A woman and her dog were killed in a house fire in Far East Dallas on Tuesday morning, authorities say.

About 6 a.m., Dallas Fire-Rescue crews were dispatched to a one-story home in the 2500 block of Jonesboro Avenue, near Ashdown Drive, where they found heavy flames coming from a front window.

According to Jason Evans, a department spokesman, officials think the fire originated in the home’s front living area, but the “flames were so intense” that they also burned into the attic and through the roof in multiple places.

Neighbors said they tried knocking on the door before fire crews arrived, but no one answered, Evans said.

After firefighters went inside and extinguished the fire, Evans said, they found the bodies of a woman and her dog. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire was listed as undetermined pending a ruling from the Dallas County medical examiner’s office on the woman’s cause of death.
