The San Francisco 49ers will host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. PT.

The 49ers are three-point spread favorites and the game total is 42.5 points.

The Niners beat the Rams 30-23 on September 17. Los Angeles controlled the time of possession but QB Matthew Stafford’s two turnovers were costly. San Francisco rushed for 159 yards on 28 carries (5.7 YPC) and never coughed up the football, allowing it to overcome poor execution on third down (2-for-9).

This Sunday’s Rams-Niners game will be meaningless for the Niners, which is why we’re going to see Carson Wentz battle Sam Darnold. No, we haven’t time-traveled back to 2019! With these teams potentially lined up to see each other in the playoffs, don’t expect either coaching staff to show their cards, so to speak. In other words, vanilla offensive play calling is likely.

That said, LA has more to play for on Sunday. The Niners have already locked up the top seed in the NFC and the Rams want to avoid falling to the seventh seed, which would likely pit them against the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round. With Christian McCaffrey and a slew of other 49ers starters sitting out, Los Angeles has the upper hand. SF’s conservative approach will lead to a Rams win.

Prediction: Los Angeles ML

I expect there to be more scoring than others anticipate in Sunday’s Rams-Niners game. While not the most attractive matchup, Wentz vs. Darnold pits two experienced ex-starting quarterbacks eager to prove they can still sling the pigskin. While the play-calling will be vanilla, these former first-round draft picks will give it their all.

Darnold should have enough success against the Rams’ pass defense (24th in passing yards allowed) to keep the score close. San Francisco doesn’t have its full arsenal of playmakers available for Sunday’s California clash, but Los Angeles is still making Puka Nacua available to play with two rookie receiving records within his grasp. No, this won’t be an offensive clinic, but I expect both starting QBs to take care of the football. Wentz and Darnold have been through the wringer, so they will aim to please, but they won’t be super overeager, either. If anything, expect both to play loose and have some fun out there.

Mother’s Day Gamethread: Giants vs. Pirates

Happy Mother’s Day to all the McCoven who hopefully have better things to do than watch this dreadful baseball team. But if this is your chosen way of spending the day, then welcome, and may the Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates to win the series for you.

Right-hander Tyler Mahle takes the mound for the Giants, as the veteran makes his eighth start of the year. He’s 1-4 on the season, with a 5.00 ERA, a 4.91 FIP, and 34 strikeouts to 18 walks in 36 innings. He was very strong his last time out, pitching 5.1 shutout innings against the Tampa Bay Rays.

For the Pirates, it’s right-hander Bubba Chandler, a 23-year old in his second season. In seven starts this year, Chandler is 1-4 with a 4.76 ERA, a 5.60 FIP, and 31 strikeouts to 26 walks in 34 innings. Chandler gave up two runs in five innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks in his last game. He has issued the most walks in the Major Leagues, so he’s probably foaming at the mouth to face the Giants, who apparently believe that drawing walks is a sin on par with murder.

Enjoy the game, everyone. Go Giants! Go moms!
