Chris: [00:00:00] I believe immediately is a major day in Canada. We’ll should ask our native Canadian, it’s immediately in Ohio, the information podcast dialogue from cleveland.com and The Plain Vendor. I’m Chris Quinn. I’m right here with Lisa Garvin Le Tossi and that native Canadian Laura Johnston. Is there one thing about St. Nicholas Day in Canada?

Laura: No, it’s extra of a Dutch custom and my grandparents came to visit from Holland proper after World Warfare ii. Um, and so. It’s only a Dutch custom, and I believe on the holidays it’s like, no matter you are able to do to amp it up, like I’m, I’m gonna do it proper. I imply, I imply, St. Nicholas goes to do it. So he did go to our home in a single day.

We put out the footwear.

Chris: And your youngsters

Laura: received stuff they did. They received, uh, scorching chocolate balls and a few type of like pink and inexperienced gummy blocks factor and Yeah, some chapstick

Leila: very, that is, for this reason my youngsters wished to do that. I didn’t know what the heck they have been speaking about. They simply wanna be part of everybody’s vacation custom so [00:01:00] they might simply maximize their, their getting and video games.

Laura: I, I do suppose that, and I wrote a column about. That because the pandemic, we have now all like regarded ahead to holidays as one thing to embrace and produce us collectively and shine a lightweight. And so I believe, you understand, I by no means celebrated half the issues I . I’m now.

Chris: However now you will have a dearly bobber headset for each vacation on the calendar.

I

Laura: don’t have one for Cinco de Mayo. I really feel like I would like some Margo. Uh, bobs. Okay. However we’re having a vacation get together. I do have my antlers in my bag, so sure, antlers in sequins.

Chris: Effectively, we will’t get to that till we get to this. Let’s start. What’s Dave Joyce pondering? Did he actually say on Sunday that despite the fact that Donald Trump has advocated.

Terminating the US Structure. Joyce would assist Trump if he have been the Republican candidate for president in 2024. Does Joyce perceive {that a} president’s oath is to assist and defend the [00:02:00] Structure similar to a congressperson? Leila, this one actually shock me. I do know Trump says numerous loopy issues, however he’s a former p.

And wanna be president who mentioned, I believe we should always terminate the Structure. That’s a brand new degree of abolishing the federal government to be a dictator.

Leila: It’s. So for individuals who missed it over the weekend on Reality social media, which is Trump’s media, social media platform, he continued to press this large lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

And he. Quote, An enormous fraud of this sort and magnitude permits for the termination of all guidelines, laws, and articles, even these discovered within the Structure, so good Lord. So after that, Dave Joyce seems on TV in an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos and says that he would nonetheless assist Donald Trump in 2024 if that’s who the Republicans.

Joyce actually downplayed the importance of Trump’s deplorable suggestion that [00:03:00] we should always terminate the Structure to put in him as president. He referred to as it Trump’s fantasy as a result of he doesn’t actually have the ability to droop the Structure. And he mentioned, you possibly can’t actually take everybody of Trump’s tweets or loopy statements.

Severely? Yeah.

Chris: , all of us have turn into numb to Trump’s outlandish statements, however that’s, I believe, the aim. You simply maintain going additional and additional. Should you abolish the Structure, you abolish the abolishment of slavery, you abolish the, the rights which are within the Structure. Loads of Donald Trump’s followers would love that as a result of they’re white supremacists.

That is one the place I’d’ve thought Dave Joyce, who appears to be one of many extra cheap folks in Congress would’ve mentioned, Sure. That is deplorable past phrases. He ought to by no means be president once more. If he says stuff like that, for those who look, different Republicans did that, they did say, whoa. Proper? I imply, all of them took the identical oath, that entire foundation of our [00:04:00] democracy in our authorities.

Is that doc and the minute you begin to say it, it doesn’t stand, you erase our entire authorities, which is what Donald

Leila: Trump desires. Proper? And Congressman Mike Turner from Dayton. Additionally, he made some, some on air feedback about this case when he appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation. And he performed it significantly better than Joyce did.

He mentioned he vehemently disagrees with what Trump mentioned, and he described it as considered one of a thousand statements from Trump. He disagrees with, he mentioned he thinks an announcement like, just like the one Trump made will stick to folks as they consider Trump’s candidacy. And, you understand, he mentioned he was shocked and disgusted and nauseated by Trump’s internet hosting White supremacist and Holocaust.

