South Carolina and LSU set for key SEC showdown on Thursday night


No. 1 South Carolina will face its toughest conference test of the season when it travels to face ninth-ranked LSU on Thursday night.

The Gamecocks have been running through the SEC so far, winning their five games by an average of nearly 35 points. They are the only undefeated team left in college basketball and have been dominant.

Not bad for a team that lost all five starters from last season’s squad that made it to the Final Four. Coach Dawn Staley has done a masterful job of getting the Gamecocks to play extremely well so far as they’ve beaten four ranked opponents already.

While the Gamecocks have been playing extremely well, the Tigers have been trying to mesh their new pieces with returning stars Angel Reese and Flau’jae Johnson. LSU lost at Auburn on Jan. 14 and sits a half-game behind the Gamecocks in the standings.

“As I told the team, ‘Our goals have not been destroyed just because you lost to Auburn,’” LSU coach Kim Mulkey said. “This is just a little obstacle in the road. And it’s one, as I said after the South Carolina game last year, ‘You either learn from this or you don’t.’ And I tend to think we learned last year, and we’ll learn this year.”

The defending champions lost their season opener to Colorado before rebounding to win 16 straight — albeit not against the strongest competition.

This will be the only regular season meeting between the two teams.

RENEWING OLD ACQUAINTANCES

There was a time when UConn and Notre Dame played it was must-see TV. The two women’s basketball powers had a series of intense rivalry games when they were both in the Big East Conference as well as classic Final Four matchups. They’ll tip-off on Saturday in Connecticut with the two schools splitting the past six meetings.

The Huskies will honor the 2003, 2004, 2013 and 2014 national championship teams. The 2013 and ’14 teams will officially be inducted into the Huskies of Honor at halftime, joining the 1995, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004 championship teams.

Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer became the all-time winningest coach in major college basketball, moving past former Duke men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski on Sunday when the Cardinal beat Oregon State. Next up for the Cardinal is a trip to Arizona to face the Wildcats and Arizona State.

How Will South Carolina Rebound After Landon Duckworth Decommitment


Unfortunate news came across the World Wide Web Tuesday night when ’26 quarterback Landon Duckworth decided to re-enter the recruiting scene.

In his tweet, which received 74k impressions and counting, Duckworth released a statement regarding the breaking news:

“Nothing but love for Dowell Loggains, Coach Beamer, Riley Watkins, the Gamecocks staff, and Gamecock Nation for believing in me!” This definitely hurts if you’re a Gamecock faithful; however, fans, this is just the new nature of the beast in recruiting. The days of seeing underclassmen stick with one team are few and far between. Welcome the days where most want to enjoy the recruitment process for at least three years before a concrete decision is made. For all we know, the Jackson, Alabama native may end up finding his way back to Columbia for a couple of OVs before signing his letter of intent. One thing’s for certain: Coach Beamer and the Gamecock coaching staff take building relationships seriously. They’re always on the go, visiting with priority and local recruits.

However, what’s the next move?

As the 2027 recruiting class begins to take shape, the Gamecocks have extended offers to three elite ’27 quarterbacks: dual-threat William Jackson, Champ Smith, and Trent Seaborn.

In the constantly ever-changing world of recruitment, William Jackson, an Orlando, Florida native, may be the most complete prospect of the quarterbacks as well as the tallest of the trio at 6-foot-4. He’s a dual-threat quarterback who has a skill for putting touch on the football. The right-hander plays with tremendous balance in the pocket, allowing him to move nimbly and drive the ball downfield. According to Prep Redzone, the unranked quarterback is said to be the real deal.

It’s been an active off-season for the central Florida native. In between workouts and spring and summer football obligations, he’s been present at this year’s UA Camp and Elite Camps. Jackson was offered by South Carolina on the 11th of June. He currently holds 21 offers.

Champ Smith, a Florida native, is another young quarterback getting reps early. He saw varsity reps in his eighth grade year, completing 59 percent of his passes for 1,273 yards with 18 TDs and 2 INTs. As a freshman (2024), he led Jupiter Christian to a 6-3 record in Florida’s independent Sunshine State division, throwing for 1,972 yards with 20 TDs and 7 INTs. Making the decision to up and move, Smith will be relocating to the 305 district, preparing to wear blue and red for Christopher Columbus. Brian Griese is the only alumni in Columbus high school history to earn an NFL roster spot. Standing at 6-foot-1, Smith has been ranked as the 11th best pro-style quarterback in ’27, per QB Hitlist; therefore, it’s no surprise to see he has multiple Power 5 offers, including South Carolina, who pulled the trigger on the first of June.

