Kyle Stowers also singled and doubled for Miami (57-97), on track for its worst record since going 57-105 in 2019.

Valente Bellozo (3-4) allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings and Anthony Bender, Lake Bachar, Declan Cronin and Jesus Tinoco combined for two-hit relief. Tinoco got three straight outs for his second save.

Charlie Morton (8-9) gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings and threw a run-scoring wild pitch. He is 0-2 in his last three starts.

Ozzie Albies, a switch-hitter batting right-handed only, was 0 for 4 in his return from a fractured left wrist that had sidelined him since July 21.

Burger hit a run-scoring ground-rule double in a three-run first that included Stowers’ RBI single and Jonah Bride’s sacrifice fly.

Ramon Laureano and Orlando Arcia homered off Bellozo, with Laureano’s 404-foot drive to center cutting Atlanta’s deficit to 4-3 in the sixth. Former Marlin Jorge Soler had a sacrifice fly in the third.

Burger was voted the Marlins’ most valuable player for the 2024 season by South Florida’s chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Right-hander Declan Cronin was voted top rookie.

Judge disciplined for sex in chambers and lying to investigators apologizes for ‘offensive conduct’

A federal judge who was disciplined after an investigation found that she had sex with a police officer in her chambers and then lied about it wrote a letter to a former law clerk apologizing for her “harmful, offensive, and unprofessional behavior.”

An investigation initiated last year by the chief judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit found that U.S. District Judge Eleanor Ross had sex in the courthouse with a high-ranking uniformed police officer within earshot of staff, attended a partisan event and initially lied when confronted with the allegations. Ross wrote in the letter dated Thursday and obtained by The Associated Press that her “actions were patently wrong, and there is no excuse.”

“You deserved better than to have your experience marred by my own offensive conflict,” says the letter, which was first reported by The New York Times.

Ross was nominated to the bench in the Northern District of Georgia in 2014 by then-President Barack Obama, a Democrat.

The investigation of Ross began after one of her law clerks reported that on multiple occasions the judge had engaged in sexual activity with a high-ranking uniformed police officer in her office during working hours. It also was alleged that the judge didn’t properly supervise clerks and on one occasion yelled and cursed at staff.

Ross received a “private reprimand” that didn’t publicly name her after the investigation confirmed the allegations against her. She also agreed not to seek the position of chief judge of the district when eligible and to write apology letters to six former law clerks.

William Pryor, the chief judge of the 11th Circuit, opened the initial investigation of Ross last fall. He asked her to respond to the clerk’s allegations that she had had sex in her office and had attended a partisan event. She replied the same day and “specifically denied” each allegation. In a follow-up email the next day, the judge speculated to Pryor that the law clerk may have invented things in retaliation for being required to work in the office.

Ross’ letter says, “I also want to convey my deepest apologies to you for my false accusation against you. Again, I have no excuse and immensely regret my behavior.”

The letter also references a previous letter that Ross wrote to the clerk, saying it was “entirely deficient, as I did not take full accountability for my actions, and I failed to give you the apology that you deserve.”

Federal judges are appointed for life and can only be removed by impeachment by Congress. Two Georgia congressman this week filed separate impeachment resolutions against Ross. It is up to the House Judiciary Committee to decide whether to start impeachment proceedings.

Pryor appointed a special committee to investigate. That investigation was detailed in a report attached to the disciplinary order.

The committee’s review of logs and security footage showed an officer had frequently visited the judge’s chambers in uniform around lunchtime. Six clerks recalled seeing someone who fit the officer’s description, with three remembering overhearing what may have been sexual activity in the judge’s office.

Three clerks remembered bringing summer interns on their first day to watch the judge presiding over a hearing in a criminal case. Right after that, they told the committee, the judge declined to have lunch with the interns, acknowledging having too many martinis the night before at a primary election victory party for a district attorney friend.

The clerks said the judge didn’t provide sufficient guidance and “rarely, if ever, substantively edited civil orders the clerks drafted.” While clerks described an “eggshell culture,” the committee didn’t find evidence of abusive behavior.

The judge ultimately admitted to having an extramarital sexual relationship with the officer but denied the allegations about mistreatment of staff, the committee wrote. The judge acknowledged to the committee having gone to a “mixer” of former employees of a district attorney’s office where the judge used to work, but said it was in a separate room from the victory party.

“Though I can never fully undo the harm that I have caused you, I hope that my acknowledgment of these failures is a small first step,” Ross wrote in the letter to her former clerk. “I will be taking further steps to ensure that this never happens again.”

Everything to know about getting to Atlanta Stadium on World Cup matchdays

ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – For the first time ever, the FIFA World Cup is headed to Atlanta!

After being skipped over in 1994, Atlanta is hosting eight matches during soccer’s biggest tournament, including a semifinal. Here’s what you need to know before heading out the door to Atlanta Stadium.

Wait, where?

Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be known as Atlanta Stadium during the tournament because FIFA requires stadiums to cover existing advertising in order to protect its own commercial partners.

It’s the same place, just under a different, temporary name.

When are the matches in Atlanta?

Here’s a list of all eight matches.

  • Monday, June 15, noon: Spain v. Cabo Verde
  • Thursday, June 18, noon: South Africa v. Czechia
  • Sunday, June 21, noon: Spain v. Saudi Arabia
  • Wednesday, June 24, 6 p.m.: Morocco v. Haiti
  • Saturday, June 27, 7:30 p.m.: Uzbekistan v. the Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Wednesday, July 1, noon: Round of 32
  • Tuesday, July 7, noon: Round of 16
  • Wednesday, July 15, 3 p.m.: Semifinal

Where can I buy tickets?

Tickets can be found on FIFA’s website.

When do gates open?

Gates open three hours before each match.

What’s the best way to get to the matches?

Parking must be purchased through FIFA. There are more than 20 parking lots with spots within a mile of the stadium, although they’ll run you a pretty penny. Some parking spots for Monday’s opener between Spain and Cabo Verde are going for more than $100!

You can find parking here.

MARTA is also available. Atlanta Stadium has two stations nearby, one on either side of the stadium: both the Sports, Entertainment and Convention District and Vine City stations are served by the Blue and Green lines. The Vine City station is also served by several bus lines and has a pedestrian bridge going over Northside Drive to the stadium.

If you’re taking the Gold or Red lines to the matches, you’ll have to transfer at the Five Points station. According to FIFA, MARTA trains will run every five minutes between 4:45 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on matchdays to accommodate crowds.

What can I bring with me into Atlanta Stadium?

If you can, leave the bags at home. The bag policy at the stadium can be much more limiting than it appears.

Clear vinyl bags can be 12 inches wide, 12 inches tall and 6 inches deep. Bags that aren’t clear can only be 4.5 inches wide and 6.5 inches tall.

FIFA also banned reusable water bottles from World Cup venues, but you can bring in one sealed plastic water bottle.

Also banned: large signs, large umbrellas, bottles, chairs, pom poms and beach balls, among other items. You can check out the full list here.

What can I do if I can’t make it to the matches?

FIFA Fan Festival Atlanta will be at Centennial Olympic Park! Taking place on certain days from June 11 to July 19, it features screenings of the big games, musician performances, food and drinks, a market, a children’s area and more.
