Washington athletics org's proposals to change trans-athlete policy would violate state law, official says

Washington appears to be the latest state that is getting set for a showdown over its decision to allow biological males to play in girls’ and women’s sports despite President Donald Trump’s executive order in February.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA)’s Representative Assembly proposed two amendments to its policies that would keep girls’ sports to biological females only and potentially offer an open division if student-athletes were interested.
Washington state is set up for a showdown over trans athletes in girls’ and women’s sports.
However, WIAA commutations director Sean Bessette said in a statement to The Seattle Times on Tuesday that the proposals would violate state law.
“The WIAA has been told by the Attorney General’s office, the Office for Civil Rights, and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction that proposed amendments ML/HS #7 and ML/HS #8 would be a violation under current Washington state law, affirming our attorney’s legal review,” Bessette told the paper. “The WIAA remains committed to following state law, and those amendments focused on gender-identity participation would not be implemented on August 1 if they were to pass under current state law.
“If state law were to change, the WIAA’s Executive Board has the authority and would need to alter the Association’s rules accordingly.”
The proposals will be voted on by the 53-person representative assembly but no changes will be made to the rules. The proposals titled ML/HS #7 and ML/HS #8 are strictly advisory votes only.
“Amendment would not be implemented under current State Law. Participation in girls’ sports would be limited to biological females,” the ML/HS #7 proposal read on the athletics organization’s website.

“Amendment would not be implemented under current State Law. Athletic programs would be offered separately for boys, girls, and an open division for all students interested,” ML/HS #8 read.
Washington state law requires local educational agencies to allow transgender students to participate in interscholastic sports “that most closely aligns with their gender identity,” according to the WIAA.
The Kennewick School Board filed a Title IX complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights against Washington state’s Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal this week. The complaint included a plea for “urgent” federal intervention against the state’s ongoing policies that defy Trump’s order.
Reykdal previously claimed it was “inaccurate” to say there are only two genders during a video address in late February.
“It is quite simply inaccurate to say, biologically, that there are only boys and there are only girls,” Reykdal said. “There’s a continuum. There’s a science to this. There are children who are born intersex. There are children whose hormones and whose chromosomes are not consistent with their sex at birth.
“Our state laws make clear that children get to identify and participate based on the gender in which they identify. We’re going to uphold that law.”
Reykdal also insisted in that address that Trump does not have the authority as president to issue a ban on trans athletes in girls’ sports but conceded the U.S. Congress does.

Another school district in Washington opted to take matters into its own hands and defy the state government in late February.
The Tumwater School District’s board of directors voted 3-1 Feb. 27 to ban trans athletes from playing for girls sports teams after a nationally publicized controversy involving one of its school’s girls basketball teams.

Trump threatens to pull federal funding from California over trans athlete controversy at state championship

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to get local law enforcement involved should California continue to allow a transgender athlete to participate in girls’ sports.
Trump cited the biological male athlete in California who will compete in the girls’ long jump and triple jump in the state championships next week. The athlete recorded a distance of 40-04.75 in the triple jump, compared to the runner-up’s 39-06.00. In the long jump, the athlete recorded a distance of 19-03.50, while the runner-up managed 19-00.75.

The transgender athlete has continued to perform in California under California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) events despite Trump’s executive order to prohibit biological males from competing in girls’ and women’s sports.
Trump called out California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a post on Truth Social.
“California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow ‘MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’S SPORTS.’ This week a transitioned Male athlete, at a major event, won ‘everything,’ and is now qualified to compete in the ‘State Finals’ next weekend,” Trump wrote. “As a Male, he was a less than average competitor. As a Female, this transitioned person is practically unbeatable.
“THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS. Please be hereby advised that large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to. The Governor, himself, said it is ‘UNFAIR.’”
Newsom previously talked about transgender participation in girls’ sports back in March with prominent conservative Charlie Kirk.
“The young man who’s about to win the state championship in the long jump in female sports, that shouldn’t happen,” Kirk said. “You, as the governor, should step out and say no. Would you do something like that? Would you say no men in female sports?”

