Just in time for summer getaway planning purposes, Vrbo this week released its list of 2023 vacation homes of the year. The “Today” show marked the announcement with a segment on the May 16 episode of the 3rd Hour of “Today,” in which co-host Dylan Dryer visited Lake Norman, North Carolina, site of one of the top homes chosen by the online vacation rental site.

But Oregonians might be more interested in another property on the Vrbo 2023 vacation homes of the year list. “The Contemporary Gem,” as Vrbo calls it, is in Manzanita, on the Oregon coast. Described as “a modern architectural masterpiece that feels like it’s floating among the trees,” the house has floor-to-ceiling windows that provide views of Neahkahnie Beach. The home, according to the Vrbo listing, is 3400 square feet in size, has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a deck with ocean views, and a hot tub.

This Manzanita house, named one of Vrbo’s 2023 vacation homes of the year, has views of the Pacific Ocean.

How much is all this? The Vrbo listing says the house rents for an average price of $1,250 per night. That might sound a bit steep, but rates for some of the other Vrbo 2023 vacation homes of the year are more. The house in Lake Norman, North Carolina, for example, is called “Chasetone,” goes for an average price of $5,099 per night.

According to Vrbo, the 2023 vacation homes of the year made the grade because of “stellar” star ratings, “rave guest reviews,” they’re owned or managed by a “Premier Host,” and they offer standout amenities and spaces.

In addition to Manzanita, the top 10 U.S. homes are located in Palm Springs, California; Phoenix, Arizona; Lake Norman, North Carolina; Montauk, New York; Dripping Springs, Texas; Rosemary Beach, Florida; Isle of Palms, South Carolina; Victor, Idaho; and Winter Park, Colorado.

This year, Vrbo also included an international bonus, a home in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Mexico is, according to Vrbo, “one of the most popular destinations for U.S. travelers.”

Another Northwest destination received some Vrbo love on the May 16 “Today” show segment. Melanie Fish, a travel expert with Vrbo, said a hot trend this year involves urban travel. “This is the summer of the city getaway,” Fish said, adding that Seattle — “the weather’s great, wonderful place to go as a family” –was high on the list of 2023 summer vacation destinations.
