Chris: [00:00:00] The primary Information day of the New 12 months turned out to be an enormous one, each nationally and in Ohio. It’s what we’re speaking about on as we speak in Ohio. The information podcast. Dialogue from cleveland.com and The Plain Vendor. I’m Chris g Quinny. I’m right here with Laura Johnston, Lisa Garvin, and Leila Tassi. We obtained some great things to speak about.

Let’s. To it. The rumblings turned a real shock. Tuesday. Because the early alternative for Ohio Home speaker misplaced to a man who constructed a coalition of Republican and Democratic votes like Householder did. 4 years in the past. The brand new speaker ranked excessive in our annual Sleepy Awards as nicest lawmaker. But in addition because the lobbyist pal.

Lisa: Who’s he? Lisa. His identify is Jason Stevens. He’s the Republican from Lawrence County. He was elected 54 to 43 because the Ohio Home speaker with a coalition of Democrats and, and, uh, Republicans. All 32 Democrats in the home voted for him, and 22 [00:01:00] Republicans did as effectively. This was an upset as a result of we reported yesterday, apparently erroneously that Derek Maron from Toledo was going to be.

Beaker. He obtained all of his 43 votes had been from Republicans. He was chosen in November throughout a closed door caucus vote, and there was a 3rd candidate that dropped out and gave his votes to Maron. So I assume that’s why they thought he had the within monitor. However you understand, the fear is, you understand, with Maron is that he may transfer.

An already right-leaning home additional to the precise. However Jason Stevens, after all, you understand the home speaker may be very highly effective. They get to determine which payments get voted on and which dying committee or transfer via committee. He can servee although till his 2029 time period limits, you understand, so he’s termin restricted in 2029, so he would’ve been home speaker longer than Marin.

Home minority chief Alison Russo, the Democrat from Columbus says they determined to assist Stephen’s solely two hours earlier than the vote was forged. Uh, they mentioned there was no grand deal [00:02:00] made, however there was a variety of discuss and dialogue in areas of disagreement and settlement.

Chris: Uh, it feels like all people likes him.

I imply, that’s why he was voted, uh, no matter Third most pleasant I, I do fear concerning the shades of Larry Householder. Larry Householder put collectively a coalition of Democrats and Republicans to take the speakership away. He was additionally very near lobbyists, particularly with First Power, and it’s worrisome that this.

Within the voting, which is completed by legislators and other people acquainted on the State Home was recognized as anyone who’s actually near lobbyists, we’re gonna should do some homework to determine, you understand, which of them through which industries. However he’s additionally being known as a reasonable. So is is, is {that a} good signal that perhaps after they begin speaking about abortion, In the home.

It received’t be on the ridiculous fringe of it that they’ll be on the lookout for an answer that Ohio may embrace.

Lisa: It’ll be attention-grabbing to see, and we, I don’t know [00:03:00] a lot about him. I’m certain you guys have, you understand, a file on this man, however I’m certain we’ll be digging into his previous votes and, and that type of factor.

So I’m simply gonna take the good thing about the doubt proper now. He feels like a more sensible choice than Marin would’ve been simply based mostly on ideology alone.

Chris: Yeah, the I, though the Democrats, I feel vastly regretted what they did with householder, and I noticed some chatter yesterday from folks saying, don’t you keep in mind what occurred the final time you probably did this?

Uh, I, I feel it’s inter, we had been all type of stunned at Maron, proper? As a result of he’s. Younger man, newcomer stride in as hell. Um, and I’m wondering if folks simply obtained extra afraid of that type of stride sea within the State Home and wished to go together with anyone who’s extra congenial.

Crickets. No, no congeniality within the State Home. . Uh, it was a, it was an enchanting flip of occasions that was within the shadows. What occurred nationally? You’re [00:04:00] listening to as we speak in Ohio, the Vote for You Home. Home speaker featured some huge time turnabout, and a distinguished Ohioan performed a distinguished function. How did Congressman Jim.

