Dogs alert homeowner to 11-foot, 500-pound gator in Florida backyard

MIAMI – A South Florida homeowner is praising a pair of barking dogs for alerting him to a very unwelcome intruder in his backyard.

It wasn’t just any intruder, but an 11-foot-long alligator weighing nearly 500 pounds.

Tim Nguyen called Miami-Dade police, who along with a trapper were able to wrangle the reptile and take it to a better location.

Experts say now is the time when gators are on the move, not only because it’s breeding season, but also because gators’ metabolism increases with the warmer weather.
