Cleveland Fire responds to Ohio City Funeral home fire, downtown high rise incident minutes apart

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Fire was busy overnight as crews responded to two fires overnight in Downtown and Ohio City.

Our Overnight News Tracker followed Cleveland Firefighters as flames shot into the sky from a burning property in Ohio City.

Cleveland Fire surrounded the former Nunn Funeral Home in the 4400 block of Lorain Avenue for hours.

They were called here just before 1:30 a.m. after someone spotted thick smoke and fire.

News 5 has learned the funeral home closed roughly 20 years ago—and a developer was looking to transform it into a retail space and new apartments.

Firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading to a used car lot steps away and stop further damage.

The former funeral home is believed to be a total loss.

Then, just 10 minutes later, dozens of tenants were forced out of a high-rise apartment downtown.

Cleveland Fire rushed to The Luckman on East 12^th Street at Chester Avenue.

They were called for a fire in the trash chute just before 1:40 a.m.

Crews quickly got it under control.

They were called back to the scene after the fire re-ignited.

Tenants were able to return to their apartments around 5:15 a.m.

They told News 5 there is extensive water damage, and water is currently leaking through the ceilings and onto the carpet all the way into the main lobby.

Officials said there was $450,000 in damage.

No word on what caused either fire, but as soon as News 5 gets any updates, we will bring them to you.

US Marshals arrest 20-year-old murder suspect in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – U.S. Marshals said a 20-year-old murder suspect was arrested Thursday after months on the run.

According to a news release, Kevin Wright was wanted by Cleveland police for aggravated murder.

Marshals said on Jan. 2, 2024, Tyrone Griffin, 17, died after he was hit by a car and then shot in the head.

The crash and shooting happened in the area of East 69th Street and Fleet Avenue in Cleveland’s Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood.

Cleveland officers identified Wright as a suspect and a warrant was issued, according to the release.

Marshals on Thursday tracked Wright to East 164th Street in the Lee-Harvard neighborhood, and they arrested him after a short chase.

“For over two decades, the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Cleveland Division of Police have been working together to combat violent crime in the City of Cleveland by taking violent fugitives like this off the street.”

37-year-old man murdered in Cleveland’s Lee Harvard neighborhood

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A 37-year-old man was murdered on the city’s East side early Thursday.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Lashawn Roby.

Cleveland police said Roby was found in the 17300 block of Harvard Ave. around 5:35 a.m.

EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

At this time, there are no arrests.

Anyone with information is asked to call Cleveland police.

U.S. Marshals search for New York fugitive believed to be in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A reward is being offered for information leading to the capture of a fugitive from New York.

Malik Shabazz is wanted by the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office in New York for burglary, robbery, assault with the intent to cause physical injury with a weapon, and criminal use of a firearm.

According to the U.S. Marshals, Shabazz, 19, is known to frequent the Cleveland area. He is a Black man, 6′3″ d 250 pounds.

On April 25, a member of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force team went to a home on W. 104th Street to serve a warrant for Shabazz.

U.S. Marshal Pete Elliot said Shabazz was not at the home, but a second suspect assaulted the task force member.

Gerard Rainey, 26, was taken into custody at the scene and charged with assaulting a federal officer.

The task force member was treated and released from a local hospital.
