Utah Democrats reelect Diane Lewis as party chairwoman

CEDAR CITY — Utah Democratic Party Chairwoman Diane Lewis will serve as party leader for another term after she was reelected by delegates on Saturday.
During their convention in Cedar City over the weekend, Utah Democrats also gave Vice Chairman Oscar Mata a vote of confidence by reelecting him to that post.
“I was truly honored to be reelected as chair with 65% of the vote on Saturday,” Lewis said in a statement. “The next two years will be crucial for our party and I look forward to continuing to work alongside fellow Democrats from across the state to fight back against Republican extremism, take our message of common sense public service directly to Utahns, and win up and down the ballot.”
Lewis has a background in organized labor and worked for the Laborers’ International Union of North America after moving to Utah nearly two decades ago.
Her challenger, Jacob Lawson, helped unionize the first Starbucks store in the state last summer.
Lewis defeated Lawson 425-239, and Mata gathered 355 votes to defeat Nicholas Mitchell, 289, and Daniel Osterstock, 12, after the first round of ranked-choice votes were tallied.
