Nevada politicians react to apparent assassination attempt on former president
National and local politicians shared their reactions after the FBI announced the agency is investigating “what appears to be an attempted assassination” on former President Donald Trump.
A U.S. Secret Service agent discovered the muzzle of an AK-style rifle poking out of a bush at a golf course at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club in Palm Beach, Florida.
The agent discovered the suspect, identified as Ryan Routh, a couple of holes ahead of where Trump was playing.
The agent fired and then Routh fled in an SUV, leaving behind an AK-style rifle, two backpacks and GoPro camera.
The alleged second assassination attempt comes after Trump was shot at a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe,” Vice President Kamala Harris tweeted Sunday afternoon.
Harris also stated that violence had no place in America, a notion reiterated by Harris’ vice presidential pick, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
“Gwen and I are glad to hear that Donald Trump is safe. Violence has no place in our country. It’s not who we are as a nation,” Walz said in an X post.
Trump’s vice presidential pick, JD Vance, tweeted on X that he was glad and grateful that Trump is safe.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with President Trump and his family following the alarming event that unfolded at President Trump’s West Palm Beach Golf Course earlier today,” the Nevada GOP Party shared in a statement on its X account.
U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto, D-Nev., expressed gratitude for law enforcement officials’ quick response.
“Political violence can never be tolerated in our democracy, and I look forward to the suspect being brought to justice,” Cortez-Masto wrote on X.
“I am relieved to hear that President Trump is safe following reports of shots fired near him today. Political violence is never the answer and has no place in our democracy,” Sen. Jacky Rosen stated on X.
The Nevada senator is running for re-election against Republican Senate nominee Sam Brown.
Brown said he was grateful for Trump’s safety and honored to be at his rally in Las Vegas on Friday.
“We continue to pray for his protection and the future of our nation,” Brown shared on his X account.
Routh has been taking in custody and the FBI is investigating to determine Routh’s motive.

California snow advisory for Sierra Nevada is earliest in 20 years
People traveling through the Sierra Nevada should make alternate route in case there are road closures, according to the National Weather Service.
California issued its earliest snow advisory in the past 20 years with an alert early this week for residents in the Sierra Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.
From Sunday to Monday, areas of the Sierra Nevada above 8,000 feet can expect some snow as a trough, a region of low atmospheric pressure, brings between a 35% to 65% probability of 2 inches of snow or more.
“We have a very cold draft moving into the area this afternoon and evening, and [it] will move through on Monday,” JP Kalb, a forecaster with weather service, told USA TODAY.
The trough will also bring rain to the San Joaquin Valley.
The winter advisory will remain in effect from 11 p.m. local time Sunday night to 5 p.m. Monday.

Slick roads
California’s State Road 120 passes through the Tioga Pass, an area near Yosemite National Park that is expected to receive more snow than other areas, according to the weather service. It is one of the main roads that leads to the park.
There is a 40% chance it will receive 3 inches of snow or more.
The pass, which is 231 miles east of San Francisco, is at an elevation of 9,943 feet in the Sierra Nevada and usually closes in the winter due to snowfall.
Visitors in areas of Yosemite National Park could experience snow as well.
Those traveling through the Sierra Nevada this week should have alternate plans in case of closures. People driving through the Valley should watch for slick roads.
Yosemite National Park will make the decision on whether to close SR 120, David Spector, a weather service meteorologist, told USA TODAY.
Second chance of snow later this week
There is another 40% chance the Tioga Pass will see 3 inches or more of snow from Wednesday to Thursday as a second trough moves into the area.
California Wildfires won’t be affected
Southern California is coping with several wildfires. However, they will not be impacted or lessened by the rain.
“Most of the wildfires are well South of where we have the advisory,” said Kalb.
The weather service forecasts the precipitation will be 33% to 40% below average. Last year was slightly below average.
Despite the early snow advisory, the weather service forecasts that the Missouri River Basin Drought, which is affecting areas of northern and southern California, could continue to worsen through September.

RGJ’s Jason Hidalgo named Nevada Press Association’s Outstanding Journalist for 2024
Reno Gazette Journal business and investigative reporter Jason Hidalgo has been named the Nevada Press Association’s Outstanding Journalist for 2024.
Hidalgo is a 25-year veteran watchdog reporter whose work regularly sheds light on mismanagement, shady dealings, government overreach and dysfunction with an eye toward how powerful interests exert their influence.
In addition to Outstanding Journalist, Hidalgo placed first in the NPA contest’s political-government-enterprise reporting category. His series on the Washoe County Regional Transportation Commission examined its leadership currying favor with private interests in drafting the plan to improve downtown transportation.
He won second place in health reporting for coverage of DaVita closing the only dialysis center in Winnemucca, forcing some families to make a 4-hour round trip for care.
Hidalgo took home the silver in arts and culture commentary for his Technobubble columns on gaming and technology.
And he won third place in coverage of underserved communities for examining a wide range of issues at the Muslim section of one of Reno’s oldest cemeteries. His reporting also revealed a divide within the local Muslim community and its leadership..
RGJ staff awards in 2024 Nevada Press Association contest
Siobhan McAndrew brought home four awards. They include a first place in news obituaries and third place in feature writing for a powerful story on a daughter’s search for her homeless mother ending tragically on the streets of Reno.
She took second place in sports feature writing for a heart-warmer on the Billinghurst Middle School cheer team.
McAndrew and Jim Krajewski shared third place for a co-bylined story in the sports spot news category. They interviewed the Bishop Manogue girls basketball coach who claimed she was fired after the school president warned her against giving too much playing time to “brown kids.” The president ended up resigning after the issue was brought to light.
Mark Robison took home third place in investigative reporting for his work on a soldier who died after she was kicked out of the Nevada National Guard in the wake of reporting an alleged rape.
Robison also won third place in breaking news for his reporting on a Rottweiler shot at dog park.
Photographer Jason Bean won second place for a feature photo of a man trying on outfits ahead of Burning Man, third for a photo gallery of Burners trying to get off the muddy playa and third for a portrait of Downtown Reno Partnership Ambassador David Papaleo.
The awards were presented Saturday at the annual NPA convention held at the Depot in downtown Reno.
Eight inducted into Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame
Eight journalists who had a lasting impact in Nevada were inducted into the Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Among the inductees are Reno Gazette Journal reporter Guy Clifton, who died Sept. 7. The veteran journalist was renowned for his coverage of the Reno Rodeo, and published a number of books including the “You Know You’re a Nevadan If …” series.
The other inductees are:
Laura Tennant, who has served the rural communities of Fernley, Dayton and Yerington for four decades as a reporter, editor and columnist.
Guy Rocha, Nevada state archivist whose column in the Reno Gazette Journal informed residents of the rich past of their hometown;
Steve Ranson, editor emeritus of the Lahontan Valley News in Fallon;
The late University of Nevada, Reno journalism professor, mentor and journalist Jake Highton;
Frank McCulloch, a Vietnam war correspondent who led major American news organizations
Mary Hausch, journalism professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for 25 years, specializing in media ethics and reporting;
Former Las Vegas Review-Journal Managing Editor Charles Zobell, who sadly died at age 74 just days before he was to be inducted;
And the late Bill Hughes, a noted photojournalist with the Las Vegas Review Journal.
The eight were honored at a lunch ceremony during the organizations’ convention Saturday in Reno.
