Colorado teen killed ‘car surfing,’ cops issue warning against social media challenge
A Colorado teen has been killed in a rollover crash while “car surfing,” prompting authorities this week to warn against the dangerous social media challenge.
The 16-year-old passenger, whose name has not been released, had been hanging out the car window when the accident occurred on Quarry Road in Douglas County, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.
The teen was critically injured in the May 5 crash and later pronounced dead.
Authorities were called to five other incidents of car surfing — riding on the outside of a moving vehicle — in the days before and after the teen’s death, the sheriff’s office said.
The office shared one particularly harrowing clip from April 17 of two young people seated on the sun roof of a car traveling over 55 miles per hour at night.
A photo from a separate event shows an individual seated on the rim of a car’s rear window.
“It is crucial to understand this activity is incredibly dangerous, and the consequences can be fatal,” the warning read.
“No thrill or adrenaline rush is worth sacrificing your life or the lives of your friends or family members.”
Officials encouraged motorists to report any car surfing directly to the police, and warned that participants could face serious criminal charges if caught.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of each and every one of you. Please remember to stay safe, make responsible choices, and encourage others to do the same. We need to work together to prevent further tragedies,” Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said.
