Free Christmas tree recycling event Jan. 6 will help the Delaware Center for Horticulture
Many people prefer a real Christmas tree for the look and scent and the family tradition, but after the holidays, where do you dispose of it?
One free option that will help the environment and the Delaware Center for Horticulture is “TreeCycle” Saturday, Jan. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the center’s parking lot, 1810 N. Dupont Street, Wilmington. The rain date is Sunday, Jan. 7.
The center is teaming up with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control to encourage residents to recycle their trees.
The Davey Tree Expert Company will use its chipper/grinder to produce wood chips that will be used in Delaware Center for Horticulture gardens, the Shearman Street community garden and other public landscaping projects throughout Wilmington. Republic Services is also supporting this program.
Remember to remove all decorations and the stand before bringing the tree.
The service is free but donations will be accepted to benefit the Center for Horticulture’s community forestry efforts.
More options to recycle your tree
If you can’t attend “TreeCycle” or chip up your tree for mulch, there are a variety of ways to dispose of it.
Many towns and cities offer Christmas tree pickup for residents. Call your municipality or check its website for information.
For residents outside town limits, check with your trash hauler to see if Christmas trees can be picked up after the holidays.
Some landscaping businesses will accept real Christmas trees to turn into mulch, sometimes for free but sometimes for a fee.
Delaware Solid Waste Authority sites in each county accept real Christmas trees for a fee.
For the Solid Waste Authority sites and some of the businesses that accept trees, see the list on the DNREC website at https://dnrec.delaware.gov/waste-hazardous/yard-waste/drop-off-sites/

No trees accepted at landfills
Prior to Delaware’s yard waste ban, many recyclable and reusable resources such as grass, leaves, brush and Christmas trees were often sent to landfills instead of being used for mulch and compost.
More than 176,000 tons of yard waste were recycled in 2021, according to the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

Winter Weather Advisory issued for part of Delaware. Here’s how much snow to expect
How to safely shovel snow
The Mayo Clinic has some tips for safely shoveling snow.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for New Castle County.
The advisory began at 7 a.m. Sunday and will last until 1 a.m. Monday.
How much snow will Delaware receive?
New Castle County: Will have mixed precipitation early, but as temperatures drop the area is expected to receive 3 to 5 inches of snow. Snowfall rates of an inch per hour should develop at times this afternoon.

Sussex County: Sussex County is expected to start with rain and receive less than an inch of snow.
Most Delaware areas have already reached their high temperature for today. At 9 a.m., Wilmington was at 38 degrees.
After the snow moves off, a blast of frigid temperatures will move into the area. Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing tonight and remain there for several days. As a result, icy and slippery conditions may persist even after precipitation has ended.
How cold will it get in Delaware?
Delaware will face frigid temperatures early next week with sub-zero windchills.

What is wind chill?
According to the National Weather Service, wind chill is a term used to describe what the air temperature feels like to the human skin due to the combination of cold temperatures and winds blowing on exposed skin. In simple terms, the colder the air temperature and the higher the wind speeds the colder it will feel on your skin if you’re outside. So even if it remains the same temperature, but the wind speed increases it will feel colder to your skin.

Northern Delaware could have a few inches of snow from incoming storm
How to keep your pet safe during the cold winter
Winter can be a dangerous time for pets if their owners are not properly prepared to protect them from the cold.
unbranded – Lifestyle
A significant winter storm will charge up the East Coast on Sunday, but most of Delaware will avoid its snowiest impacts.
According to the National Weather Service, northern Delaware, especially north of I-95, could have a few inches of snow on Sunday. South of the interstate, snow accumulations will drop off sharply. Kent and Sussex counties will have more of a rain event and less than an inch of snow. A winter weather advisory has been issued for New Castle County from 7 a.m. on Sunday to 1 a.m. on Monday, with 2-4 inches of snow expected.
The closer you are to the Pennsylvania border, the more snow you could receive.
Precipitation chances start Sunday morning, with a mix of rain and snow initially expected. As the day continues, snow will take over for northern Delaware. Chances of precipitation across Delaware linger into late Sunday night.
Snow and rain could mix together in New Castle County as the line between rain and snow dances along the Delaware River. There is some uncertainty about where that line will track.
National Weather Service meteorologist Amanda Lee said dangerous cold will set in following the storm, with low temperatures early next week in the single digits with subzero wind chills. The last time this kind of cold was measured in Georgetown was last week, but before that, it was in January 2022.
“The primary concern is definitely going to be the dangerous cold beginning Sunday night; the coldest night looks like it’s going to be Monday night, where lows are going to be in the single digits, pretty much through the whole state,” Lee said.