Determine into the machinations. Layla,

Leila: Jim Jordan. On Tuesday, he, he stood earlier than his colleagues in Congress and delivered this speech to assist Kevin McCarthy from California as the home speaker. However then moments later, Congress, Congressman Matt Kates from Florida will get up and says, wait a minute. Possibly Jordan is the very best particular person for the job, and he known as him probably the most gifted, hardest working member of the Republican convention and principally mentioned, you understand who, however Jordan has the heart to face as much as lobbyists in particular pursuits.

So the following factor you understand, a small handful of his colleagues are voting for Jordan, and that’s sufficient to. Disrupt Kevin McCarthy’s path to victory. He wanted 218 votes to win the speakership. So the Republican majority break up its votes between McCarthy. He obtained 203 votes. Arizona’s, Andy Bigs obtained [00:05:00] 10, Jordan obtained six with, after which single votes for Indiana’s health club banks and, and former New York.

Consultant Lee Zelda, um, and, and Florida’s Byron Donalds. So it ought to be famous that, you understand, the entire Ohio Republicans backed McCarthy, uh, together with Jordan and the entire Democrats supported Hakeem Jeffries from New York. He obtained 212 votes, however the magic quantity right here is 2 18. So all of that chaos simply type of continued via a number of rounds of voting Tuesday with Jordan.

Truly getting extra votes with every, every, every time. And he’s siphoning them from McCarthy. So that they known as it a day yesterday. They’re gonna reconvene as we speak, I consider, at midday after the Republicans get their act collectively. However apparently that is, you understand, the primary time the home has gone to a number of ballots to elect a speaker in 100 years with this group of extremely conservatives, stymieing, McCarthy’s, mattress, and, they usually can’t do the rest till they select a speaker.

The whole lot’s grinding to halt proper now.

Chris: Yeah, we’re, we’re [00:06:00] seeing historical past be made. I imply, there are individuals who have been born and died. This has by no means occurred and it, I had learn an evaluation early within the day that speculated that Jordan could be proposed and, however, however with no thought that he might win. He can’t get the votes, nevertheless it was to more and more present the weak point of McCarthy.

Resulting in finally one other alternative. What I feel we’ve a, a uncommon second if, if we had one respectable chief within the middle in Washington, this is able to be an opportunity for reasonable Republicans like Dave Joyce to achieve out to reasonable Democrats and say, look. Let’s decide anyone collectively. It must be Republican cuz they’ve the the votes or anyone that’s not in Congress, which is allowed and get the French folks out of the dialog.

We are able to get some stuff completed. Let’s present America. We all know work collectively. Let’s unite behind anyone. Let’s create our centrist agenda and work with the president within the very shut Senate to get it completed. That is the second you don’t, [00:07:00] we received’t have one other second like this in all probability for an extended, very long time, nevertheless it.

Reaching out and what you bought yesterday was the Democrats reveling within the dysfunction of the Republicans, which is a disgrace. Yeah, and

Leila: I, I, I agree. These extremely conservatives, I feel, are pushing others towards the middle. The one method to get previous that is, is to achieve throughout the aisle and provide you with an answer.

Chris: Effectively, it’s a Dave Joyce second, proper? Dave Joyce is seen as reasonable, despite the fact that he votes fairly far to the precise and, and he participates in bipartisan conversations. So do it Dave Joyce. Go attain out to the folks you take care of on the Democratic facet and and counsel anyone get it going. There’s not gonna be one other second.

Yeah, and assume what you can do in the event you had Republicans and Democrats working collectively. God forbid. When’s the final time that occurred, Lisa? It was in all probability pre-Invoice Clinton.

Lisa: Effectively, proper.

Chris: All proper. It’s, uh, it’s, they get [00:08:00] again collectively to vote at midday as we speak, proper? I feel so, yeah. So we’ll have extra drama out of the, out of Washington as we speak.

Whe again in 1923, Lela, I feel it went weeks proper? Or longer.

Leila: I don’t know although. I don’t know really. What’s the story behind that? Do

Chris: you understand? I, I feel it went a very long time. It was not one thing that they resolved in a few days. You’re listening to as we speak in Ohio. Talking of Larry Householder, whose trial begins in simply weeks, we had one other revelation about first vitality’s unlawful and misleading practices.

