leila: of the code. Can I say, I’ve checked out these insurance coverage insurance policies each single time we’ve deliberate any form of journey, and so they all really feel like, I imply, they, I’m fairly positive they are saying that the, the coverage will kick in if the place the place you’re must be evacuated.

Which is a fairly excessive bar. I imply, you need to be actually within the eye of the storm should you,

Laura: I believe there’s lots of completely different ones you can get right here, and Susan Glaser lays it out very well. I imply, you’re gonna pay extra for the cancel for something form of factor. In case you’re like, Eh, I’m simply not feeling my journey anymore.

I wanna cancel. You may get insurance coverage for that and get your [00:28:00] a reimbursement. You realize, there are those that get. After they’re on trip, moderately if it’s from Covid or one thing else. Individuals who needed to quarantine their insurance coverage was protecting additional days, keep at their accommodations. Any individual apparently tripped and broke an ankle whereas they had been quarantined and so they bought that paid for.

So I believe you need to be actually cautious about what you’re paying for and studying the tremendous print, as a result of yeah, it could possibly be a terrorist assault, it could possibly be a storm. You realize, it may simply be unhealthy climate that cancels your flight, I don’t know. However you do want to have a look at what you’re paying for. And the extra it covers, clearly the costlier it’s going to be, nevertheless it’s a fraction of the price of the overall.

They are saying 4 to eight% of the overall journey value. And in case you are planning like a giant journey, you understand, bounce via Europe in a bunch of various international locations, it makes a complete lot extra sense than if I’m like, I’m gonna drive someplace and keep in a lodge that’s completely canceled .

Chris: Yeah. I, I do discover although, that there are occasions the place you see our readers writing letters about how they’d a tough time getting [00:29:00] reimbursed.

Mm-hmm. , I believe there’s one thing to what Layla’s saying about, you really want to have a look at the, at what you’re lined for. Like when you’ve got a, a demise within the household and have to come back again for a funeral, does that rely? Issues like that. However it’s story by Susan Glazer. Test it out on cleveland.com.

That’s it for Monday on at the moment in Ohio. Thanks, Lisa. Thanks Laura. Thanks Layla. And thanks for listening.
