“Extraordinarily coordinated” theft crews
LAPD observed a spike in these kinds of violent robberies between September and October, with detectives seeing a sample: automobiles of a number of armed suspects had been working in a coordinated effort to rob victims of their high-end vehicles or jewellery, in response to police.
Tippet stated investigators reviewing video surveillance of the robberies observed that the crews are “extraordinarily coordinated.”
The robbers are oftentimes in touch with one another, typically with “spotters” inside companies anticipating victims and letting crew members outdoors know who to regulate, the captain defined.
A number of automobiles are sometimes concerned, with robbers popping out of the vehicles in massive teams, often armed.
Tippet stated that most of the robberies begin off violently, with attackers not permitting time for the victims to adjust to calls for for his or her watches or jewellery.
A complete of 51 of those violent armed robberies had been recognized in that two-month interval between September and October.
LAPD seeing resurgence after robberies lower for a number of months
Usually, LAPD would attempt to establish everybody concerned earlier than making an attempt to take down crews. However “because of the disaster,” investigators beginning working in another way, the captain stated.
Police made fast arrests as quickly as suspects had been recognized, and used the data they bought from search warrants and interviews to seek out different crew members.
LAPD says this technique helped disrupt the crews and, for some time, diminished the variety of robberies on L.A.’s streets.
L.A. went from a excessive of 26 of those robberies throughout a two-week interval in November, to seven throughout the newest two-week interval, in response to the captain.
“We had some months the place the speed dropped fairly a bit and we began engaged on the follow-up,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore stated.
However there was a “resurgence” in latest days, Moore added.
Within the 48 hours earlier than Tuesday, 5 further incidents had been reported. Considered one of them concerned robbers placing a lady with a automotive as she tried to run away from them whereas they chased her to take her watch.
Are gangs working collectively?
As of April, the LAPD process drive has recognized a complete of 221 “follow-home” or “follow-off” robberies within the metropolis of Los Angeles, Tippet informed commissioners.
And it doesn’t seem like one coordinated effort.
“These gangs are from the South Los Angeles space and lots of of them are rivals from totally different sects, indicating that they’re not working collectively,” Tippet stated.
LAPD has positioned surveillance cameras all through the town to attempt discover the robbers, and served dozens of search warrants, seizing a complete of 45 weapons from suspects.
“This has been a serious endeavor, nonetheless, I’m assured that we’re slowing this development down,” Tippet stated.
Have there been arrests?
The follow-home theft process drive has to this point made dozens of arrests, together with 4 on suspicion of homicide and 6 for tried homicide.
However in some instances, theft suspects are launched from custody, solely to participate in additional robberies, in response to police.
In a single case, a theft suspect named Cheyenne Hale was arrested in reference to a violent armed theft in downtown L.A. that concerned a sufferer who was tackled to the bottom earlier than a gaggle of males strip him of his watch and depart him mendacity within the gutter, in response to police.

One other suspect, Matthew Adams, was arrested on suspicion of theft then launched on bond in January. Now, he’s in custody once more in reference to one other seven robberies, in response to police.
The way to defend your self
Tippet stated a number of the robberies are occurring between midnight and 4 a.m., however there have been robberies occurring in broad daylight, too.
“It’s simply people which are prepared to do brazen robberies in the course of downtown L.A. in daylight. So you possibly can’t even say anymore to not to not exit late at night time,” Tippet stated.
Chief Moore stated the brazen and conceited nature of the crimes “shocks ones senses.”
“Be aware of your environment and be aware that at the moment — not like earlier earlier intervals within the final 5 or 10 years — you’re being focused. You’re being focused by people who discover a prepared market within the Web to resell these items.”
Listed here are some extra suggestions from LAPD about defending your self from so-called follow-home robbers:
- Watch out whereas out with seen costly jewellery.
- Touring in teams and remaining in well-lit areas can assist deter robbers.
- At all times pay attention to your environment and take note of these round you.
- After purchasing, make it a behavior to take a unique route residence and take note of automobiles and pedestrians behind you.
- If you happen to assume you’re being adopted, change your route and name the police.
- If approached by a robber, particularly if the individual has a firearm, the division encourages victims not to withstand. “No property is definitely worth the danger of lack of life,” LAPD says.

Ditch typing and note-taking – try these apps

The future of voice to text is here.
I’ve been testing a variety of tools that make taking notes, transcribing audio, and even voice typing faster and easier than ever.
If you have a smartphone, you’re already halfway there!
Google’s Pixel Recorder app is free and built into their smartphone. It’s excellent for transcribing meetings, lectures, and conversations – all in real time.
Apple’s Voice Memos App recently added transcriptions if you’re upgraded to iOS 18.
Samsung’s Voice recorder app now offers transcripts too – as long as you’re on their latest One UI 7 software. (Check Settings > About Phone > Software Information)
Got an older phone? Try Otter.AI. It works great for transcriptions across devices and you get 300 minutes a month free.
Don’t want to tie up your phone?
I’ve been testing AI-powered digital audio recorders from a startup named Plaud.
The Plaud Note is thin, records for hours, and can even clip to the back of your phone to record calls. Just make sure you know your local laws before using that feature.
The Plaud Pin can be clipped to your shirt or worn on your wrist for hands-free recording.
Both devices sync audio to a companion app that auto transcribes and summarizes.
You get five hours of transcription a month included, with options to pay for more.
Pricing for each gadget starts around $160 dollars.
Want to transcribe audio files on your computer?
My favorite Mac app is MacWhisper. You can even get it completely free – although paid versions are avaialble with more features and options.
On Windows, check out Vibe Transcribe, also free.
And for a web-based option, Whisper Web gets the job done.
Finally, if you want to type less and talk more… there’s an excellent AI voice-to-text app called Wispr Flow. It was previously Mac only but just became avaialble for Windows, too.
One you install it, you pick a hotkey. Then, instead of typing just press and hold down that key and dictate what you want to write.
Since it uses the power of AI, you can even stumble or ramble and it will clean up your words and get the punctionation right.
It’s a gamechanger for responding to emails fast! You get 2,000 words free each week with options to pay for more.
Enjoy your newfound time!

Algal bloom sickening marine mammals off Southern California 'will only get worse'

A toxic algal bloom leaving an increasing number of marine mammals stranded along Southern California beaches shows no signs of subsiding and “will only get worse,” officials said Monday.
“This week, we saw more stranded dolphins (both alive and deceased) than we saw during the major domoic acid (DA) bloom in 2023,” Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) Los Angeles posted on Facebook.
Recent tests showed DA-producing algae levels have increased, and officials believe that trend will continue in the coming weeks. “We anticipate that it will only get worse,” the post read.
MMCC asked the public not to approach sick dolphins or sea lions on the beach because they can become aggressive upon awakening from a seizure.
“This is a safety issue for people and their pets as much as it is for the marine mammals,” officials said.
Beachgoers were also urged not to push stranded dolphins back into the water, saying it can reduce their chances of survival.
More information about domoic-acid poisoning can be found at https://marinemammalcare.org/domoic-acid/.
The volume of sick marine mammals has also had a financial impact on the MMCC.
“Our team is working heroically to respond to every call and to rescue every animal they can. Please share this post and give now at marinemammalcare.org/donate to give these marine mammals a second chance at life!” the MMCC stated.
Anyone who encounters a sick or stranded marine mammal can alert the nearest lifeguard and call 1-800-39-WHALE to make a report.
