It was always going to be a tough act to follow.

San Jose State University’s volleyball team was eliminated from making the Mountain West Tournament with a loss Saturday to University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and finished the season under .500 with a 13-16 overall record and 8-10 in conference play. 

SJSU outperformed expectations, finishing seventh in the Mountain West after being expected to finish 11th in the conference’s preseason coaches poll after a controversy involving trans athlete Blaire Fleming in 2024. 

Head coach Todd Kress led last year’s team to the conference final but had eight wins, including the conference semifinal, awarded via forfeit. SJSU previously made the conference final with Fleming in 2022, the trans athlete’s first year with the Spartans under former head coach Trent Kersten.

The controversy involving Fleming resulted in two lawsuits during the 2024 season, a federal investigation by the U.S. Department of Education and a mass exodus of players. At least seven of the team’s returning players from 2024 entered the transfer portal in December after the season ended.

The controversial 2024 season included eight forfeited matches, regular police protection, national scrutiny and internal turmoil between players and coaches.

Kress previously said the 2024 season was one of the “most difficult” of his life. Kress is 21st in NCAA women’s volleyball history in wins as a head coach.

“This has been one of the most difficult seasons I’ve ever experienced, and I know this is true as well for many of our players and the staff who have been supporting us all along. Maintaining our focus on the court and ensuring the overall safety and well-being of my players amid the external noise have been my priorities,” Kress said.

Kersten was the coach who recruited Fleming to SJSU as a transfer out of Coastal Carolina. Kersten then stepped down after the 2022 season and was replaced by Kress. 

Former SJSU co-captain Brooke Slusser transferred to SJSU from Alabama in 2023 

Then, in September 2024, Slusser joined a lawsuit against the NCAA alleging SJSU officials withheld knowledge about Fleming’s birth gender from her and other players on the team. Slusser alleged she was made to share changing and sleeping spaces with Fleming without knowing that Fleming was a biological male. 

Slusser, along with several other players in the Mountain West, filed a separate lawsuit against the conference and San Jose State in November 2024 over Fleming’s presence. That lawsuit included testimony from former San Jose State volleyball players Alyssa Sugai and Elle Patterson alleging they were passed over for scholarships in favor of Fleming.

Assistant coach Melissa Batie-Smoose was suspended by the program in early November after she filed a Title IX complaint against the university for showing favoritism toward Fleming over the other players, especially Slusser. Batie-Smoose’s complaint also included allegations of Fleming’s plot to have Slusser spiked in the face.

Batie-Smoose’s contract was not renewed by the school at the end of January. The coach then filed her own lawsuit against the Board of Trustees of the California State University (CSU) system. SJSU is one of 23 California-based schools that are part of the system. 

Batie-Smoose told Fox News Digital that SJSU accommodated Fleming with special exceptions that were not granted to female athletes.

“Not showing up to practice with no excuses, sitting in the stands eating while practice was going on, those kind of things,” Batie-Smoose said of the special exceptions reserved exclusively for Fleming. 

Fleming previously responded to Batie-Smoose’s claim and addressed Slusser in a social media exchange with Fox News Digital. 

“The only times I showed up to practice with ‘no excuse’ and sat in the stands was when I was injured and couldn’t play. Brooke Slusser and Melissa need to get a life,” Fleming said. 

After the 2024 volleyball season, Slusser fled SJSU after frequent alleged harassment and threats by other students in response to her speaking out against Fleming and the program the previous fall. She returned to her parents’ home in Texas to finish the school year remotely and is now working as a youth volleyball coach in North Carolina. 

Fleming celebrated graduation from SJSU in a social media post in May.

The University of Nevada, Reno, which was involved in the 2024 controversy for trying to have its players compete against SJSU and Fleming despite preferring to forfeit, finished the 2025 season in 11th place with an 8-20 record, 4-14 in conference play.

Norwegian filmmakers’ documentary spotlights homelessness in Anchorage, aims for Alaska screening


ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Two Norwegian filmmakers say their debut documentary, Anchorage Welcomes You, is meant to put viewers face-to-face with people living on Anchorage streets — not to prescribe a political fix, but to “describe the situation” and the human stakes behind a crisis visible across the city.

“I think the core story is to shine a light on the prevalence of the problem that is in Anchorage when it comes to drug abuse and homelessness,” said director/cinematographer Peter Gupta. “But it’s also to show how people are … capable of taking a wrong turn in life and coming back from it.”

The documentary was shot over multiple trips to Anchorage spanning roughly two years, beginning with a summer 2022 visit, followed by a winter 2024 return and a completion last fall.

Gupta, along with editor/screenwriter Rasmus Aarskog Sætersdal, said the project first grew out of Gupta’s canoe trip down the Yukon River, where he said he saw “communities ravaged by drugs and alcohol.”

“I canoed the whole length of the Yukon in 2017,” Gupta said. “And I saw what was going on in all the villages. And I wanted to go back and make a film at some point.”

