Cleveland State Men’s Basketball Hires Kwanza Johnson as Assistant Coach

Cleveland, OH-Kwanza Johnson has been named to an assistant coach position on the Cleveland State men’s basketball staff, Head Coach Daniyal Robinson announced today. Johnson replaces Jermaine Henderson, who departed for a similar position at the University of Dayton a short time ago.

Johnson brings over twenty years of college coaching experience to Cleveland State and shares a strong connection to Coach Robinson after the two worked together at Arkansas Little-Rock.

Kwanza takes great pride in developing and serving student-athletes on and off the court, building long lasting genuine relationships, while maintaining a relentless work ethic on the recruiting trail. Johnson comes to Cleveland following a one-year stint at The University of California-Berkley this past season. He served as the Golden Bears’ Coordinator of Video and Recruiting Operations in 2022-23.

Prior to his time at Cal, Johnson spent four seasons at Tulsa, his alma mater, as an assistant coach. Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree from Tulsa in 1995. He got his start as an administrative assistant under Bill Self from 1997-99, and then completed two separate stints as an assistant coach on the Golden Hurricane staff.

He served as an assistant from 2001-05 and returned for his most recent stint from 2019-22. He helped coach Tulsa to an American Athletic Conference regular season championship in 2020, as the Golden Hurricane finished with a 13-5 record in conference play.

In addition to his time at Little Rock, Johnson’s career also includes stops at Nevada, TCU, Georgia, and Eastern Illinois.

Johnson spent two seasons as the associate head coach at Little Rock from 2016-18. He spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at TCU from 2013-16. During his stint with the Horned Frogs, TCU ran off a run of 13 consecutive victories to start the season in 2014-15, which remains a program record.

Prior to that, Johnson spent eight seasons as an assistant coach under Mark Fox at Georgia (2009-13) and Nevada (2006-09).

Johnson mentored several key players during his time with Georgia and Nevada. At Georgia, he mentored Trey Tompkins and Travis Leslie, both of whom went on to earn All-SEC honors before being selected in the 2011 NBA Draft. He also worked with 2013 SEC Player of the Year Kentavious Caldwell-Pope who went eighth overall to the Detroit Pistons in the 2013 NBA Draft.

At Nevada, Johnson mentored Nick Fazekas, who earned First Team All-America honors in 2007 in addition to winning the WAC Player of the Year award. JaVale McGee also exceled under Johnson’s watch and was selected 18^th overall in 2008 by the Washington Wizards.

As a player, Johnson led Tulsa to back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference titles and two Sweet 16 appearances during his time with the Golden Hurricane. He also played two seasons for Rose State College before transferring to Tulsa.

Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree from Tulsa in 1995 and later added a Juris Doctor degree from the Tulsa College of Law in 1999.

He and his wife Kim have three children; daughters Kaitlyn and Kendall and son Kalli.

Northern Ohio Weather Warning: Severe Storms thru 10PM, Unhealthy Air

Cleveland, OH – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front this afternoon and evening in northern Ohio. A couple of these storms may become severe, with damaging winds approaching 60 mph and locally heavy rainfall. The most likely timing for these storms is between 2 PM and 10 PM, moving from west to east.

According to the US National Weather Service in Cleveland, while some areas might not experience any rain, the possibility of isolated severe storms remains significant. Residents are advised to stay indoors when thunder roars and avoid flooded roadways.

Adding to the concerns, the air quality index in Cleveland is currently at 121, indicating conditions that are unhealthy for sensitive groups. Residents, especially those with respiratory issues, are advised to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers if available.

Today’s forecast for Cleveland includes a high of 82°F and a low of 71°F, with cloudy conditions and a 50% chance of precipitation. The UV index is low, and visibility is clear at 10 miles. Looking ahead, the weekend forecast predicts partly cloudy skies with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Five-star wide receiver chooses Oregon over Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore committed to Oregon on Thursday night, as the hotly contested recruitment ended with Moore choosing the Longhorns.

Moore chose Oregon over Ohio State, Texas and LSU. He was originally committed to LSU, but backed off his pledge in May.

“After today, I am done with my recruitment,” Moore said on Instagram Live.

Ohio State had been interested in the Duncanville, Texas native for quite a while and hosted him on one of his four official visits back on the weekend of May 31. At 5-foot-11 and 182 pounds, Moore is the No. 3 overall player in the country and the No. 1 receiver. But the Buckeyes’ hope of landing the top receiver in a recruiting cycle for the second-straight season now appears to be over.

The Buckeyes have three commits in their wide receiver room for the 2025 class: Four-star Quincy Porter, four-star De’zie Jones and three-star Bodpegn Miller. The hope was that Moore would be the fourth in the class, but now, they’ll have to look elsewhere.

And, for whatever it’s worth, Ohio State’s chances of being the No. 1 recruiting class in the country has taken a slight hit. Alabama and LSU both have higher average player ratings (94.11, 93.73) compared to Ohio State (93.70). The Buckeyes still have the No. 1 class, but Alabama and Oregon are surging, and Georgia still only has 17 commits in the class compared to 22 for Ohio State.

What do we know about the man police say killed a Cleveland officer?

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – We’re learning more about the man police say fatally shot that Cleveland police officer on the city’s East side Thursday morning.

The suspect, 24-year-old Delawnte Hardy ― who also goes by “Tay” ― was arrested and charged with aggravated murder.

Available public records don’t reflect that Hardy has a criminal history, although police were serving him with a warrant at the time of the incident. Records do indicate he graduated high school in 2017 and attended some college, majoring in business.

Hardy doesn’t appear to be very active on social media. He does, however, claim to be an aspiring artist. On Instagram, he posted some violent drawings ― one showing himself as an emoji holding a gun.

Some of his video reels are hard to understand. One he posted on July 3rd of last year shows him smoking a cigar as he ranted.

“The Lord told David to take off Goliath’s head, we about to take these ni***’s heads off,” Hardy said.

Police say the shooting happened in the 1500 Block of E. 80th St. around 1 a.m. in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood. Officers were attempting to serve Hardy a warrant for felonious assault. When they arrived, they saw him leaving on this bicycle. They say they tried to stop him, but Hardy fired shots, fatally killing one of the officers.

Now investigators are working to piece things together and reconstruct what happened, but they’ll likely never understand the reason why.

Hardy is expected to be arraigned tomorrow. As for the warrant for felonious assault — we couldn’t find any records of that charge.
