L.A. Metro skewered for AI-generated Dodger Dog art

LA Metro’s attempt to capitalize on the Dodgers’ World Series hoopla is going sideways on social media.

On Friday, just hours before the start of Game One, the public transit agency posted an AI-generated comic book-style image on X, formerly Twitter, depicting a Dodger Dog and Dodgers fans riding a New York subway.

The caption reads, “Gotham subway next week,” with a series of emojis.

“For those keeping score at home, the ask of AI was: Create a funny illustration of a Dodger Dog riding the New York subway to Yankee Stadium for a World Series game,” LA Metro explained in a reply. “and: reviewed by an in-house designer who did question the ability of a hot dog to navigate the byzantine new york subway system. concern vetoed.”

Aside from some AI mishaps with the artwork itself—one Yankees logo says “Dodgers,” and a sign appears to read “Yank Yors” —commenters are criticizing LA Metro for using Artificial Intelligence in the first place.

“Please stop with the AI stuff. Hiring actual artists has historically worked much better for Metro campaigns!” one X user, Ho Chi Rin, replied.

“Love ya, thanks for all ya do for the city. But AI art sucks and steals from hardworking people,” wrote another user, Luis. “Please support artists like you do when it comes to the art at stations and your tap cards. Not like this.”

“Super disappointing that Metro is doubling down on the use of AI-generated images. Aside from AI training on actual artists’ work without their permission or $, it’s gross for a public transit agency to add to the unnecessary energy usage of AI and its environmental impacts,” wrote Tyler.

LA Metro has not responded to the AI complaints. KTLA reached out to the transit agency for comment.

On Thursday, LA Metro posted another AI-generated image of “monster traffic” to highlight the gridlock expected Friday when the World Series coincides with a Lakers game at Crypto.com Arena and a USC football game at the LA Memorial Coliseum, among other events.

The use of generative AI has become a contentious issue in Hollywood. In 2023, both actors and writers went on strike, in part, over fears that AI would eliminate jobs.

In July of this year, video game voice actors and motion-capture performers represented by SAG-AFTRA went on strike over similar concerns.

Pedestrian and motorcyclist killed in Ventura County highway crash

A pedestrian and a motorcyclist were killed in a highway crash in Ventura County early morning Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said officers responded to reports of a crash around 6:05 a.m. on Highway 118 west of Rocky Peak Road in Moorpark.

Officers found an unoccupied car in the center median, and east of the car they found a 33-year-old Canoga Park woman and a 54-year-old Simi Valley man lying in the highway lanes, both deceased.

The victims’ identities are being withheld by CHP pending notification to their families.

According to the preliminary investigation, it’s believed that the woman first crashed her Nissan Altima into the right side guardrail, spinning out of control across all westbound Highway 118 lanes until she crashed into the center median wall.

She then got out of the car and was standing in the first lane when the motorcyclist struck her.

CHP said the force of this crash was so great that it ejected the man from his motorcycle.

Both victims and the motorcycle, a 2020 Triumph Truxton, ended up sprawled across the roadway, west of the crash scene.

No arrests were made and CHP said the involvement of alcohol/drugs is unknown at this time.

The fatal crash closed down the left three lanes of westbound Highway 118 near Rocky Peak Road for about 4 hours, and traffic was redirected through the right lane.

For additional information regarding the deceased, CHP asked people to please contact the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office at 805-641-4400.

The CHP Moorpark Area Office is investigating this crash and encourages any potential witnesses who have not already given their statements to an investigating officer to contact the CHP Moorpark Area Office at 805-553-0800.

Dodgers' Ohtani will play in Game 3 of World Series: report

Los Angeles Dodgers fans, you can exhale now.

The Japanese superstar and near-certain National League MVP, Shohei Ohtani, is good to go for World Series Game 3 after suffering a shoulder injury on Saturday night.

The news comes from ESPN’s Karl Ravech. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told the studio host and play-by-play man that Ohtani is “in a great spot and will be playing in game 3 [Monday].”

Ohtani partially dislocated his left shoulder during the seventh inning of Friday’s 4-2 win over the New York Yankees while sliding into second base on a failed steal attempt. He left the game in obvious pain, but apparently the injury was minor enough for him to return to action Monday.

Perhaps playing into the decision to play is the fact that Ohtani, 30, is purely an offensive player this year. The two-way superstar took this season off from pitching after having surgery on his throwing elbow in the offseason.

The Dodgers and Yankees traveled to New York after Game 2 on Saturday night, where Games 3, 4 and — if necessary — 5 will be played. Game 3 is set to start at 5:08 p.m. PST on Monday.

Homicide investigators identified Diaz and the 17-year-old responsible for Gonzalez’s murder. Due to the 17-year-old’s age, authorities said his name will not be disclosed.

Details are limited. It is not currently known if surveillance or witness testimony aided in this investigation, or whether the suspects were known to the victim.

The sheriff’s office said Diaz was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center for murder, robbery, and conspiracy.

The 17-year-old was booked into juvenile hall for murder, robbery, and conspiracy.

As investigators continue to look into this case, officials ask anyone with information to contact Investigator D. Robertson or Investigator J. Newby at 951–955–2777.
