North Carolina hiker dies at Grand Canyon National Park during solo trek, believed to be 6th fatality in weeks

A 60-year-old North Carolina man was found dead in Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park on Wednesday after embarking on a solo hike, park officials said.

The backpacker, whose name was not released publicly, was located on a rugged and remote trail along the Colorado River that connects the Lower Tapeats and Deer Creek camps, the National Park Service (NPS) said.

He had set off on a solo multi-day backpacking trip from Thunder River to Deer Creek, and was reported missing on Tuesday after failing to check in with a family member, according to NPS.

NPS and the Coconino County Medical Examiner are investigating the incident. No further details were immediately available.

The hiker is believed to be the sixth person to die at the park in less than a month and the 14th this year. Park officials reported 11 fatalities in 2023 and said there are usually about 10 to 15 deaths per year.

Authorities detained 17 people near an Orange County school during an operation targeting reported drug use and sales.

Anaheim Police said suspects were spotted at La Palma Park in Anaheim which has negatively impacted a charter school located across the street.

The operation was conducted by Homeless Liaison Officers who directed enforcement and outreach services to the reported areas.

On Aug. 31, police responded to the park and detained 17 people. Seven people were arrested on various charges. Five others were provided detox and housing services and a woman who was eight months pregnant was transported to the hospital for care and housing.

All leftover debris was removed by Lyons Security and the area will be cleaned by public works crewmembers.

Two people, who were found passed out in a vehicle, were arrested for narcotics violations. Their truck was impounded and the area was cleared of all debris.

“It was a great team effort to enforce the law while showing compassion and offering services in addition to the legal process,” Anaheim Police said.