“I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it’s deeply unfair,” Newsom told Kirk. “I am not wrestling with the fairness issue. I totally agree with you.”
Kirk pressed Newsom on whether he would condemn the athlete in question from Jurupa Valley High School after the athlete won another event at the time. Newsom did not directly address the win but said “it’s a fairness issue.”
“So, that’s easy to call out the unfairness of that,” he said. “There’s also a humility and a grace. … These poor people are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression. And the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that I have a hard time with as well.
“So, both things I can hold in my hand. How can we address this issue with the kind of decency that I think, you know, is inherent in you but not always expressed on the issue?”
Newsom further explained his point of view in a press conference on April 2 when asked whether there should be a law to prohibit males from competing in girls’ and women’s sports.

“And I’m about as transparent about this as anybody out there, particularly in my party, on this, and to the extent someone can and do it in a way that’s respectful and responsible and could find a kind of balance, then I’m open to that discussion. … You’re talking about a very small number of people, a very small number of athletes, and my responsibility is to address the pressing issues of our time.
“And this, I think, has been colored in and weaponized by the right to be 10 times, 100 times bigger than it is and so my focus is on a myriad of other issues in this state. And to the extent that someone could find that right balance, I would embrace those conversations and the dignity that hopefully presents themselves in that conversation, meaning the humanity around that conversation, not the politics around that conversation.”
Trump, in his Truth Social post on Tuesday, wrote that he would speak with Newsom about it.
“I will speak to him today to find out which way he wants to go??? In the meantime I am ordering local authorities, if necessary, to not allow the transitioned person to compete in the State Finals. This is a totally ridiculous situation!!!” he wrote.

The CIF announced a policy change later Tuesday for the state championship. The competition will now include biologically female athletes that missed out on qualifying for the competition that may have placed higher were it not for a trans athlete’s participation.
“CIF’s proposed pilot is a reasonable, respectful way to navigate a complex issue without compromising competitive fairness — a model worth pursuing,” Izzy Gordon, Newsom’s director of communications, said in a statement. “The Governor is encouraged by this thoughtful approach.”
Trump’s administration has already warned the CIF and the athlete’s high school of consequences for allowing the situation. The federation came under additional scrutiny when its officials allegedly forced athletes to remove shirts that read “Protect Girls Sports” at the Southern Sectional prelims on May 10.

Bryce Huff Traded To The San Francisco 49ers
The Philadelphia Eagles have traded defensive lineman Bryce Huff to the San Francisco 49ers for a mid-round draft pick, CBS Sports reported.
Speculation about a possible trade began to gain steam on May 30, but a deal could not be made official until after June 1. To help facilitate the deal, Huff restructured his contract, and both teams worked diligently to make the deal happen.
Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports took to X (formerly Twitter) to share what the Eagles received in exchange for Huff’s services.
“Trade compensation update: it’s a 2026 conditional fifth-round pick that can turn into a fourth,” CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones wrote of Philly’s compensation. “Condition(s) tied to performance. All pending physical.”
Additionally, “the Eagles will absorb dead-cap hits of $4.93 million and $16.61 million in 2025 and 2026, respectively,” according to Spotrac.
In 2023, Huff had his best year as a pro, posting a career-high 10 sacks for the New York Jets. Last offseason, Huff signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the Eagles. But what seemed like a great free agent signing turned out to be a significant disappointment. Huff missed five games due to injuries and only managed 2.5 sacks and 15 tackles for the season. During his brief tenure with the Eagles, Huff seemed not to be on the same page as the Eagles’ coaching staff.
During the Eagles’ victory in Super Bowl LIX, Huff was inactive although he was healthy enough to play. With that move, the writing was on the wall for Huff’s future in Philly. His roster spot was given to Eagles legend Brandon Graham.
With the trade, Huff will reunite with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, his former coach during his tenure with the Jets.
