Virginia State Police respond to call of shots fired at I-64 rest area


ALBEMARLE COUNTY — Virginia State Police and Albemarle County Police responded Wednesday morning to a rest area on Interstate 64 for an emergency call concerning gunshots being fired, according to state police.

The incident took place at an eastbound rest area near mile marker 105 in Albemarle County.

As of 8:30 a.m., authorities had cleared the facility and found no evidence of a shooting having taken place, police said.

The rest area will be re-opening shortly, police said Wednesday morning.

Charlottesville Selected as Host Site for NCAA Baseball Regionals


CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Disharoon Park will serve as one of the 16 regional host sites for the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. Virginia will host a four-team, double-elimination tournament May 31 – June 4.

Two games will be scheduled for Friday (May 31), Saturday (June 1) and Sunday (June 2). If necessary, a single game will be played Monday (June 3). Regional game times will be announced in the afternoon on Monday (May 27).

The remaining at-large teams, top-eight national seeds and first-round regional pairings will be announced at noon Monday (May 27) on ESPN2. The selection committee will set the entire 64-team bracket through both the regionals and the first round of the Men’s College World Series.

  • Norman, Oklahoma – Oklahoma (37-19)
  • Raleigh, North Carolina – NC State (33-20)
  • Santa Barbara, California – UC Santa Barbara (42-12)
  • Stillwater, Oklahoma – Oklahoma State (40-17)
  • Tallahassee, Florida – Florida State (42-15)
  • Tucson, Arizona – Arizona (36-21)

By virtue of being awarded a regional, all 16 host institutions also have been selected to the 64-team championship field. All 16 regionals are scheduled for Friday, May 31 to Monday, June 3.

Virginia has been a host institution for NCAA Regionals 11 times (2004, 2006, 2007, 2010-2014, 2016, 2023, 2024). The Cavaliers will be part of the NCAA Tournament field for the 21st time overall and 18th under head coach Brian O’Connor.

Regional all-session general admission tickets will go on-sale Monday May 27th at 9 a.m. on UVATix.com. Single session tickets (sessions 1 – 6), if available, will go on-sale later this week. Please note the ticket office will be closed Monday for Memorial Day and reopen on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Daily parking can be purchased online at UVATix.com or upon drive up for spaces in the JPJ South and West Lots $15 in advance or $20 upon drive up. We are sold out of regional all-session parking passes. Spots are first come, first served. Parking passes must be purchased using a valid credit/debit card; cash will not be accepted on site.

Virginia Hosting Charlottesville Regional at 2024 NCAA Baseball Tournament


For the second year in a row and 11th time in program history, Virginia will host a regional in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. UVA was selected on Sunday night as one of 16 schools serving as a regional host site for the 2024 NCAA Baseball Championship.

Virginia (41-15) will make it fourth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 21st appearance in program history. UVA is looking to return to Omaha for the second year in a row and third time in the last four years and make what would be the program’s seventh College World Series appearance.

Virginia will learn its exact overall seed for the NCAA Tournament and the other teams that will be coming to town for the Charlottesville Regional from the selection show on Monday, 27th at 12pm ET on ESPN2.

In the most recent D1Baseball Field of 64 Projections released on Sunday, Virginia is projected to be the No. 10 overall seed in the tournament with West Virginia, VCU, and Pennsylvania joining the Cavaliers for the Charlottesville Regional.

The regional round of the NCAA Tournament begins Friday, May 31st and runs through Monday, June 3rd.

Tragic drowning incident at Virginia lake leaves father, 14-year-old son dead


A man and his 14-year-old son were both pronounced dead Sunday following a tragic drowning incident at Lake Anna in Louisa County. 

According to the Sheriff’s Office, around 1:10 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, deputies and other emergency crews were called to the lake in the area of Carrs Bridge Road for a report of a child drowning.

While on the way, deputies were informed that the child’s father had jumped into the water attempting to rescue his son. Soon after, witnesses saw the 42-year-old dad struggling in the water before losing sight of him shortly after the 14-year-old victim went under. 

Search underway for missing swimmer in Potomac River near Great Falls

Several people went into the water hoping to locate the victims but were unsuccessful.

LCSO Marine Units, Mineral Vol Fire, Lake Anna Vol Rescue, Department of Wildlife Resources, and Spotsylvania County Fire and EMS Dive Team divers helped to recover the bodies of the father and son, who were pronounced dead on the scene. 

Both are being transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination.

The victims in this tragedy were from out of state, and their names are being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