And I are Nick Fu Fuentes and, and, uh, Kanye West at his Mar Lago property too. So he positively got here out sturdy towards Trump. This previous weekend, however Joyce is basically shocking as a result of he was one of many, the primary Republicans to affirm that Biden had gained [00:05:00] the 2020 election Truthful and Sq., and the primary to reiterate his allegiance to the Structure.

And he continued to face agency towards the large lie publicly stating that the election was not stolen from Trump. So that is simply actually outta left area for.

Chris: You. You may’t simply toss this off. I imply, that is the possibility for the Republican get together to be carried out with him. He principally mentioned, let’s dispense with our authorities and set up me because the dictator.

Sure, that is their probability. He ought to by no means have a place of authority once more. That’s the way in which he’s pondering. That’s what January sixth was about. If the oldsters in January sixth who he exhorted to violence had gotten a maintain. Pence or Nancy Pelosi, he would’ve declared martial regulation put in himself. That’s what this has all been about, and Joyce ought to have mentioned it.

I, we tried to provide him the possibility to stroll it again yesterday. He might have mentioned, look, I hadn’t seen what he mentioned. It hit me referred to as, in fact, I’m lifeless set towards that type of pondering and I gained’t assist any individual [00:06:00] that claims that. And he. He hit away. By no means referred to as again. He was in his little cubby gap, you understand, hiding out.

This can be a second of cowardice. It’s time to face

Leila: up. I ponder if Republicans are hedging their bets right here and attempting to determine what number of of their fellow Republicans truly agree with Trump. As a result of they’re so, I imply they’re so, the perimeter has gotten so large.

Chris: Yeah. That’s a scary thought. I do know, nevertheless it, for those who’re saying that there’s a bunch of those that suppose we should always dispense with the

Leila: Structure, don’t you suppose that’s.

Don’t you suppose that, that there’s such an enormous contingent of individuals? I imply, Donald Trump wouldn’t really feel so brazen, you understand, brazen sufficient to run once more for president if he didn’t suppose that he had individuals who felt the identical means.

Chris: However you gotta depend on folks like Dave Joyce to face up. Sure. It’s time to face the hell up and say, no, this far and no farther.

You will have crossed the road. We’re carried out with you. It’s time to maneuver on. I, I’m nonetheless shocked that Dave, look, I’d’ve anticipated this from Max Miller or Jim Jordan. I [00:07:00] imply, Jim Jordan is the most important Trump accolade within the nation, however not Dave Joyce. I imply, this can be a shock. Lisa?

Lisa: No, no. He was my congressman.

Um, you understand, I used to be drawn out of his district this yr. However, um, you understand, right here’s a person who was supporting leisure marijuana and understands, you understand, how marijuana convictions can have an effect on an individual’s life. That doesn’t sound like a far proper. Republican to me. And he’s been reasonable. We had an ideal endorsement interview with him.

We endorsed him. I imply, so yeah, I’m simply, I’m.

Laura: I additionally marvel, even for those who suppose it’s a fantasy and also you say We will’t take note of all of Trump’s tweets, Why would you assist somebody like that for president? Why would you say, yeah, he’s residing in a fantasy world, however we should always, we should always assist him anyway.

I imply, that is mindless.

Chris: That is the type of factor that for those who don’t stand as much as it instantly, folks get numb to it and it turns into a risk. It’s a must to say. Completely not. That’s the very foundation of what this [00:08:00] nation stands for, and he didn’t do it. It, uh, I, I hope we hear from him once more. Uh, once more, he hit out, he wouldn’t name again.

Can

Leila: I, can I immediately know the way? Oh, I simply wished so as to add one factor that I used to be, type of received chills after I learn the Jim Jordan. Quotes on this story as a result of you understand, Jordan provided his full throated endorsement of Trump and mentioned he’ll do no matter he can to assist Trump win in 2024, which ought to actually scare the heck out of us as a result of Jordan will probably be heading up the Home Judiciary Committee, and the alternatives to abuse that place of energy to learn Trump’s candidacy are countless.

