All eyes on Mississippi's Rep. Guest as his committee considers releasing Gaetz report

President-elect Donald Trump’s announcement to nominate former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz as attorney general has, again, thrust Mississippi Congressman Michael Guest, chairman of the House Ethics Committee, into the national spotlight.

Guest’s committee will potentially vote at its Wednesday meeting whether to release an ethics report on Gaetz. The committee, which was investigating Florida’s Gaetz over allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, was set to release the report before Gaetz abruptly resigned from Congress.

Guest is a Republican who represents Mississippi’s 3rd Congressional District and has chaired the bipartisan House committee that investigates whether House members have committed ethics violations since January 2023.

Gaetz resigned last week shortly after Trump announced he planned to nominate him to lead the Department of Justice, despite having been previously investigated by the department for alleged sex trafficking crimes. The department declined to pursue criminal charges against Gaetz.

After the resignation, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that he does not want the House to make the committee’s report public because Gaetz is no longer in office.

Guest declined to comment to Mississippi Today about recent developments with the committee’s investigation into Gaetz. But the Mississippi Republican told Politico that the panel will make its own decision about releasing the report, regardless of Johnson’s opinion that it should be kept under wraps. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for the report to be provided to senators before a confirmation vote on Gaetz and-or to the public.

Guest is the former district attorney of Rankin and Madison counties. He also gained national attention when he introduced a resolution last year to expel New York Congressman George Santos from the House.

Some U.S. senators such as Republican John Cornyn of Texas have publicly called for the Ethics Committee to hand over its report of the Gaetz investigation. Neither of Mississippi’s two U.S. senators, Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith, sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee, but they will get to vote on the nomination if it reaches the full Senate.

Wicker, a Republican from Tupelo, told Mississippi Today that the Senate has the constitutional obligation to “provide the president with advice and consent on executive and judicial branch nominations” and he takes that responsibility seriously. He did not comment on Gaetz.

“I think that we are in a position to give President-elect Trump good advice on what is likely to work,” Wicker said. We are going to fulfill our constitutional role, and we are going to do so as friends of the president-elect and as members of a team who want him to be as successful as possible.”

Hyde-Smith, a Republican from Brookhaven, did not respond to a request for comment.

Ole Miss Women’s Basketball Takes Care of Mississippi Valley State in Oxford

No. 25 Ole Miss Rebels women’s basketball won its third straight game on Saturday as it took down an in-state foe in the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes by a final score of 78-44.

Ole Miss (8-3) was led in scoring by guard Sira Thienou with 18 points, and she was one of five players who hit double digits on Saturday. Madison Scott (13), Star Jacobs (13), Kennedy Todd-Williams (12) and Kharyssa Richardson (12) were the others to hit that pinnacle.

As a team, the Rebels shot 43.9 percent from the field and 25 percent from three compared to percentages of 34 and 28.6 from MVSU. Ole Miss head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin spoke with the media after the game about the difficulties of preparing a team for some of these non-conference games around the Christmas season.

“These games are very hard because it’s not like one of those games where it’s a conference game or something where the players are very educated on their opponent,” McPhee-McCuin said. “You just ask them to be mature and work things through. I thought in the third and fourth quarter, we were able to establish that and pull away by me shortening the bench a little bit.”

Ole Miss only led by 12 points at halftime, and since expectations have changed around the program, impressive wins matter. The Rebels then proceeded to outscore MVSU 42-20 to secure a convincing result, and McPhee-McCuin was impressed with some of her veteran leadership in the locker room at halftime.

“I thought that Maddie (Scott) and Kennedy (Todd-Williams) leadership today was incredible in the locker room,” McPhee-McCuin said. “I didn’t have to say a word. They did a lot of the talking. Because the NET still matters and how it looks still matters for us.

“We’re no longer trying to get into the tournament. If we’re not in the tournament, I’ll be shocked. For us, it’s not about getting into the tournament. It’s about seeding. We have to fight that because we’re not the ‘sexy’ team. Everything we get, we’re going to have to earn. They knew that, and they were talking to the team about that, and that’s why we were able to create some separation.”

The Rebels are off until they play host to Alcorn State on Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. CT at the SJB Pavilion.

The Bulldogs (10-1) are playing Memphis (9-2) and coach Penny Hardaway at FedExForum on Saturday (11:30 a.m., CBS). Both teams are ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs are at No. 25 and the Tigers are ranked No. 22.

This is one of those games that three months from now will be talked about in a room full of people trying to create seeds for a big tournament.

Both Memphis and Mississippi State will soon dive deep into their respective conference schedules, they each have some nice things on the resumés, and at the moment, they’re fringe top 25ish teams. Memphis is 21st in the latest AP Poll, Mississippi State is just on the outside looking in.

The Bulldogs are on a run of three straight games away from home, the Tigers have lost two of their last five, and both are looking for a little consistency.

The Tigers have two mega issues. They turn the ball over way too much, and they can’t guard anyone from three. Mississippi State doesn’t turn the ball over – it’s fourth in the nation in fewest giveaways – and it’s okay from three. Mississippi State is even worse at guarding the three.

Butler went off on the SEC Bulldogs from the outside in MSU’s lone loss. Prairie View kept it WAY too close by hitting ten threes a few weeks ago, and McNeese State was on last week in a 66-63 MSU win.

Mississippi State has to make this a bit of a track meet. The Bulldogs are deep, and the Tigers aren’t.

And yeah, Memphis will make plenty of shots from the outside, turnovers will matter in this. As long as the Bulldogs can offset the ten threes the Tigers will hit with transition points, this should be close.

Memphis is just a wee bit better on the free throw line, and it’s way better from the outside.