Trent Seaborn may be the most intriguing quarterback prospect of the three. It was reported in The State that Seaborn is a Hawaii native and moved to Alabaster, AL at the Tagovailoa’s recommendation. Last year with Thompson, Seaborn led the Trojans to the 7A championship where they lost to the Central Phoenix; however, he still won the 7A championship player of the game and Maxpreps National Player of The Year Award. As a freshman, he passed for 2,601 yards, 27 TDs, and 6 INTs. Seaborn was the first to receive a South Carolina offer (May 22).

Ultimately, we won’t know the magnitude of Duckworth’s recent decommit until likely signing day. As we saw last year with Jalewis Solomon, if Coach Beamer and co. truly believe in a prospect and the relationship is there (which it definitely is), it’s very possible to un-flip the player.

Businesses were selected using Yelp’s ranking system, which calculates an adjusted rating value that takes into account the number of ratings as well as the rating score itself. Only restaurants with at least 10 reviews were considered. In an effort to highlight independent restaurants and local chains, those with more than five locations nationally, based on the Yelp data, were not included. Data is as of June 14, 2024.

Mass timber is still a small segment of the construction industry in the United States. A recent congressional report counts 1,753 mass-timber buildings in the country as of March of last year. “For context,” the report says, “5.9 million commercial buildings were constructed in 2019 alone.” But the market is growing. According to one estimate, mass-timber construction in the U.S. has doubled every two years for the past five years. Timberlab, a provider of mass-timber engineering, fabrication, and installation services, is betting that this trajectory will continue.

Earlier this month, the company announced that a glulam fabrication plant it opened just over a year ago in Greenville, South Carolina, was now operating at full capacity, with the ability to support one million square feet of mass-timber construction annually, making it the largest such facility east of the Mississippi, and only one of three similar plants in the Southeast. Timberlab says that the facility has doubled the fabrication capacity of large glulam components for mass-timber structures nationally.

First started as a timber-focused division of San Francisco-headquartered general contractor Swinerton in 2016, and then known as Swinerton Mass Timber, Timberlab opened its first fabrication plant in Portland, Oregon, in 2020, followed by its formal launch as a wholly owned subsidiary in 2021. In addition to the Portland and Greenville plants, Timberlab recently acquired two glulam manufacturing facilities from American Laminators in Oregon. It has also announced plans to open a cross-laminated timber (CLT) manufacturing operation in that state’s mid-Willamette region. LEVER Architecture, a Portland-based firm known for its work in mass timber, is designing the new CLT facility, which is expected to open by 2027.

Timberlab chose Greenville due to the region’s abundance of southern yellow pine, its existing network of glulam manufacturers, and its proximity to high-growth East Coast construction markets. At the South Carolina plant, Timberlab uses CNC machines to mill non-fabricated glulam billets, transforming them into custom, project-specific components that are then assembled on the building site. Timberlab can source the glulam from nearby producers or from its recently acquired plants in Oregon. “It is easy to send non-fabricated glulam across country by rail,” explains Chris Evans, Timberlab president. “But Greenville is not exclusive to glulam manufactured at our facilities,” he adds. “We will do the best procurement for our clients.”

Among the first projects supported by the Greenville plant is an 67,000-square-foot office building for the LS3P-designed Live Oak Bank in Wilmington, North Carolina, and a 42,00-square-foot career and student center at the University of Southern Maine designed by Elkus Manfredi. Projects with mass-timber components milled at Timberlab’s Pacific Northwest fabrication plant include Atelier Jones’ Heartwood, an eight-story, 216-unit apartment building in Seattle that features unusual all-wood mortise-and-tenon joints.

If Timberlab’s expansion sounds rapid, Evans maintains that the company’s evolution has been measured and methodical, spanning eight years. Its investment in the supply chain, funded by shareholders (both Timberlab and Swinerton are employee-owned), will ultimately make mass-timber buildings more affordable, he says, while helping spur greater demand. “It is a chicken-and-egg situation,” he says. “You need to have the investment to support the market’s growth.”