So, Simply,

Chris: yeah, however Jordan is the cartoon character Buffoon of Ohio. It’s not the identical as Joyce. I, you understand, Jordan has been doing these things all alongside. I can’t consider he retains getting elected. He’s, he’s a joke. He doesn’t stand for something. He’s principally simply taken his complete personhood and put it into the palms of

Leila: Donald Trump.

However what I’m saying is that he’s gonna use the Home Judiciary Committee as a aspect present throughout Trump’s candid. [00:09:00] That’s, that’s what he means.

Chris: The sideshow is the definition of Jordan . It’s immediately in Ohio, after years of backwards and forwards. Is Ohio going to have a photograph Id rule for folks after they vote? Lisa, it’s again.

I believe

Lisa: it’s gonna come all the way down to the wire, although. There’s been a whole lot of final minute modifications in revisions to a complete host of voter payments, however this explicit invoice is Senate Invoice three 20. It requires a photograph ID or driver’s license with a present handle. In an effort to vote. Now, present Ohio regulation permits a non-photo verification, like a utility invoice, a paycheck, or a financial institution assertion.

Uh, the invoice has been sitting round since Could of this yr. It was sponsored by Senator Teresa Gaon, the Republican from Toledo. Um, so voters with an old-fashioned handle on their id. Would forged a provisional poll. These ballots wouldn’t be counted till the verification of your id is full.

So that would trigger, you understand, delayed outcomes and, and [00:10:00] different issues. Uh, invoice websites, the Republican from Cincinnati, um, we spoke to him yesterday on the editorial board and he’s truly not likely discovered of this. He says, we actually shouldn’t make Ohioans get a brand new ID each time they. However he additionally urged exceptions to this regulation for Amish and others who object to having their picture taken on spiritual grounds, which is type of scary.

Um, you understand, I perceive the Amish, however others I’m not so certain. And so they additionally, he additionally says we should always enable army IDs as a main type of, uh, verification. And he expects these modifications to be added. And allow us to say that, that invoice websites instructed us yesterday that he hopes. Home Invoice 2 94 and all these associated payments by way of the la Duck session of Congress.

Chris: Like, I get pounded from the left. what I imply? , proper. I get pounded from folks on the left after I say it, however I, I, I’ve all the time tripped over why that is such an issue. I get it. There. There are folks of lesser means that won’t have a photograph [00:11:00] ID. And seniors in nursing houses who don’t drive anymore, could not have a photograph id, however a photograph ID is ubiquitous in America now you want it for all the pieces.

And my mother was within the hospital each time I went in there, I needed to pull out my picture id. It’s, it’s, you employ it to purchase liquor, you employ it to do all types of issues. And if the issue is, Folks in nursing houses and others don’t have ‘em, why don’t we make it simpler for them to get them? I simply don’t see the difficulty that, that, that that is such a horrible, horrible factor.

Can, can I bounce in for saying that?

Leila: Go forward, Leila. Uh, the issue that I see with this invoice is requiring that the motive force’s license or the ID has a present handle. As a result of the folks in, in, you understand, decrease, decrease, uh, socioeconomic lessons are transient generally. And I imply, we see it even after we’re speaking about, you understand, our particular colleges mission.

The households that we have now gotten to know transfer so usually. So each single time somebody is his [00:12:00] uprooting their household and has to maneuver to a brand new residence, they should go and get a brand new voter ID to keep up their, their eligibility to. Or they should get a brand new, you understand, state issued id. There’s a simple repair’s That’s a very large burden on

Chris: folks.

However there, there’s a simple repair for that. When you’ve got a photograph ID with an outdated handle and also you’re going to vote in award that doesn’t match that handle, that’s after they must will let you convey a utility invoice. Certain. Present utility invoice to,

Leila: this appears to be in, in. Created to, to disallow that. I don’t see a, a provision in right here that, that claims that’s, that’s the repair, however

Chris: we might repair it.

I imply, however you would repair it. I simply, there’s a, amongst a, a large a part of the inhabitants, simply an absolute, this, this shouldn’t be required. And it’s like, What number of instances a yr do you pull out your picture ID for doing stuff That’s not practically as essential as voting and I, it’s simply, we’ve been preventing and preventing and preventing about this for years and I, I simply marvel, is that this actually a problem to, to attract [00:13:00] the road within the sand?