Tuesday and Laura, it got here with one other massive high-quality. What’s the story?

Laura: Yeah, yeah, a big high-quality, however in all probability isn’t that giant to First Power, 3.9 million as a result of First Power did not disclose almost 94 million in lobbying and assist of laws. Now on the middle of the Home, invoice six scandal, so this was a.

This got here out of a consent settlement signed final Friday. The Federal Power Regulatory Fee mentioned, first Power in 2019 and [00:09:00] 2020 withheld this data from it about lobbying funds relating to HB six thousands and thousands of {dollars} in funds to Householder. And Sam Randazzo, the previous chairman of the Public Utility Fee of Ohio, who has not been charged and.

Maintains that he did nothing improper. So keep in mind, WHE after Householder was arrested, 4 different folks, 4 allies first, vitality offered regulators with details about its lobbying efforts, and people data say it spent almost seven 94 million pushing for the invoice that was together with 71 million to five 0 1 nonprofits.

These are those that get the darkish cash. 22.8 million to Renzo. So, yeah, I, you, you gotta surprise, we’re getting this revelation now, two and a half years after this broke. What else we’re gonna discover out within the trial? Effectively,

Chris: I, that is simply additional proof in my thoughts that first vitality felt it might do something it wished as a result of it had the home speaker in its pocket.

They, they didn’t should observe [00:10:00] any guidelines. They didn’t should disclose something that’s required, they usually simply had the worst potential habits you can think about. And I feel we’re gonna study extra. It because the trial goes on, Jake Zuckerman’s gonna cowl that factor, gavel to gavel, and I’m anticipating there’ll be revelations on a reasonably common foundation about what the hell was occurring in Ohio Authorities.

It will get again to the brand new alternative of how speaker, if he’s actually the pal of the lobbyist, that ought to be a priority.

Laura: Yeah, that does increase a pink flag. I imply, first vitality earned greater than 11 billion in income in 2021. That is years after, you understand, uh, home Invoice six. And keep in mind, they entered right into a deferred prosecution settlement with the US Division of Justice.

They admitted to paying almost $60 million to a nonprofit secretly managed by householder, however I imply, they weren’t even fessing up then dealing with legal expenses to the complete

Chris: quantity. Yeah. A, a really scummy scenario with them. It’d be attention-grabbing to [00:11:00] see who from First Power is named to testify within the Householder trial, on condition that the utility has pleaded responsible to paying bribes to him.

It’s, that’s

Laura: a very good query as a result of these folks thus far haven’t been charged.

Chris: Okay. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has a collection of payments awaiting his signature, together with the ridiculous transfer to declare pure fuel, inexperienced vitality. He pulled out his pen for the simple work Tuesday. Lisa, what did he signal into? Legislation

Lisa: Senate Invoice 2 88. A 1000 web page. Laws that was signed into regulation yesterday by Governor DeWine.

It, uh, it had overwhelming assist within the legislature. It’s one of many largest legal code modifications in many years. Uh, DeWine, as he signed yesterday, mentioned, Ohio could not agree with each a part of the invoice, however all people’s opinions had been heard. So a few of the spotlight. Of this invoice, it reduces the utmost punishment for underage [00:12:00] consuming from six months and a thousand {dollars} high-quality to 60 days and a $500 high-quality.

Um, uh, it requires a minimal 5 12 months sentence for a vehicular murder that includes fireplace or EMS personnel. This, after all, stems from the November dying of Cleveland Fireman, Johnny Terick, who was killed whereas directing site visitors on I 90 round an accident. It decriminalizes. Take a look at strips which might be at the moment listed as drug paraphernalia, and you will get 30 days in jail for that.

Additionally, you possibly can, in the event you had been convicted of possessing marijuana paraphernalia that may be expunged out of your legal document and it’s re faraway from the record of disqualifying offenses for jobs in sure industries. Um, one which was type of troublesome to. Um, it creates a tenth modification middle within the Lawyer Common’s workplace to watch federal government orders for abuse and overreach.

