Broncos Get Concerning Update on Chargers Injured QB Justin Herbert
The Denver Broncos are riding a three-game win streak with another AFC West tilt on deck. The Los Angeles Chargers — coming off a bye — are next on the docket, and the Broncos are closely monitoring quarterback Justin Herbert’s status.
Herbert suffered a high-ankle sprain to his right foot in Week 2 and reportedly re-aggravated it the following game. In the Chargers’ Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, he wore an ankle brace.
Returning to practice on Monday following L.A.’s bye, Herbert was seen with that same ankle brace on his right leg, per ESPN‘s Kris Rhim.

Herbert is tough, and for now, there’s no reason to doubt his availability for Sunday’s tilt vs. the Broncos. But it’s a situation we’ll continue to keep an eye on here at Mile High Huddle.
On the season, Herbert has started all four games for the Jim Harbaugh-led Chargers, passing for just 578 yards and five touchdowns, with one interception. Herbert’s stats are down, whether that’s due to Harbaugh’s offensive vision for the Chargers, or the injury — or a combination of both.
Vance Joseph’s defense will test Herbert’s mobility early and often. The Broncos are one of the most blitz-happy defenses in the NFL. It can be argued that Denver is fielding the NFL’s best defense right now, and one of its hallmarks is pressure — both of the manufactured kind and of the effort variety.
The Broncos are led by rush linebacker Jonathon Cooper’s four sacks, but defensive end Zach Allen has three sacks and the second-most QB pressures in the NFL through five weeks. Herbert’s wherewithal will be put to the test.
We’ll post additional updates on Herbert’s ankle as the week of practice marches on. For now, though, he’s looking like a go for Week 6, even if he is slightly diminished.
It’ll be fun to see how the first iteration of the Bo Nix vs. Herbert throwdown shakes out. The first one will take place in front of the Mile High faithful on Sunday.

1 killed in Denver commercial structure fire in RiNo district
One person was killed in an early morning fire in Denver’s River North district on Tuesday and now arson investigators and fire marshalls are working to determine the cause.
The Denver Fire Department initially said no injuries were reported just after 7 a.m. but around 7:30 a.m., DFD said one person was confirmed to have died in that fire, which is now under control.
The exact address of the fire wasn’t immediately clear but DFD says it was near 36th Street Wazee Streets.
The area includes several apartment buildings and businesses including Bigsby’s Folly Craft Winery and Restaurant, Pesto Italiano and the RiNo Sports Arena.
A DFD spokesman said the presence of arson investigators doesn’t necessarily mean the fire was human-caused, but those investigators respond to most structure fires.

Donald Trump announces Aurora campaign rally at Gaylord Rockies
Former President Donald Trump will speak at a rally at Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center in Aurora on Friday afternoon, his presidential campaign announced late Monday.
The Republican presidential nominee talked about Aurora’s recent problems with blighted apartment complexes and the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua during a New York campaign rally in September.
Trump again invoked Aurora, falsely claiming violent immigrants were taking over the city, during a nationally televised debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.
Aurora city and police officials have acknowledged isolated gang activity but said claims that the city is overrun by Tren de Aragua are not true.
Aurora police have publicly identified 10 gang members charged in more than a dozen criminal incidents in recent months.
Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, will also be in Colorado this week and is set to attend a fundraising dinner in Denver on Tuesday.
Rally tickets are available online. Doors open at 10 a.m. and Trump is scheduled to begin speaking at 1 p.m.

Dead leaf, pumpkin drop-off recycling program opens in Denver
Wondering what to do with your piles of dead leaves and rotting pumpkins this fall? Recycle them with Denver’s annual LeafDrop program.
The LeafDrop program turns those leaves and pumpkins into compost instead of allowing them to end up in the landfill, according to Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
City officials said people can drop off their expired fall vegetation to select collection centers between Monday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Nov. 30. The following locations are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
- Cherry Creek Transfer Station at 7301 East Jewell Ave.;
- Havana Nursery at 10450 Smith Road; and
- Central Platte Campus at 1271 West Bayaud Ave..
The Cherry Creek Transfer Station is the only site that accepts loose leaves and hitched trailers, city officials said Monday. Otherwise, leaves should be bagged.
Weekend drop sites will be open from Nov. 2 to Nov. 17 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., city officials said. The November weekend locations include:
- Cherry Creek Transfer Station at 7301 East Jewell Ave.;
- Bruce Randolph High School at East 40th Avenue and Steele Street;
- Kennedy High School at Newland Street and Brown Place;
- Sloan’s Lake northwest parking lot at West Byron Place and Yates Street; and
- Veterans Park at South Vine Street and East Iowa Ave.
When preparing to recycle fall trash, city officials said people should not:
- Include branches or other materials in leaf bags;
- Use twine or staples to secure paper leaf bags, just roll and crimp them;
- Rake or blow leaves into the streets; they can clog storm sewer inlets and street sweepers.
Current city compost customers can put leaves and pumpkins in their compost cart, city officials said.