We might make this work, um, with id theft so prevalent. It, it does make sense to have a bonafide picture id, however I, once more, I’m. A number of offended e mail about this. I put it on subtext immediately. I’m certain it’s already there. Laura, do you wanna say one thing?

Laura: I beneath, I’m with Layla. I believe this could be a large drawback if the handle will not be taken care of, proper?

If we don’t handle that, handle the handle. However I believe extra so it’s like, why are we spending our time on this? There are a whole lot of issues on this planet, and voter fraud will not be considered one of.

Chris: Okay, we’re not gonna get to all our tales immediately. It’s immediately. In Ohio, the pandemic was assured to be a fountain of fraud.

With all of the aid efforts that have been justifiably rushed into place to assist individuals who have been troubled at the moment, it’s now as much as regulation enforcement to catch the fraudsters. What are three brothers from Euclid charged with doing? Laura?

Laura: Making up [00:14:00] faux firms to get covid aid cash, which is fairly unhealthy if you discuss in regards to the complete 7 million in small enterprise loans and grants geared toward serving to firms survive the Coronavirus pandemic.

Keep in mind how unhealthy it was originally? Effectively, Zau Colin Tarley Ally, Carlin Tarley, and aiding to. Sorry. Calend Rav they com created 70 faux companies all with the identical handle. In Euclid, they declare to farm natural meals after which they use the cash to purchase homes and automobiles. So all three are charged with wire fraud, conspiracy, and aggravated id theft.

That id theft as a result of they use their wive’s. Names for a few of the companies, and Zaur lives in Euclid. His brothers dwell in Los Angeles they usually created these firms like Ohio Almonds and Peanuts LLC, and Ohio Natural carrots between Could of 2020 and October of 20, 20 74. Functions for loans.

They received 7.4 million in Cares cash.

Chris: Yeah, I, it’s simply the fraud was rampant. However what do you do to [00:15:00] guard towards the fraud? You’ll’ve needed to delay the advantages and on the level they have been doling out these advantages firms have been in severe want. Firms are going outta enterprise, folks have been dropping their jobs.

So I hope the decide takes into consideration in the event that they’re convicted and places them in a particular place in hell cuz they took benefit of Proper. The federal government attempting to do one thing good. You

Laura: marvel although, . I perceive they have been sending out this cash as quick as they might, however they might possibly Google the businesses.

I ponder how a lot effort they put into making them look actual for 70 firms. All of them had the identical handle. You’ll suppose someplace there was a flag within the system. That’s like you probably have greater than a few companies on the identical handle, we should always look into it.

Chris: I do know, nevertheless it, it comes all the way down to how many individuals did you will have?

It’s a useful resource concern. I, you understand, I lastly received my, my Cleveland earnings tax refund yesterday. And what, what has struck me is, I’m unsure, that is some diabolical factor to maintain our cash greater than it’s. They simply don’t have any folks in that workplace and [00:16:00] it’s taken them endlessly.

Lisa: And so they have antiquated pc programs.

Chris: Effectively, it’s on paper. I don’t even know that they’re utilizing a

Laura: pc system. Did they hand write you a test?

Leila: No, nevertheless it, you understand, the donkey confirmed up

Chris: to ship it . It was printed on the twenty ninth. I received it on the fifth and it’s void in 30 days. So there’s type of a problem there with how shortly it goes and it, however, however I believe, you understand, that was an workplace that was set as much as largely acquire.

Varieties not course of, gazillions of refunds. And so they haven’t added folks, I don’t suppose. And they also work gradual. I believe it’s the identical factor on this case. The federal government had some huge cash. They have been attempting to get into folks’s palms in order that they’d not lose jobs or lose sustenance within the pandemic. And so the controls have been lack.

And you understand, I believe all of us knew, all of us mentioned there’s gonna be fraud and the, and prosecutors are gonna should go after it.

Leila: They’ve carried out, man, 70 faux companies. I believe they might have gotten away with it if they’d carried out 30

Laura: they usually modified the handle. [00:17:00]

Leila: Geez. Yeah. Proper. Yeah.

Chris: Attempt to cowl it up. These weren’t smart criminals.