Chris: Yeah, that was the, the . That’s as a result of Dave [00:13:00] Yos retains intervening in different states’ affairs and different lawsuits, and he desires to have , an official imprimatur about it. It was fairly clear Mike DeWine was gonna signal this invoice. This isn’t one which anyone had instructed he wouldn’t. Um, and it goes together with a secondary type of regulation enforcement invoice having to do with texting and driving.

Which is able to now be a extra severe offense.

Lisa: That’s right. Uh, earlier than you can not be pulled over for a major offense of distracted driving. You already know, they may solely ticket you in the event you had been pulled over for one thing else, so now they will really pull you over for that as a major offense. Um, there are particular exceptions, like in the event you’re making an emergency name or you understand, public security officers making a piece name in the event you’re stopped or pulled over or at a pink mild in the event you’re on the speaker cellphone, so long as you’re not holding the cellphone.

So, there are a number of exceptions to this, however yeah, you higher watch out in the event you’re gonna be holding your cellphone up so everybody can see it, cuz [00:14:00] now you can get pulled over for.

Chris: It’ll be attention-grabbing to see what occurs with a few of these different payments. There have been some requests that he pull out the veto pen.

We’ll see if he does. He doesn’t do it typically. It’s as we speak in Ohio. DeWine was busy Tuesday. He additionally fired a shot throughout the bow with the sports activities playing firms which might be blitzing Ohio with ads. Sports activities playing turned authorized on Sunday. Layla, what’s he warning the corporate’s about? So these

Leila: feedback got here throughout a dialog with reporters.

This week, governor DeWine spoke out in opposition to the, the playing firms that seem like towing the road with their promoting. They’re not purported to be sending ads to underage clients or, or promoting your school campuses. He pointed to the $350,000 high-quality that the Ohio On line casino Management Fee desires to carry in opposition to DraftKings for mailing.

You already know, 1000’s of ads to folks below the age of 21 Bar Stool. Sportsbook additionally was issued a discover of violation earlier in December due to some occasion [00:15:00] that they held on the College of Toledo’s campus. So DeWine then took subject with the corporate’s promotions, providing free bedding credit.

He says that these provides are very deceptive. And aren’t what they seem like. You need to learn the high-quality print to comprehend that, and DeWine mentioned he desires playing firms to, to heed his warning that that breaking the foundations isn’t gonna be tolerated in Ohio, and that he personally is making certain that the On line casino management fee is on prime of

Lisa: this.

Chris: Yeah, I want he would’ve provided some examples of what he thought was improper. Yeah. As a result of I’ve not seen adverts from the playing firms that I assumed had been misleading. I, you understand, I’m not below 21, so I can’t communicate to getting adverts for folks below 21, however the, however what I’ve seen looks as if what you see in different states, and it’s the mad sprint to get these first time betters.

Uh, and he didn’t supply any examples. Proper, proper.

Leila: Yeah. He. Reporters pressed him for that as a result of he did say, you understand, we’ve seen this occur a number of instances already. And so they had been like, effectively, like for instance, [00:16:00] what? And he wouldn’t say, so I don’t know if he was simply type of hyperbolizing, a little bit bit, however, um, yeah, he, he simply pointed to the DraftKings case, as you understand, instance primary.

Chris: and look, it’s a good suggestion to, to let all people know we’re, we’re gonna observe the regulation and we’re watching you, and also you higher observe the regulation. He signed the invoice so he’s not in opposition to proper. Sports activities playing. He, he might have vetoed the invoice if he had been, however, however the truth that they’re telling all people, and from what you possibly can see, the sports activities playing c.

Or paying consideration. Yeah, there’s a number of disclaimers and that is the

Leila: time to come back out sturdy although and be sure that they perceive that the cons On line casino Management Fee is, goes to be watching. I imply, I feel that, you understand, it’s, it’s in all probability applicable for ‘em to simply ship the message and in any other case, you understand, you may lose management.

So.

