Oregon State 24th at NCAA women’s golf as Amanda Minni, Chayse Gomez shoot second-round 71s

Oregon State women’s golf improved its scoring during Saturday’s second round but remain in a sizable hole to make the 54-hole cut at NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Beavers, making their first NCAA tourney appearance since 1998, shot a second-round 5-over 293 at Grayhawk Golf Club. Chayse Gomez and Amanda Minni both carded 1-under 71s to lead OSU.

Oregon State is 24th of 30 teams at 14-over 590. The Beavers must improve to 15th or better after Sunday’s third round to make the cut. Duke is currently 15th at 8-over, six strokes ahead of Oregon State.

Wake Forest leads the tournament at 17-under, two shots ahead of Stanford.

Gomez mixed four birdies with three bogeys for her 71. Gomez, at 2-under 142, is tied for 24th in the 156-player field. Minni had three birdies and two bogeys enroute to a 71. The OSU senior is tied for 77th at 4-over through 36 holes.

Oregon State’s other second-round counting scores were a 75 by Madde Sund and 76 by Danique Stokmans. Freshman Kyra Ly shot a non-counting 81.

Wake Forest’s Lauren Walsh has the 36-hole individual lead at 10-under 134. Walsh shot a pair of 67s to lead USC’s Catherine Park by one stroke.

Oregon State begins play at 12:15 p.m. Sunday. The Beavers are paired with players from Mississippi State and Texas Tech.