I believe with just a little little bit of smarts, folks most likely might get away with the fraud. I imply, suppose how a lot cash went out in unemployment fraud that may by no means be collected again. Proper. It’s immediately in Ohio. How are proper wing teams so highly effective nowadays that they will shut down drag story hours at libraries in Ohio and elsewhere?

Leila, this sort of will get again to the primary dialogue we had Sure. In regards to the white supremacist supporters of Donald Trump feeling stronger due to silly statements he makes that provides them credibility.

Leila: I used to be truly pondering of this story after we have been speaking about that these, these drag story hours are meant to be joyful, inclusive, entertaining occasions to.

Construct literacy in youngsters and in addition elevate cash for charitable causes. And children love them as a result of the drag performers are much more expressive in studying tales than, you understand, bookstore homeowners or librarians generally are, no offense to them, , however, um, far, far proper. Extremist teams like [00:18:00] The Proud Boys and a few group referred to as Patriot Entrance and White Lives Matter, Ohio have.

Actually terrorizing them for fairly a while it appears. And now that has escalated to all out protests at these venues which are internet hosting these occasions, intimidating them into canceling all of them collectively outdoors one canceled studying on the first Unitarian Universalist Church. Um, these protestors stood in ballistic vests and different fight garb carrying army type assault weapons, and a few of them have been flashing Nazi salutes to passing site visitors.

After which in June of this yr, A person with a bullhorn tried to drown out a, a youngsters present that was hosted by drag performers calling one a pervert and accusing them of grooming and indoctrinating kids in, in August, organizers referred to as off a Disney film themed drag queen story hour within the Columbus space that was supposed to lift cash for the ALS affiliation.

And an identical occasion that month in Cleveland was, was met with protests as effectively. [00:19:00] The supervisor of 1 faculty introduced the cancellation of their, their drag story hour occasion after the Proud Boys mentioned that they have been gonna seem there, and he or she mentioned the proud boys involvement created a necessity for safety. And that prompted stress between performers who wished a police presence and an LGBTQ subset that doesn’t belief native regulation enforcement.

In order that that was a problem. So that is simply one other a part of the rising tide of antagonism towards the LGBTQ neighborhood nationwide. And such as you mentioned, it exhibits that brazen high quality of the far.

Chris: Effectively, this, I type of stayed beneath the radar. I noticed it pop up on Reddit the place some folks have been speaking about it, so we did the story about it.

However I’m just a little bit shocked. This has till very lately stayed beneath the radar and it, and it’s horrible. I imply, it’s, it’s principally drowning out. Free speech as a result of they’re, they’re so intimidating. I, the issues I’ve learn haven’t mentioned a lot about whether or not they’re armed [00:20:00] after they’re doing it, however I’ve gotta presume that’s a part of it too.

Leila: Yeah, I imply, truly this story did say that they’d army type assault weapons in a few of these, uh, protests. And it’s, that’s simply unconscionable to point out up at an occasion the place kids are, are there to only take pleasure in a narrative. What on this planet,

Lisa: and, and I do know this Donald Trump’s, that is like driving a really high-quality line right here, however I, I’m virtually sorry that they’re, they’re being pressured to cancel.

I imply, if, if I have been like a drag carry out and I’ve mates who’re drag queens, you understand, I’d exit and do it simply. Regardless of them, I believe canceling it offers them precisely what they need. After all, like I mentioned, there’s, there’s a, there’s a risk of a violence. These persons are, you understand, usually are not proper within the head.

They’ve weapons, however I simply really feel like canceling is giving them simply what they need.

Leila: That’s true, however when youngsters are concerned, proper. You may’t be

Laura: too cautious. Proper. You may’t be too cautious. No. And in Rocky River, I believe it was final yr or the yr earlier than, we did have one and there wasn’t armed protestors there, nevertheless it was [00:21:00] an enormous hub up on social media.

Folks received actually offended on the library board. So this has been happening for a few years now, at the least.

Chris: A relentless theme of the correspondence I get and, and focus on with folks is about how folks within the heart are largely sitting out the, the debates within the nation. They’ve left the controversy to the folks on the perimeter.

