The 10-mile stretch of the new express lanes along Interstate 95 in Stafford will open to the public on Friday, Aug. 18. The lanes are the first phase of a two-phase project.

The lanes start just past Route 610 in Stafford County, and extend to near Route 17, bringing a faster travel option to motorists.

The second phase includes new on and off ramps in busy areas, adding more local access along the highway for nearly 50 miles from near Fredericksburg to Washington DC.

Phase 2 is expected to debut in the winter.
