Wyoming's Wyatt Wieland, Caleb Cooley Earn Academic Honors

LARAMIE — Wyoming Cowboy Football student-athletes Wyatt Wieland and Caleb Cooley have been named to the 2023 Academic All-District Football team for Division I as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC).

The nation’s top student-athletes are recognized for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically and have achieved an undergraduate 3.50 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) to qualify for Academic All-District honors. A graduate student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) as both an undergraduate and a grad student. The cumulative grade-point average may not be rounded up to 3.50.

Football student-athletes must have competed in 90 percent of their institution’s games during the current season or must have started in at least 66 percent of those games to qualify.

For Wyatt Wieland, it is the second consecutive season that he has earned Academic All-District. In December of 2021, he completed his bachelor’s degree at Wyoming with a 3.675 cumulative GPA in finance. He then completed his master’s degree in business administration at UW in December of 2022, achieving a 3.714 graduate GPA.

Currently, he is working on his third degree from Wyoming, a bachelor of science degree in management, earning a 3.592 GPA. Wieland, a wide receiver from Colorado Springs, Colo., leads Wyoming this season in both receptions (39) and receiving yards (425). He also earned Honorable Mention All-Mountain West Conference honors this season.

Caleb Cooley earned Academic All-District honors for the first time in his career this season. Cooley is a senior majoring in entrepreneurship where he has earned a 3.765 cumulative grade-point average.

The native of Chico, Calif., is Wyoming’s leading punt returner. He has returned eight punts for an average of 4.3 yards per return. Cooley is also a back-up wide receiver for the Pokes.

Eligible nominees who receive Academic All-District® recognition may also advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. This year’s Academic All-America football teams will include First, Second and Third teams and will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024.
