LAX experiencing traffic nightmare following morning construction

Los Angeles International Airport is experiencing “significant” traffic congestion that could cause flight delays amid construction-induced road closures around the area on Sunday morning.

In a post to X, formerly Twitter, LAX urged travelers to arrive early for their flights to help with traffic concerns.

“We are anticipating increased traffic congestion at LAX,” the airport said. “Guests are encouraged to arrive early, pre-book parking and use Cell Phone Waiting Lots to help with vehicle traffic.”

At 12:47 p.m., the airport said there could be some impacts to flight times.

The airport’s traffic map showed significant delays throughout the various terminals. Social media users and KTLA 5 viewers reported that travelers were exiting vehicles with their bags and walking to the terminals from city streets.

“Absolutely horrendous traffic,” said X user David Barnett. “More than an hour to go 1/2 mile. People walking with bags for miles. Flights being missed. Disgraceful.”

As of 11:20 a.m. Sunday, the LAX Daily Traffic Guide estimated the following travel times to Terminal 1.

405 Fwy-La Tijera-Sepulveda to Upper Level 52 min.
Howard Hughes to Upper Level 42 min.
105 Fwy to Upper Level 13 min.
La Cienega to Upper Level 52 min.
Lincoln to Upper Level 53 min.
Lincoln-Manchester to Upper Level 61 min.
Manchester to Upper Level 38 min.

Those estimates were each about 40 minutes more than the usual morning times, with an exception for the 105 Freeway to the Upper Level.

The likely cause for the massive traffic jam could be tied to construction of the airport’s planned Automated People Mover transit system, which is set to open next year.

Road closures caused by construction, although planned to be wrapped up by 7 a.m. according to LAX, appeared to still be in place as of 11:20 according to Google Maps. Those closures included Century Boulevard’s eastbound lanes between Sepulveda and Airport boulevards and the westbound lanes between Airport and Vicksburg Avenue.