Chris: Effectively, I, and I’m wondering too about playing dependancy. It that, I’m wondering if the governor is fearful that every one kinds of persons are being [00:17:00] induced to gamble for the primary time, who may not know that they’ve a playing dependancy potential, and that all of the sudden we’re gonna see an enormous enhance in these type of circumstances the place folks.

Their lives. I, I don’t know if there have been research completed in states the place sports activities playing has been legalized. Uh, has there been an enormous enhance in playing dependancy circumstances, however we’ll should see. Mm-hmm. , it’s as we speak in Ohio. Yet one more concerning the governor reporter Jeremy Pelzer put collectively a bit wanting on the legacy of DeWine as he heads into what are certain to be his remaining years in workplace.

With no extra want to hunt approval from the voters. What does Jeremy say we would count on from the governor in his second time period? Laura,

Laura: he desires to give attention to issues that may outlast him. Issues like psychological well being providers, youngsters, and schooling. The frequent thread is that every one of those drawback coverage proposals, Are going, it’s going to require cash to perform.

He wants assist from the legislature, which as you, I’m certain [00:18:00] keep in mind, didn’t associate with his sturdy Ohio gun reform plan. So he can have all of the plans, he desires to get the cash to make them occur. He’s going to wish some assist. So, uh, if psychological well being in, in late November, DeWine out define that’s, Outlined a broad plan to enhance the psychological well being system.

He desires to increase the providers and analysis within the state, take away obstacles to younger folks getting psychological well being coaching and jobs. We don’t know precisely how a lot that may value, however we should always discover out quickly In his two 12 months funds schooling, he places hand in hand with job coaching. He desires Ohio to study extra firms like Intel, however he additionally believes within the significance of early childhood schooling, and that’s been a long run, uh, precedence of him.

Whereas he’s been governors to, to place more cash towards that and for teenagers, he’s proposed a sweeping set of modifications to increase Medicaid eligibility and publicly funded childcare for decrease incomes. Ohio psychological well being assets goes together with that. For postpartum moms. He desires to spice up foster care spending.

Chris: So I ponder whether if he [00:19:00] had one other disaster just like the coronavirus, whether or not he would keep on with his weapons now that he doesn’t have to hunt reelection or cave once more to the perimeter parts of his celebration. We talked so much in the course of the pandemic within the early months about how devoted he was to following the general public.

Recommendation. Then Amy Acton was gone and he gave the impression to be kowtowing to the perimeter individuals who didn’t need any laws in any way. Did Jeremy have any sense of whether or not he now, as a result of he doesn’t should reply and anyone will simply do what he desires to do.

Laura: I, it, it didn’t actually, the story didn’t actually focus on that, however I had the very same thought as a result of he has been, you understand, he’s 75 years previous.

He’s gonna be sworn once more on January ninth, so he’d be 79 when he leaves workplace. He’s held political workplace for the higher a part of 5 many years. County prosecutors, state lawmaker, Congressman, Lieutenant Governor. Us Senator, state Lawyer Common, and now governor, and also you’ve gotta assume like, he’s simply gonna be like, that is [00:20:00] it, guys.

That is the top of my profession. I’m gonna do what I feel is correct and I’m gonna push for it. Now, clearly, he hasn’t introduced again these gun reforms that he initially pushed for in his final time period, however I hope to see him arise and say, that is what you’re gonna get. I don’t should. Compromise. I imply, I, I would like him to work with different folks, however I do need him to face up for what he thinks is correct, no matter what the little loons within the State Home assume.

Chris: I assumed I used to be the one one which known as him loons. You’re listening to as we speak in Ohio. Individuals may keep in mind an organization from some years again known as Issues Remembered, which bought all kinds of knickknacks that might be engraved. It was based in Cleveland and information got here Tuesday. That each one however spells its demise.

Lisa, what was it?

Lisa: Yeah, I’m sorry to listen to about this. I’m really s. Looking at a clock that was given to me by my, uh, coworkers at Ok U H F after I left. And it’s from issues remembered. It has a little bit engraved plate. So it’s been a, an enormous a part of a variety of [00:21:00] folks’s lives for a number of many years. However issues remembered as a nationwide retailer.

