Milwaukee shooting outside smoke shop; teen faces charges
MILWAUKEE – A Milwaukee teen is accused in connection with a shooting outside a smoke shop near 39th and Capitol on July 4. The accused is Marquon Howard, 17, and he faces the following criminal counts:
- First-degree recklessly endangering safety
- Possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18
According to the criminal complaint, Milwaukee police were dispatched to a report of a shooting outside a smoke shop near 39th and Capitol on Thursday, July 4. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man in a nearby driveway.

A detective responded to Children’s Wisconsin during the course of the investigation — and met with the defendant, Marquon Howard. The complaint says at the time, it had not yet been determined that Howard played a role in the incident. Howard told the detective he was walking in an alley with two people towards the smoke shop. In front of the shop, there was a Jeep and the driver “may have said something to them but that he did not hear what was said,” the complaint says. Howard said the two people he was with went towards the Jeep, he followed, “and that (one person) fired at the driver and the driver returned fire. Howard stated that he ran and realized he was shot and laid down in the grass in front of a residence,” the complaint says.

Later, the detective conducted a Mirandized interview with Howard. Howard stated that the third person in their group was the one that shot. Howard “stated that he did not hear what the driver of the Jeep said because he was the first person inside of the smoke shop.” The complaint says he also “stated that he is not dumb enough to shoot himself, and he does not have a firearm.”

The detective learned at Children’s Wisconsin that Howard suffered one bullet strike. He also “determined through the surveillance video and Howard’s pants recovered at the hospital that Howard likely did shoot himself in the leg when putting the firearm, seen in the video, in his pants,” the complaint says. The detective noted in the complaint that “the pants recovered had no bullet strike to them.”
According to the criminal complaint, surveillance video shows Howard’s friend exiting the smoke shop and firing shots at the Jeep. “Howard then exits and fires a shot at the black Jeep,” the complaint says.

The driver of the Jeep was later stopped in Brookfield for a traffic violation — and the vehicle had a bullet strike on the front passenger side.

Howard made his initial appearance in Milwaukee County court on Tuesday, July 9. A signature bond of $3,000 was set.
MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred on early Sunday morning on the 4900 block of W. Capitol Drive that left one person injured.
An 18-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Police Department requested the public’s help to find 11-year-old Sir’Charles Bason, a critically missing boy who was last seen near Teutonia and Kiley at around 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 18.
Police described Bason as 4 feet, 5 inches tall with a slim build, brown eyes and black, low-cut hair. He was last seen wearing a gray jacket with green lines, dark-colored jeans, tan sandals and carrying gray Nike Jordan shoes.

MILWAUKEE – A Milwaukee man, previously named one of Wisconsin’s Most Wanted, has been sentenced to prison for shooting and killing his cousin in 2020.

A Milwaukee County jury found 39-year-old Brandon Gladney guilty of first-degree reckless homicide and possession of a firm by a felon earlier this year.

Judge Michelle Havas sentenced Gladney to 29 years in prison on Friday, April 17. He was granted credit for more than a year’s time served and further sentenced to 14 years of extended supervision.
Arrested in Arizona after years on the run, court records show Gladney has also been ordered to pay the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office more than $1,800 for extradition costs.

The backstory:
The shooting happened in May 2020. Investigators said Gladney was captured on video apparently arguing with the victim, his cousin, outside a Milwaukee convenience store near 21st and Meinecke.
“It’s all on video, and it’s devastating for that family,” the marshal on the case told FOX6 when Gladney was profiled on Wisconsin’s Most Wanted. “You have a family member that shot and killed another family member.”

Prosecutors said Gladney walked away but then returned with a gun pointed directly at the victim and shot him. The victim died from his gunshot wounds at a nearby hospital. Multiple bullet casings were found at the scene.
Gladney went on the run for years. He was arrested in Arizona in January 2023, years after he was charged.
