A second bus chartered on the course of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott arrived within the nation’s capital early Thursday morning, carrying greater than a dozen migrants and signaling Abbott’s frustration with the Biden administration’s immigration insurance policies.

Abbott introduced final week that he was directing the Texas Division of Emergency Administration (TDEM) to start transporting migrants launched from federal custody in Texas to the nation’s capital and different areas exterior of the state.

“To assist native officers, whose communities are being overwhelmed by hoards of unlawful immigrants who’re being dropped off by the Biden administration,” mentioned Gov. Abbott at a press convention, “Texas is offering constitution buses to ship these unlawful immigrants, who’ve been dropped off by the Biden administration, to Washington D.C. We’re sending them to the USA Capitol, the place the Biden administration will be capable of extra instantly tackle the wants of the people who they’re permitting to return throughout our border,” he continued.

As was the case with the primary bus, which arrived yesterday, this one dropped the passengers straight in entrance of an workplace advanced close to the Capitol, and simply throughout the road from Union Station, which homes media organizations akin to NBC, C-SPAN and Fox Information. In every occasion, representatives from Catholic Charities had been readily available to assist the people and households get located.

It’s not clear if what Texas is doing is authorized, since border management and immigration regulation are issues reserved for federal authorities, not states.

Administration officers have characterised the motion as a publicity stunt and say Texas can’t power any of the migrants to board one among their constitution buses.

“They must voluntarily be placed on the bus,” mentioned White Home Press Secretary Jen Psaki Wednesday, “and if there are considerations about that, we’d count on they might contact the suitable authorities.”

Psaki says, in a means, Gov. Abbott helps the administration and said,

“These are all migrants who’ve been processed by CBP and are free to journey, so it is good the state of Texas helps them get to their closing vacation spot as they await the result of their immigration proceedings.”

What is REAL ID?

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. These purposes are:

Accessing certain federal facilities

What happens when the REAL ID enforcement date begins?

Federal agencies, including DHS and TSA, may only accept state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards as identification for purposes of accessing federal facilities – including TSA airport security checkpoints – if the license or card was issued by a REAL ID compliant state in accordance with the REAL ID security standards (meaning the license or card must include the REAL ID compliant star marking).

Real ID also will be required to enter some federal facilities such as military bases.