They’re closing their Richmond Heights company workplaces on Curtis Wright Parkway and their distribution middle in Mahoney. They despatched a layoff discover to the Ohio Division of Jobs and Household Companies saying that 160 employees will probably be let go this month, together with over 50 of them in Richmond Heights. The corporate web site is down.

Anybody who goes to that deal with will probably be redirected to issues remembered Amazon Web page. This was based again in 1966 by. Coal. It was known as a Can-Do Store. It was in Louisville, Kentucky, and it provided engraving when you wait, which was what Issues Remembered is understood for. You may purchase something there and have it engraved when you wait.

Um, in 2019 they filed chapter 11 they usually had been purchased out by a, a gaggle known as esco. They saved some shops open below the issues remembered model, however many shops have closed since then. So that is type of unhappy information. I additionally simply purchased a Issues Remembered [00:22:00] Flask at a thrift retailer the opposite day. . Not my initials, however I had

Chris: I had no concept. It’s Cleveland Connection. All of the information that I didn’t both

Laura: noticed the stuff it, I didn’t both. And I keep in mind this, you understand, on the mall rising up and also you’d need it, it was, it was an enormous a part of, that’s the place you went and obtained presents for folks, proper? Like little jewellery bins or, uh, one thing silver engrave for a child after they had been born.

Or a primary communion present or blankets embroidered and. Yeah, I imply, I had a monogram bracelet. I, I do assume that individuals really feel very fondly about this retailer. Mm-hmm. , and it exhibits in our, uh, rankings for tales. This has stayed within the prime for the la the, the final day since Sean McDonald. That is, uh, revealed.

This issues

Leila: remembered is the final word final minute present. Cease. . You want one thing that’s mentioned to me. It’s, it appears so considerate, however they don’t understand you went that day and had it engraved with like, you understand, that’s on the mall. Biggest mall love, you understand, no matter . [00:23:00] So

Chris: see, I checked out it because the place you go, I don’t know what to get this particular person.

I’ll go there

Leila: and slap their identify on it. It appears so private. Yeah, look. Effectively, it was nice

Lisa: for company presents too. You already know, a variety of companies will go in and purchase a number of issues for his or her workers.

Chris: So, yeah. Yeah. I do know. I simply, it’s unhappy that, that, that it’s collapsing the best way it has. Um, and in some way all these years I had missed its Northeast Ohio connection.

It’s a great story by Present McDonald. It’s on cleveland.com. You’re listening to as we speak in Ohio. One of many largest tales out of the vacation season was the collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency trade amid allegations of fraud and embezzlement. Did Ohio Senator, she Brown, see it coming in his function as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee?

Leila?

Leila: Yeah. It seems he did. He’s. He’s been loudly sounding the alarm in opposition to cryptocurrency for fairly some time. Actually prophetically at at this July, 2021 listening to on cryptocurrency. He mentioned there’s [00:24:00] nothing democratic or clear a couple of shady diffuse community of on-line humorous cash. And since then, as you mentioned, Chris ftx.

You already know, they had been beforehand valued at 32 billion, however they’ve been pressured to file for chapter after a run on deposits. Left it with an 8 billion shortfall, and that brought on big losses for buyers. The run was triggered by a report that questioned the soundness of. An affiliated firm, Alameda Analysis, whose funds are actually entwined with ftx.

So Brown says, you understand, duh, predictable. He mentioned, the collapse of FTX is, is a loud warning bell that cryptocurrencies can fail. And similar to we noticed with over-the-counter derivatives that led to a monetary disaster. , these failures can have a ripple impact on shoppers in different elements of our monetary system.

He says, FTX did not train primary company controls or threat administration over its operations, they usually improperly relied on their very own proprietary crypto [00:25:00] tokens, which led to inflated valuations that that fueled irresponsible threat taking. He Brown has requested treasury secretary Janet Yellen and, and different federal monetary regulators to try regulate cryptocurrencies and the function that they play within the US financial system.

He says it if, if it behaves like securities, commodities or banking merchandise, they must be regulated.

