Oregon State Takes Third at Pac-12 Championships – Oregon State University Athletics
DEXTER LAKE, Ore. – Oregon State battled three top-10 teams and emerged with a third-place team finish at the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday.
The Beavs totaled 47 points to Stanford’s 42 to earn third. Cal won the competition with 72 points while Washington earned 65 for second.
“Getting 3rd place as a team at the Pac-12 championships is pretty big. The Frosh, 3V and the Varsity 4+ can have those medals forever. We have more speed to be gained, though. I think the Varsity and JV have not hit their full potential yet. We shall see in the next couple of weeks,” Oregon State head coach Gabe Winkler said.
The Freshman 8+ boat put together another promising performance to open the day, though it finished third to more experienced boats from top-ranked California and no. 3 Washington. The Beavs finished in 6:26.73 in choppy waters with the wind whipping through Dexter Lake
In the second race of the day, Oregon State hung with the higher-ranked Bears and Huskies but they weren’t able to maintain it for the full two kilometers, placing third. OSU’s Varsity 4 struggled to keep up with Cal and Washington, also placing third.
Stanford joined the fray for the 2V8. OSU kept pace with the eighth-ranked Cardinal for much of the race, falling off just between 500 and 1,000 meters and finishing 11 seconds behind Stanford for fourth.
OSU’s Varsity 8 closed the championships with a fourth-place finish, struggling to keep up with the three top-10 teams it was facing.
Oregon State will learn its postseason fate on Tuesday when the IRA announces its championship field.
