Vegas Golden Knights acquire Anthony Mantha from Washington Capitals

(KTNV) — The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired left-wing Anthony Mantha from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 2024 second round draft pick and a 2026 fourth round pick.

Captain Mark Stone was recently placed on long-term injured reserve, leaving the Knights in need of a forward.

Mantha has played in 56 games this season, recording 20 goals and 14 assists.

The Capitals will retain 50 percent of Mantha’s $5.7 million contract.

Defense motions to suppress au pair's police testimony in double murder case

Attorneys for an au pair charged in a double homicide in Northern Virginia filed a motion to suppress testimony their client made to officers minutes and hours after they arrived at the crime scene.

Prosecutors and police say Brendan Banfield plotted with Juliana Peres Magalhaes to kill his wife, Christine. The suspects were involved in an affair for months before Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan were killed in the Banfields’ Herndon home in February 2023, prosecutors say.

The suspects used a sex fetish website to lure Ryan to the home, prosecutors say.

Christine Banfield was found stabbed to death in the home. Ryan was found shot nearby.

Peres Magalhaes told Fairfax County police officers she and Brendan Banfield found Ryan attacking Christine in the bedroom and that Brendan shot and wounded Ryan during the attack. The suspects told police Brendan then told Peres Magalhaes to get another gun so they could shoot him again.

At Thursday’s hearing, Peres Magalhaes’ attorneys argued testimony their client gave police should be suppressed because police unlawfully seized her. They said in body camera video their client is seen asking officers, “Do I have to go? Can I go back inside of the house?”

The prosecution argued against the claim that Fairfax County police seized the au pair, saying police treated her with care and respect. Officers did order her to leave and go to police headquarters, prosecutors said. Police wanted to provide a safe option where Peres Magalhaes and the Banfields’ young daughter could be warm and safe, prosecutors said.

The judge is expected to make a ruling on the defenses motion to suppress the au pair’s testimony next Thursday.

Peres Magalhaes was charged with second-degree murder in Ryan’s death last year.

Brendan Banfield was indicted Monday on four counts of aggravated murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Summary of the Washington Capitals 1992-93 Season

Summary of the Washington Capitals 1992-93 Season

Photo: Getty Images

With the Washington Capitals celebrating their 50th anniversary, NoVa Caps is summarizing each season of the team, from earliest to most recent. The series continues with the 1992-1993 season, their 19th season.

The Capitals record was 43-34-7 in 80 games for 93 points and second place in the Patrick Division. They ranked 10th out of 24 for goals scored and 10th out of 24 for goals given up. [Note: the NHL added two new expansion teams, the Ottawa Senators and the Tampa Bay Lightning.]

Positive news: This was among the most balanced attacks in Capitals history. Nine players scored at least 20 goals, and Kelly Miller was just shy of that with 18. Three of them were defensemen: Kevin Hatcher, Al Iafrate, and Sylvain Cote.

The downside is that there’s just one play anyone remembers from this year, and it occurred in the season-ending loss to the Islanders in Game 6 of the opening round. After Pierre Turgeon scored to give the Islanders a 5-1 lead and all but end the competitive portion of the series, he raised his hands in the air to celebrate. Dale Hunter took that as a signal to level Turgeon from behind.

That hit sidelined Turgeon for the next series (though he returned for the Eastern Conference finals against Montreal), and the ensuing suspension cost Hunter the first 21 games in 1993-94.

On the transactions front, the Capitals acquired Kevin Miller before the start of the season, which you assume would have made alternate captain Kelly Miller happy since they’re brothers. But the Kevin Miller era lasted just 10 games before he was shipped off to St. Louis, which felt more painful because the Caps sent future Hall of Famer Dino Ciccarelli to Detroit to acquire Miller and received Paul Cavallini when they sent him on to St. Louis. Shockingly enough, this example of asset management does not appear on GM David Poile’s Hall of Fame profile.
