US Customs and Border Protection pilot killed in helicopter crash near San Diego

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection pilot was killed in a Monday helicopter crash near the southern border in California, authorities said. 

The Eurocopter AS35 helicopter went down around 10:15 a.m. in a private field near Potrero, east of San Diego, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told Fox News Digital.

A CBP Air and Marine Operations aircraft was on an unspecified border security mission when it was involved in an “aviation mishap,” a CBP spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

“Tragically, a CBP Air Interdiction Agent – the pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft – was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

The pilot was not identified. 

“Only the pilot was on board. The FAA and NTSB (National Tranpsortation and Safety Board) will investigate,” the FAA said. “The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide further updates.”

Monday’s incident was the second time a helicopter has gone down in San Diego County this year, Fox 5 reported. 

The act being argued in court called for 800 miles of double, reinforced fencing, although today less than 100 miles of double fencing exists. Regardless, California argues that waiver authority expired in 2008 and does not last forever. (REUTERS)

In February, a crash killed five U.S. Marines and prompted a massive foot search in the area during heavy rain and snow, the news outlet reported.

Health officials track fourth King County resident tied to MV Hondius Andes hantavirus


Public Health – Seattle & King County officials are monitoring a fourth King County resident for possible exposure to the Andes type of hantavirus linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak, health officials said Friday.

The Washington State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified local health officials on May 14 about the additional resident, according to Public Health – Seattle & King County.

The resident did not travel on the cruise ship but was aboard a flight from Johannesburg to Amsterdam with an ill cruise ship passenger before departure.

Officials said the sick passenger was removed from the aircraft before the flight left Johannesburg and later tested positive for the virus.

The infected passenger began traveling before the outbreak was reported to the World Health Organization.

The King County resident is considered at low risk for infection because they were not seated near the ill passenger, health officials said.

The resident has returned to King County, remains asymptomatic, and is monitoring for symptoms.

Earlier this week, Public Health announced that three King County residents were under monitoring for the Andes type of hantavirus.

Two of those residents had been seated near the infected passenger on the Johannesburg-to-Amsterdam flight. Both have returned home to King County, remain symptom-free, and are monitoring for symptoms in coordination with public health officials.

A third King County resident who was a passenger aboard the MV Hondius is being monitored alongside other American passengers at the national quarantine center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Officials said that the resident remains asymptomatic.

Health officials said there are currently no cases of Andes-type hantavirus in King County, and no residents are showing symptoms. The risk to the public remains low, officials said.

“We were informed yesterday of a fourth individual with a low-risk exposure and were able to reach the resident today,” Dr. Sandra J. Valenciano, health officer and acting director for Public Health – Seattle & King County, said in a statement. “All our residents are following public health protocols, and the risk to the King County community remains low.”

Valenciano said monitoring exposed individuals allows health officials to support residents while ensuring early detection and rapid public health response if symptoms develop.

Hantavirus infections are rare but can cause severe illness.

The viruses are primarily spread through contact with wild rodents and exposure to their urine, droppings, or saliva.

According to health officials, the Andes virus is the only known hantavirus capable of spreading from person to person, typically through close physical contact, prolonged exposure in enclosed spaces, or contact with body fluids from an infected person.

Middle East operations could strain Navy, Marine Corps budget and training plans


Top military leaders are warning members of Congress that the cost of ongoing military operations in the Middle East, along with other recent efforts, including in counternarcotics, could soon force difficult decisions on training and overall readiness.

During a congressional subcommittee budget hearing this week, lawmakers questioned how long the Navy and Marine Corps can sustain its current level of operations with a historic amount of warships in the Middle East.

Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Ken Calvert asked Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle how long the Navy could continue operating at its current pace before funding runs short.

“Sir, I will have to start making decisions to change training, operations, certifications events, those types of things we do to generate our force, in the July time frame in the current expenditure,” Caudle said.

The warning comes as Calvert outlined that the Navy is making a $377.5 billion budget request, a 23% increase over the previous fiscal year.

Calvert noted the financial impact the war against Iran has had and said, “Our munitions stockpiles are depleted, our fleet has deferred maintenance — critical maintenance — and our service members have been operating on an extended deployment schedule.”

Rep. Betty McCollum also warned that rising fuel costs tied to the conflict could further strain military operations.

“In addition to the threats our sailors and Marines face, I’m concerned about the broader costs of the war,” McCollum said. “The skyrocketing costs of fuel will limit the Navy and the Marine Corps ability to conduct exercises for the rest of the year.”

Potential reductions in training and certification efforts could have a significant impact in San Diego, home to more than 136,000 active-duty service members, including roughly a fourth of all Marines and a sixth of all Navy sailors, according to the San Diego Military Advisory Council.

Lawmakers also raised concerns about the growing size of China’s naval fleet compared with the United States’.

“Despite our focus on the Middle East and elsewhere across the globe, China still remains our pacing threat,” Calvert added.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently testified that the war effort in Iran has carried a nearly $30 billion price tag. The Defense Department is now facing pressure to replenish munitions stockpiles, improve shipbuilding capabilities and maintain readiness for future threats while continuing current operations.

The Department of Defense’s proposed budget for the upcoming year totals $1.5 trillion, the largest defense proposal in U.S. history.