And it will get to what Lisa mentioned, if persons are simply gonna cancel and say, I don’t need the nonsense and keep dwelling, we’re principally giving it away. We’re, we’re giving the, the venues to the loopy folks. It’s precisely. Donald Trump desires mm-hmm. , and we’re enjoying proper into it as a result of the folks of widespread sense decency usually are not standing up and saying, get outta right here.

We, that’s not what this nation stands for. So it’s ugly instances. It’s immediately in Ohio. Why do specialists say this flu season is seeking to be significantly unhealthy, particularly for kids? Lisa, this sort of bubbled up up to now week, an enormous

Lisa: flu collection. [00:22:00] Yeah, it definitely did. And Influenza A is surging amongst kids simply as, um, an early onset of.

RSV season is winding down, so pediatric beds regionally and throughout the nation are nonetheless close to capability. In keeping with knowledge from the Facilities for Illness Management. Hospitalizations of kids are the best. In 10 years, we’ve had 3000 flu deaths, together with 12 kids since October. And the, within the usa in Ohio, uh, the variety of pediatric flu sufferers is up 77%.

For the final week of October, 75% of pediatric. Beds are full within the state of Ohio. Uh, Dr. Frank Esper, who’s a pediatric inve infectious illness specialist at Cleveland Clinic says about half of the youngsters with signs are testing constructive for flu. He says something over 40% is fairly regarding, and he’s nervous that this.

Could possibly be worse than the rsv, you understand, uh, wave that we had in October. Um, he mentioned principally, [00:23:00] this sort of boils all the way down to us being socially distanced, masking up, staying away from folks. So little youngsters and infants that have been born through the pandemic had little publicity to respiratory viruses, which they actually type of have to kickstart their immune system.

So he says that their immune programs are type of naive at this level, in order that they’re very vulnerable to virus.

Chris: Effectively, the excellent news is the flu shot is lifeless on correct this yr. So if folks get it, they’re truly protected. Um, my spouse is a instructor and he or she mentioned youngsters have been simply dropping first or RSV and now they’re dropping from the flu.

She’s seeing it. I think about that the Christmas season, if that is nonetheless in full flame, we’ll unfold it even additional. Are you guys, Laura and Leila, are you listening to a lot about your faculty system or youngsters’? Yeah, listening to

Leila: that. However um, yeah, we simply contin, we vaccinated everyone to the utmost on our household. And, uh, hoping for the bus va to the max,

Laura: to the max to, [00:24:00] that’s Christmas card emblem this yr.

Chris: You’re listening to At present in Ohio, Cleveland’s division of Well being hopes to assist folks breathe simpler. What’s it doing to detect air pollution within the metropolis?

Laura: Laura? It’s creating on this expanded community of displays to concentrate on high-quality particulates and the bottom degree ozone that may a exacerbate bronchial asthma.

And naturally, you understand what bronchial asthma is, it’s, it inflames the airway makes it more durable to breathe. However this statistic is astounding. Eight to 10 kids, na, eight to 10% of kids nationally have bronchial asthma. However for areas of Cleveland, the speed method 24. I imply, that’s thoughts boggling and actually unfair as a result of air air pollution clearly can come from wherever it travels.

This isn’t level supply air pollution. So the US EPA awarded the Well being Division of Cleveland a $500,000 grant to purchase this cellular air monitoring unit. It’ll measure the presence of high-quality and course particulates, in addition to that ozone. It’s [00:25:00] gonna mount on a trailer and be deployed in traditionally redlined areas of the town.

These areas usually are not coated by the well being division’s. 14 everlasting error monitoring areas round Cuyahoga County, and I didn’t notice that Kaga County had a bunch of air displays which are often outdoors libraries they usually’re as small as a hockey puck that may inform you how unhealthy the air is.

Chris: My query is, say these items detect big quantities of particulates within the air, in these neighborhoods.

What are they gonna do? I imply, to, to cease that, you’d should go discuss to issues just like the metal plant, and I believe there’s gonna be a reluctance to try this. So what’s, what they’re gonna do is inform folks, keep indoors and have an air filter as a substitute of going on the supply of the air pollution. Effectively,

Laura: I believe they’re gonna assault it two methods.

One could be sure, let’s determine the right way to make this air safer within the speedy future. I don’t suppose they’re gonna. Sounding an alarm that claims, everyone go inside proper now, the air will not be protected.