Chris: Effectively, I, it, it all the time appeared like a Ponzi scheme to be, however my favourite second on this complete sorted affair over the previous few years is that everyone claimed that cryptocurrency allowed you to transact enterprise anonymously.

After which lawmakers and, and regulation of, uh, officers discovered really it doesn’t. And so they had been in a position to tie all kinds of individuals to horrible misdeeds as a result of, Eminently traceable. So what’s the level, proper? I imply, I simply, it looks as if it’s precisely what she says it’s. It’s a shady manner of, of conducting enterprise, and other people have misplaced [00:26:00] their shirts, investing in it.

There’s nothing tangible on the different finish. In the event you spend money on a inventory, there’s an organization behind the inventory. That is simply. Dandy lion seeds floating within the wind. I do know. Uh, attention-grabbing that she may have a key function in regulating who

Leila: would belief their cash to a system like this. Effectively, however

Lisa: right me if I’m improper, but when I recall, didn’t Ohio mentioned that they had been gonna settle for cryptocurrency for fee for sure fines?

Am I misremembering?

Laura: Yeah, I feel it was a Dave Yo particular,

Chris: proper? No, it was after. No, no, it was, it was after Bernie Moreno type of fooled Cleveland into pondering it might be the middle of of block blockchain. Um, he obtained the state to, to do this for some time. I don’t even know in the event that they do it anymore as an indication that we’re all in on blockchain.

So sure. Lisa , we had been a part of the Ponzi scheme. . It’s as we speak in Ohio. We’ve been listening to for years about robotic competitions in native colleges. They continually beg for consideration [00:27:00] from the media, however it is a totally different type of robotics story. How have some highschool college students in Cleveland and a nonprofit.

Created robotics which might be altering the lifetime of a woman in Ecuador. Laura,

Laura: that is so cool. Such a fantastic story from Julie Washington. Samantha Chango is 13. She had her left la left arm amputated because of a bus accident, so she had nerve injury and in her, in her proper arm that was. That left her unable to maneuver that arm and he or she wiggle her fingers or open and shut her hand.

So this group at Cleveland Metropolitan Faculty District, uh, has, you understand, they’re a robotics group. They had been used to constructing industrial measurement robots for competitions, they usually really obtained in contact with this woman via MA helps a California based mostly nonprofit that organizes medical humanitarian missions world wide.

That was due to. A mentor of, uh, John Dar Bradshaw. He was at this assembly with them, so he introduced it again. [00:28:00] There’s 60 youngsters on this group and mentioned, okay, let’s determine how to do that. So that they wanted to discover ways to use a 3D printer and make a prosthetic arm match correctly on an individual 1000’s of miles away.

Chris: Yeah, I gotta acknowledge, I’m very jaded about robotics press releases. I barely have a look at them anymore as a result of we get bombarded with them. So when this really turned out to be an attention-grabbing story, I used to be stunned.

Laura: Yeah, precisely. And, and I feel it’s, I imply, I gotta give credit score to a bunch of highschool youngsters that perceive robots.

I imply, that to me sounds loopy. Anyway, however, uh, they do. And they also, they obtained these photographs and movies of Samantha, alongside together with her measurements. They modified an open supply mannequin of a prosthetic arm. They discovered it on-line. They used light-weight plastic that might be softened in boiling water after which reshaped so they may make these small match changes fairly simply.

So one half, Matches on prime of Samantha’s current hand, after which she has a small cable connected to straps on her again. So she strikes her shoulders again. She will be able to pull the [00:29:00] cable, shut the plastic fingers, so she obtained all of this dexterity and talent that she didn’t have earlier than. And so the robotics group desires to maintain doing this design and ship extra prosthetics to needy youngsters in Cleveland and throughout the.

Chris: Okay, good story. It’s as we speak in Ohio. That’s it for our Wednesday episode. All Eyes will probably be in Washington as we speak to see if we provide you with a home speaker, and in Ohio. We’ll be watching to see what Jim Jordan’s function is. Thanks, Laura. Thanks, Lisa. Thanks Layla. Thanks for listening. We’ll be again on Thursday.
