Sounders overpower Nashville SC before lively home crowd | Seattle Sounders
Electric is an understatement when describing the atmosphere at Lumen Field on Saturday evening.
The energy throughout the 90 minutes was palpable as the crowd continuously erupted during the Seattle Sounders’ resounding 3-0 win over Nashville SC.
“Winning 3-0 definitely is fun for the fans,” said forward Danny Musovski. “I think that first half was really exciting, and some guys on the bench were saying they didn’t want to go warm up in the first half because they were having fun watching us. So I think everyone enjoyed it.”
After Seattle’s gutsy road win against FC Dallas the previous weekend, the team was determined to keep the momentum going in today’s home match. They did exactly that, and then some.
“I think everybody came together for these couple of wins, and I’m going to use my voice to drive that forward for the remainder of the year,” said Head Coach Brian Schmetzer.
In the lead-up to the match, the messaging to the group was to come out on the front foot as soon as the referee blew the first whistle and put Nashville under immediate pressure. It is safe to say this objective was translated seamlessly into tonight’s performance.
“We wanted to come out and really outwork them, out-smart them, and out-think them,” said Schmetzer. “There were some real positives in the game tonight.”
It only took the Sounders 15 minutes to show their attacking capabilities. What started with an encouraging opening goal from Musovski in the 19th minute, ended with two more goals from Pedro de la Vega and Paul Rothrock with 9 minutes left to spare in the first half.
“I was very pleased to have a good performance against a good team,” said Schmetzer.
From Musovski collecting his second consecutive game-winner, to Jesús Ferreira coming into his own with two primary assists, there were several individual efforts on the pitch that allowed the team to achieve a first-time win over the Eastern Conference side.
But, it was the collectivity displayed from the team that ultimately pushed them toward the dominant shutout.
“It was three goals that were out of a team play,” said de la Vega. “So it’s something that is important to be able to achieve as a team.”
And with the additive of the home supporters in the stands, there was no stopping the Rave Green on Saturday night.
“When we play local, we feel that we’re playing local, that we played in our home field,” said de la Vega. “That makes us very strong.”
With Tuesday’s trade deadline coming up fast, we knew that NFL teams would be calling the Seattle Seahawks about cornerback Riq Woolen. A recent scoop from Brady Henderson at ESPN stated that Seattle has been shopping Woolen for a while now,
So, part of Adam Schefter’s Saturday evening scoop did not come as a surprise. He reports that the Seahawks are indeed actively fielding calls about potential trades for Woolen.
However, Schefter’s report also dropped some new information: teams are also calling Seattle about outside linebacker Boye Mafe, who is playing out the final year of his rookie contract.
“Teams have inquired to the Seattle Seahawks about the availability of standout linebacker Boye Mafe and former Pro Bowl cornerback Riq Woolen, sources told ESPN on Saturday.
“Seattle hasn’t wanted to trade Mafe or Woolen, according to sources, but it will be interesting to see how aggressive another team might be ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.”
Also part of Seattle’s stellar 2022 NFL draft class, Woolen is playing out the final year of his rookie contract, as well.
That’s just one of several reasons why the Seahawks clearly want to trade Woolen – regardless of what Schefter’s report says about them not wanting to trade either one. That claim contradicts common sense as well as the latest scoop from NFL Network, which suggests that a deal is more likely to get done than not.
Woolen had a magnificent rookie season and was in the conversation to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year award, which wound up going to Jets star Sauce Gardner. Since then the two have taken opposite paths, with Woolen dropping off and Gardner continuing to ascend to an elite level.
There’s still a chance that Woolen could join Gardner in that rare group at the top of the game’s most-challenging position. However, the Seahawks haven’t been able to get it out of him either under Pete Carroll or Mike Macdonald, both of whom have benched Woolen at different times.
As for Mafe, he’s had a supremely promising start to his career – including a nine-sack performance in the 2023 season. Mafe’s production has also fallen off, though. In seven games this season he has yet to record a single sack and has managed just two quarterback hits.
Long story short, the Seahawks may claim they don’t want to trade either one, but if they get a good enough offer over the next couple of days, they’ll take it.

Seattle Reign’s Laura Harvey says ChatGPT inspired NWSL tactics: ‘It said play a back five, so I did’
Seattle Reign head coach Laura Harvey says she has leaned on artificial intelligence (AI) service ChatGPT to help inspire her tactics in the NWSL this season.
The 45-year-old former Arsenal coach said she casually started testing the chatbot’s women’s soccer knowledge, before quizzing what ideas it might have for individual teams.
“One day in the offseason, I was writing things into ChatGPT like, ‘What is Seattle Reign’s identity?’ And it would spurt it out. And I was like ‘I don’t know if that’s true or not,’” Harvey told the Soccerish Podcast.
“And then I put in, ‘What formation should you play to beat NWSL teams?’ And it spurted out every team in the league and what formation you should play. And for two teams, it went ‘You should play a back five.’ So I did. No joke, that’s why I did it.”
Harvey made the admission after being asked how she had evolved over the course of a two-decade coaching career, but she had never started playing a ‘back five’ of defenders until this season but her coaching team went on a “deep dive” to evaluate its benefits, with the tactical setup used on multiple occasions this term.
“I’d never really done a lot of research on it,” Harvey added of the formation. “I’d never really, like, invested into how it could be played in the women’s game. I’d only ever really seen it from afar, you know, watching men’s games really.
“It was always sort of talked about as a way to see games out. You know, (you go ahead) and get into a back five and stop people from scoring, was sort of how, like, a back five had been talked about for me.”
With one match remaining in the regular season, the Reign are fourth in the 14-team NWSL, in a play-off spot, with 10 wins from 25 matches. This marks a vast improvement from last season, when they finished 13th.
Harvey, who previously coached the Reign between 2013 and 2017, rejoined the club in 2021. The Brit has won three NWSL Shields with Seattle and The Women’s Cup in 2022.
