'You don't have rights, you're Mexican': Southern California man arrested for alleged hate crime, sexual battery

A 32-year-old Orange County man is facing possible hate crime charges after he reportedly grabbed a woman by the buttocks with both hands inside of a store and made a comment about her ethnicity.

The Nov. 8 incident, according to a news release from the Westminster Police Department, occurred at around 7:45 a.m. at a retail outlet in the 13500 block of Beach Boulevard.

Police said the victim, a 43-year-old Garden Grove woman, entered the store and walked into the laundry aisle. She told investigators that when she bent down, the suspect, now identified as Westminster resident Aaron Navies, assaulted her.

“The victim alleged when she reached down to pick up an item, the arrestee without provocation and against her will grabbed her buttocks with both hands,” the release stated. “The victim immediately stood up, threw an item at Navies and backed away. Navies told the victim, ‘You don’t have rights because you’re Mexican and I can do what I want to.’”

Authorities added that when the woman, disgusted, began speaking Spanish, Navies “stuck his tongue out and moved it up and down in what she perceived as sexual in nature.”

The Garden Grove woman immediately called police, who located him inside the store and detained him without incident.

After collecting evidence and speaking to both parties, authorities confirmed that the victim wanted to press charges and arrested Navies for a hate crime and sexual battery.

“The Westminster Police Department does not tolerate hate crimes,” the release noted. “If you or someone you know believe you may be the victim of a hate crime, please contact your local law enforcement agency for resources and assistance.”

While authorities said this appears to be an isolated incident, anyone with information about the investigation is urged to contact Westminster PD investigators at 714-898-3315. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call the Orange County Crime Stoppers Hotline at 855-TIP-OCCS or leave tips online at www.occrimestoppers.org.

Dodgers meet with Juan Soto but will they land the all-star slugger?

The Los Angeles Dodgers met with four-time all-star Juan Soto this week but unless the market changes the defending World Series champs may have a tough time signing the coveted free agent, KTLA’s David “Ping” Pingalore reports.

“I can confirm through sources that @juansoto25_ did meet with Andrew Friedman and Brandon Gomes in Orange County today,” Ping posted on his Instagram account Tuesday.

Soto is the most sought-after slugger in the free agent market with other big-payroll teams like the New York Yankees (Soto’s most recent club) and the New York Mets expected to engage in a bidding war to land the outfielder who cracked 41 homers and knocked in 109 RBI while recording a .288 batting average in 2024.

The Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies are also expected to take a shot at Soto but Ping says Los Angeles may be hampered by a hesitancy to offer a long-term deal.

“According to sources if the market weakens the @dodgers interest would only be a 1-2 year deal as Soto seeks a long-term deal for 600m,” Ping posted.

The Dodgers are very familiar with what Soto can offer a team’s offense after facing him as a member of the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres in the National League.

Soto also played well in the World Series against the Dodgers. Despite the Yankees losing in five games Soto batted .313 and hit a home run in Game 2.

South Pasadena woman fatally stabbed by grandson, police say

A South Pasadena woman whose body discovered by her grandchildren in June had been fatally stabbed by another of her grandkids, police said.

Susan Miller, 75, was stabbed to death on June 4 in the 800 block of Brent Avenue, and it was her adult grandchildren who found her while conducting a wellness check, authorities said.

On Wednesday, however, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced that Miller’s grandson, Birkamjot Padda, is one of two men charged with first-degree murder and burglary in her death, the other being Josh Atkins.

Padda and Atkins did not appear in a search of jail records, and officials did not provide their ages, custody statuses or future court dates.
