River suddenly turns bright green, residents demand tests amid toxic pollution: report

Residents of a small Russian city were startled after a small river suddenly turned bright green recently, according to local reports.

Locals are calling for tests amid toxic pollution fears in the waterway in Penza, located 400 miles southeast of Moscow.

“A poisonous green creek on Gagarin Street worries residents of Penza,” the Mash media outlet reported. “The local administration is already studying the liquid.”

IS THIS TECHNOLOGY THE ANSWER TO CLEANING UP OUR OCEAN’S PLASTIC PROBLEM?

Footage shows bright-green water flowing amid a snow-covered landscape.

The river was hit by a sewage overflow in 2020, but the water never turned green, the news outlet said.

The All-Russia People’s Front, a political coalition started in 2011 by then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, has been looking for violators of environmental regulations, the report said.

The likely cause was an “accident,” Mash reported. The Moskovsky Komsomolets media outlet reported that the cause of the sudden coloration was due to “industrial dumping.”

Penza is home to 17 manufacturing plants, including some that make items for the nuclear power industry, radio and communications equipment, and automated management systems.

“The reason for such metamorphoses is not some amazing spring phenomenon in which water takes on different colors, but industrial waste dumped into the city’s reservoirs,” a local report said.

No further details on the green waste were disclosed.

Mailbag: Could Valdes-Scantling battle for WR3?

Mailbag: Could Valdes-Scantling battle for WR3?

Kurt: Signed just two days after the draft, the Valdes-Scantling deal did slide in a bit under the radar, but this seems a wise move to add a veteran to the wide receiver room and perhaps even build in a little security in the event the George Pickens situation goes haywire.

Now entering his ninth season, the 6-foot-4, 206-pound Valdes-Scantling certainly brings size and experience. And you’re right, he’s topped 30 catches and 500 receiving yards three times in his career, which includes finishing third on the Chiefs with 687 yards during their 2022 championship season. He also had a touchdown grab in Kansas City’s 2023 Super Bowl victory.

Of course, the last two years have been more nomadic for Valdes-Scantling as he split 2024 between Buffalo and New Orleans and then spent time with both San Francisco and Pittsburgh in 2025. Last season in particular wasn’t exactly pretty, as he battled a calf injury on his way to just 120 receiving yards combined off 14 catches.

Meanwhile, Ryan Flournoy, who is five years younger, enjoyed a breakout effort in his sophomore campaign for the Cowboys, finishing with 40 catches for 475 yards and four touchdowns a season ago. At this point, the team clearly sees him as the first option for that third wideout spot.

So Valdes-Scantling will be in a battle for playing time (and perhaps even a roster spot), but taking a flier on a two-time Lombardi Trophy winner with a contract for less than $1.5 million, and only $187,500 of that guaranteed, made perfect sense. It’s a small investment that could potentially pay big dividends.

Men arrested for defacing Miami Beach pride bench with antisemitic graffiti, cops say

Two men from Germany were arrested after police said they were caught on surveillance video defacing a bench with antisemitic graffiti in Miami Beach.

Authorities said it happened Monday at around 5:34 p.m., when Miami Beach police officers responded to the area of 12th Street and Ocean Drive.

Police said officers found writing including a swastika and the words “Adolf Was Here” on an LGBTQIA+ bench located within Lummus Park.

Using surveillance video from city cameras, police were able to track down the two men involved.

Two men from Germany were arrested after police said they were caught on surveillance video defacing a bench with antisemitic graffiti in Miami Beach.

According to arrest reports, the footage shows how 58-year-old Christoph Rehak asked one of his friends for a marker, then he and 63-year-old Gunther Jekschtat sat on the bench next to each other.

“Mr. Rehak began to write on the bench while Mr. Jekschtat blocked him with his body so he could not be seen,” an arrest report states.

All of the men then left the area before they were tracked down to the Colony Hotel. Police saw them leaving and “quickly detained them.”

The group was taken to the Miami Beach Police Station to be interviewed, where Rehak allegedly confessed and said he wrote on the bench “as a joke.” He also allowed police to view his phone, where photos of the graffiti were found, police said.

Jekschtat, meanwhile, allegedly confessed to being aware that Rehak had written the antisemitic graffiti and purposely blocked him “to defend his friend,” according to an arrest report.

“He also apologized for lying” and “explained to the officers that he did not known why Mr. Rehak wrote that specific remark he believed he did it as a joke,” the report states.

In Florida, crimes are subject to increased penalties if there’s evidence of certain prejudice. These are known as hate crimes.

“Upon being further interviewed, Mr. Rehak did not show intent of the remark as being a hate crime,” an arrest report states. Further details were not immediately available.

Rehak and Jekschtat were arrested and charged with criminal mischief of more than $200 and less than $1,000.

A new report says Atlanta is faring better than most other host cities. About half the city’s hotels in the survey say booking pace is in line with or ahead of expectations.

About 213,000 hotels in downtown, like the Moxy Atlanta Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead are booked for during the approximately 30 days of matches during this summer’s World Cup, according to the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau. (Arvin Temkar/AJC)

Hotel bookings for the World Cup this summer are looking soft among host cities, but a new report suggests Atlanta is outperforming most of its U.S. peers.

The American Hotel & Lodging Association surveyed hoteliers across the 11 U.S. markets that will host World Cup matches. In its report, the AHLA broadly said the “anticipated economic lift may fall short of expectations,” with 80% of survey respondents saying that hotel bookings are tracking below initial forecasts.