Gupta said he met Anchorage resident Erinn Leann — a central figure in the film — at the end of that trip and told her then he planned to return to Alaska to make a documentary.

A title drawn from a sign — and the ‘duality’ beneath it

The film’s title comes from the weathered “Anchorage Welcomes You” sign seen by commuters entering the city — and, the filmmakers said, from what they described as the contrast between Anchorage’s image and the encampments they saw nearby.

“It was interesting when we were there the first year and we saw this Anchorage welcomes sign falling apart and a whole … camp growing up beneath it,” Sætersdal said. “And it was just this … you can say duality of presentation for the city.”

Gupta said the pair debated keeping the name, but after multiple test screenings they found Alaskans preferred the working title.

“We’ve had ambivalent feelings about the title of the film because it’s kind of tongue in cheek,” Gupta said. “We didn’t want to keep it at some point, but the people from Anchorage really wanted to keep it.”

Building trust — and setting rules

Much of the film unfolds in intimate, up-close moments that are hard to capture in traditional daily news reporting.

Sætersdal said filming required clear rules and consent. He said the filmmakers spent time walking the same routes and meeting the same people repeatedly. Gupta added that trust was foundational.

“I think it’s so important, that respect for whoever is participating, that’s a prerequisite for bringing them into the project,” he said.

Anchorage through outsiders’ eyes

Asked what makes homelessness in Anchorage distinct, Gupta said his travels shaped his perspective. Gupta described what he called “social fragmentation” and “hopelessness” — a situation he said can be more than just a lack of material resources.

“I’ve been around the world,” he said. “And the poverty in the United States is different.

“When you go to the United States, there’s a social fragmentation in a way that is quite unique. And I think there is a hopelessness and a different character to it … it’s not only a material problem. It is also a social problem.”

Sætersdal added Alaska’s identity as a frontier draws people seeking escape.

“Alaska still has this mythical place in imagination as the last frontier,” he said. “You see also people coming from all over the country … coming to Alaska in escapism of something. And then there’s nowhere else to go.”

‘Not to tell the people of Anchorage what to do’

Gupta and Sætersdal said they hope the documentary sparks conversations without presenting a single prescribed solution.

“What we’re trying to do with this film is not to tell the people of Anchorage what to do about homelessness,” Gupta said. “It’s about describing what’s happening and sparking a conversation.

“We hope that we can kind of make the homeless appear as resourceful and also capable of changing. But it’s not down to us what to do with it.”

Returning to Anchorage — and trying to bring the film home

Now, the two say the hope is to screen it in Alaska — and eventually get broader U.S. distribution. They said navigating distribution has been its own grind, but Sætersdal added that Alaska continues to pull at them creatively.

“Alaska really is a place that it sticks to you,” Sætersdal said. “You can’t unsee it once you’ve been there and you can’t like brush it off. It becomes a part of you.”

Restaurant Week is returning to Arizona, which means its time to try something new at some of the best locally-owned restaurants in the state for lower-than-usual prices.

Spring Restaurant Week lasts from May 15-24, and will return in the fall from September 18-27. During those weeks, three-course prix fixe menus are available at over 200 local restaurants for $33, $44 or $55.

Reservations are not required at most establishments to enjoy the Restaurant Week menus, but they are highly encouraged.

With so many to choose from, we combed through the offerings to find the stand out deals. Many of the participating restaurants have appeared on The Arizona Republic’s list of 100 essential restaurants. Others have received numerous national awards and recognitions, including several James Beard Foundation Awards semifinalists.

Here are 8 of the best menus to try during Arizona Spring Restaurant Week 2026.

Beginner’s Luck

When Beginner’s Luck opened in Old Town Scottsdale in December 2023, The Republic’s Bahar Anooshahr fell in love with chef Bernie Kantak’s brunch. The restaurant later earned him a spot on the semifinalist list for Best Chef — Southwest for the James Beard Foundation Awards in 2025.

Cocina Chiwas

Multiple-time James Beard Award semifinalists and culinary power couple Armando Hernandez and Nadia Holguin opened Cocina Chiwas at Culdesac Tempe in 2023 as an upscale sister restaurant to their original Tacos Chiwas restaurants.

Cocina Chiwas’ $44 Restaurant Week menu includes ceviche, ribeye tacos, mole and pastel de elote. For an additional $14, guests can try the Roxxstar cocktail made with vodka, Cocchi Rosa, watermelon, lemon juice, yuzu and orange bitters.

First & Last is a contemporary neighborhood restaurant. Their sandwiches are Instagram-famous and got the stamp of approval from The Republic. The whole menu focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients.

First & Last’s $55 Restaurant Week menu includes roasted beet salad, Hiramasa crudo, bacon sourdough bolognese, grilled chicken piccata and pistachio tiramisu. The menu also includes recommended optional wine pairings for each course.

Indibar
