Kentucky transfer target Richie Saunders will return to BYU

Before a huge recruiting weekend officially begins on Friday for Kentucky men’s basketball head coach Mark Pope and his newly hired staff, the Wildcats had a familiar visitor on campus. After playing under Pope at BYU, Richie Saunders visited Lexington.

That visit ended without a commitment after Pope personally welcomed the transfer to town at the Lexington airport. Richie Saunders announced on Thursday night that the junior has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal and will return to BYU in 2024-25.

The 6-foot-5 wing averaged 9.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 52.3 percent from the field and 36.4% from three as a sophomore at BYU. After a mission trip following high school, Saunders will be the age of a fifth-year player next season but still has two seasons of eligibility remaining. As time goes on, it looks like Collin Chandler could be the only BYU player who follows Pope to Lexington.

Aly Khalifa was considered a Kentucky lean at one point but ultimately committed to Louisville and announced that he will take a redshirt next season as he recovers from injury. Starting point guard Dallin Hall quickly entered the transfer portal and Kentucky is currently not pursuing. Jaxson Robinson entered the NBA Draft and has not entered the transfer portal yet. The Wildcats worked swiftly to get Saunders on campus, but the bench player in the Big 12 last season is returning to Provo for another year.

Oklahoma wing Otega Oweh and Wake Forest big Andrew Carr are each visiting Kentucky this weekend. Stanford wing Andrej Stojakovic is finalizing his visit plans with Kentucky. Some other win options are emerging for the Cats after Saunders decided to stay at BYU.

Jim Caldwell's Forecast | Severe storms set to sweep into Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)—Some pretty decent storms will develop today, but our best chance doesn’t get going until Tuesday.

Scattered thunderstorms move through the region today. I don’t think we see many significant storms, just some general ones. Any of these might bring heavy rain and gusty winds. I wouldn’t be shocked if one or two of these popped to severe levels. It just isn’t a widespread concern of mine for your Monday.

Thunderstorms will roll together on Tuesday. This round brings high winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes to the commonwealth. The chances of severe weather will climb in the afternoon and evening hours. There will be some other rounds, but the best severe chance happens at that time.

On Wednesday, these chances are all a little higher. A very intense cluster of storms will develop during the afternoon hours. Some of that might kick off some early severe weather concerns. I think the best chance will come together later in the day. Those storms have a better chance of producing all severe elements. Damaging winds in excess of 70 MPH, very large hail, and a few tornadoes are all in the cards.

Today is the day to prepare for what could be a very tough period in weather.

Kentucky Derby's thrilling finish draws 16.7 million viewers. It's the biggest audience since 1989

STAMFORD, Conn. — Mystik Dan’s nose victory in the 150th Kentucky Derby drew 16.7 million viewers, the biggest audience for the race since 1989.

Viewership peaked at 20.1 million from 7 to 7:15 p.m. EDT on Saturday, when 18-1 shot Mystik Dan, Sierra Leone and Forever Young hit the wire together in the Derby’s first three-horse photo finish since 1947. That marked the biggest peak audience ever for the Derby on NBC.

The 16.7 million viewers was up 13% from last year’s 14.8 million.

NBC Sports said Sunday it was the biggest Derby audience since 18.5 million watched Sunday Silence win in 1989, when the race was shown on ABC.

NBC Sports and Churchill Downs Inc. have agreed to a multiyear contract extension that will keep the Derby on the network through 2032.

Of course … Travis isn’t just a fan today — he’s actively supporting the team he’s got an ownership interest in, Alpine Racing. Kelce and his teammate Patrick Mahomes bought into the team back in October.

It marks the end of a busy weekend for Killa Trav who seems to be on a tour of star-studded sporting events.

Like we said … Travis partied hard at the KD in Louisville yesterday and even hung out backstage at a Chainsmokers show late Friday night — so, we know the guy’s been throwing down with the best of ’em.

It seems he’s without his better half, Taylor Swift this weekend … who kicks off more international “Eras” tour shows later this week and is presumably in or on her way to Paris — though we don’t know for sure if that’s the case.

Anyhoo … looks like Travis is enjoying his action-packed weekend — even if he’s riding solo on this adventure.
