Portland State player has ‘ear ripped off’ in 74-point loss to Oregon

The pain of Portland State being blown out 81-7 by Oregon went beyond the scoreboard.

One player of the FCS school had his ear ripped off – yes, you read that right – during the beatdown, according to head coach Bruce Barnum.

Here’s Barnum with the grizzly details.

“We’re fine. Knock on wood, we had one guy get his ear ripped off,” Barnum told “The Bald Faced Truth.”

“They sewed it back on, and now they say he has a concussion. So, he’s out. But I think he’s fine. He talked to me today.”

Barnum later clarified the player lost “not the whole ear, but a partial ear detachment.”

“I think it was from when we got his helmet knocked off and I think his ear didn’t come out of his helmet,” Barnum said. “They were sewing him up. I guess that means you have a concussion. And we’re making sure he’s fine, and he’ll sit out this game.”

It’s hard to think of a worse day for a collegiate football player from Week 1.

The overmatched Vikings fell behind 22-7 in the first quarter, 50-7 at halftime and 67-7 entering the third quarter. Oregon scored the final points of the game.

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns, while four Ducks had at least one rushing score. Jordan James found the end zone three times in his 86-yard performance.

Troy Franklin (seven catches, 106 yards) and Gary Bryant Jr. (seven catches, 100 yards) each caught two scores.

Oregon’s 81-point showing meant The Duck mascot had to perform 546 push-ups.

Portland State quarterback Dante Chachere completed just 5 of 14 passes for 35 yards and one touchdown, and no Vikings player had more than 17 yards receiving.

Chacere also led the team with 53 rushing yards on six carries.

Thankfully for Portland State, it has an easier game this week when they travel to face Wyoming on Saturday.

It’s hard to imagine things going much worse, both on the scoreboard and physically, than it did in the visit to Eugene.
